I must say, that picture looks a lot more like it was from Crysis than Mass Effect to me.
The sniper rifle doesn't look like a Mass Effect sniper rifle, nor does the armour the guy is wearing look like anything out of Mass Effect.
That's a completely different art style too.

Nor is that Bioware's Default Shepard, which they use for all of the promotional material and trailers.
Against all tyrants.IGN has an article about it, comparing it to the Incisor sniper rifle.
That ain't Shepard. It's either a grunt or a new recruit. Or maybe it's from a joint Bioware-EA FPS game, release date 2011, set during the First Contact War/Geth War?
Edit: Actually, after watching this, I'm putting my money on it being set in the Mass Effect verse, but not directly relating to the story of Shepard and the Reapers.

It's not over. Not yet.^ Dunno. The fact the trailer explicitly states "the creators of Mass Effect and Dragon Age" makes it sound like another, completely unrelated franchise.
I do think it's Mass Effect related, but a spinoff rather than ME 3.
The existence of hexagons(is this trope listed yet?) on armor and that guy's gun suggest that this game is in the ME universe and takes place sometime in our planet's future. But the wire-mesh fence and the outside view suggest that they're on earth and possibly that it's not as far in the future as the other ME games.
Oh and there's this: http://www.vg247.com/2010/09/20/rumour-bioware-montreal-hiring-for-military-genre-fps-and-more/
Umbran Climax◊Probably a new series or spin-off in the same verse, it's too gray to be ME 3
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I'm wondering if Mass Effect 3 WILL debut in the Spike VG Awards, but it isn't THAT video.
Jonah FalconThe more I think about it, the more I think it'll be set during the First Contact War. The Codex uses a picture of humans wearing identical armour to what they currently use as the page image, after all. Maybe it'll be like Star Wars Battlefront II, where the single player was nothing more than the multiplayer maps loosely connected by an overarching storyline.
It's not over. Not yet.The guy also looks a bit too “white” for Mass Effect. Bioware seems committed to the “everyone will be mixed race in the future” trope for Mass Effect.
"If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you; but if you really make them think, they’ll hate you." —Don MarquisEh, they are gradually walking away from that since ME 2 (take Jacob for example). While a decent metaphor for the unification of humanity under the SA, 150 years is not nearly enough time for this kind of racial mix to occur on such a broad scale as advertised in ME 1.
It looks like a prototype Mass Effect sniper rifle. Closest comparison I can think of is Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.
Either way, a Mass Effect FPS could be awesome.
I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass.Yep. The closest NPC I can think of that even approaches that trope is Ash, but that can easily be explained by having a white (Williams) father, and a Hispanic mother. I'm fairly sure that trope has been mostly disproven, anyway.
It's not over. Not yet.Kaiden was supposed to be part White part Asian, most people just see him as white for some reason, and Jacob given his name is more than likely African American, who most have white ancestry. In one of the novels the classic “blonds are going extinct” line is even used. Given all that I do hope they move away from the trope given that its not very realistic. People aren’t paint colors you don’t always get something in the middle when you mix, genes don’t work that way!
"If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you; but if you really make them think, they’ll hate you." —Don Marquissort of like gears of war but the necks aren't the size of cows so that can't be it.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote? What I really wonder if they do make a Mass Effect FPS... will it have tech, combat and biotic powers?

The novels are of questionable canonicity, anyway — Udina is the Councilor in Retribution. I wouldn't be surprised if they outright Retcon it. It's not mentioned in the game.
It's not over. Not yet. It's a new ME game, or at least spin off. If it were set during the First Contact War, that junky armor and clean cut soldier makes sense. Bioware's usually pretty crazy on detail in their games and they don't strike me as blatantly recycling designs between two different franchises.
If there truely will be an FPS spinoff for the Mass Effect universe, we can at least expect the fanbase to go from a Broken Base to a shattered base.
Personally, i can see Bio Ware releasing a First Contact War or Shepard prequel FPS, and then going to a more ME 1 style for ME 3.thus giving each base a game to fanboy.
When in Doubt: Fireball the chamber and let the Gods decideI was told that there wasn't going to be a big shift in the engine/graphics technology from 2 to 3 so that's why I think it's a spin off game.
I'm not really a huge FPS guy, but an FPS set in the ME universe could potentially be very cool if it's sufficiently tactical. I hate "realistic" shooters with a passion, but ones with fantastical elements can be loads of fun.
Doesn't have to be. Remember the difference between the Mass Effect 2 CGI trailer and the final game?
(Truthfully, all I really remember is Miranda's ass being half the size it is in-game.)
It's not over. Not yet.
There's some speculation and wishlists for Mass Effect 3, but some news/rumors are out.
SCEE Russia may have leaked that that image of the game that'll be shown at the Spike VG Awards is indeed Mass Effect 3.
