Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

I'm pretty sure there is, when you're selecting an enemy to attack or something. Might need Scan for it, though.

Oh yeah, if you didn't cast Scan or none of your weapons had Sensor, that could pose problems. But I believe Tidus' Brotherhood Sword has it. And it's your best weapon for a good first half of the game!

Yeah, you need to either cast Scan on him, or have someone equipped with a Sensor weapon. Which for me is a non-issue, because Tidus's Brotherhood gets Sensor at the Farplane, and I also generally have Kimahri get the Sensor/Piercing/Str +10% weapon he gets... I think from a chest or npc somewhere in Mi'ihen.

The Help bar really is a boon in X.

I ripped X and XII (patched to IZJS) to IS Os ages ago to make them run better in PCSX 2 but I've only just noticed a big oddity about them. The X ISO is 14% bigger than XII: IZJS. This makes arguments about having to compress audio in XII sound very weird.

@Caissas: The problem with the Geomancy/Fusiliercombo is that it only gives a 50% bonus to an already feeble attack. The Attack command is generally fairly underpowered in FFTA2 (the main reason why the Dragoon falls behind past mid-game), and the Fusilier, as a long-range class, has a hard time hitting sides and back. All in all, that combo doesn't do much except status effects (I feel a Resilience-lowering passive ability would've been a nice addition to the game).

Oh, and the Arcanist and Assassin have both been greatly useful in my run. The Arcanist's abilities are esoteric, but useful (Lv 5 Haste, fuck yeah), and Death has a surprisingly good hit rate (especially with a Tranq). As for the Assassin, forget about Last Breath and Nightmare and Rockseal. Blood Price Ultima Masher with a greatbow turns it into one of the most powerful classes in the game.

Oh, and Pummel does somewhat less than double damage, in contrast with Doubleshot. Bangaa always get the shaft, man.

I seem to remember Gria being able to consistently hit backs thanks to their innate flying capacity, and Seeq having a niche in the form of reversed items.

... It's been a while, so I can't recall the specifics. sad

I sure said that!

Watch the enemy heal them as you merrily murder many mooks!

Yeah, Gria get a pass because of the whole flying thing. And I hadn't considered Bulwark/Ribbon/Unscarred. I have them all on my Gria, but that was a coincidence.

I bet everyone who knows how Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors works in the series did it.

Made dealing with random battles trivial. And switching a character in, pressing triangle to have them defend and switch out still netted them AP.

Blood-price Ultima-Masher Assassin is indeed godly. Just a bit boring for me really when I'm using a Turbo-MP Sniper Spellblade with Maimblade. It's just a combo I prefer, with Double Shot (alternating with Maimblade), aside from being only slightly less damaging (Turbo MP gives more than a double damage boost for Spellblade abilities because it also adds the attack stat as a boost to the damage calculations) it's useful on high evasion foes, of which there are quite a lot in a game where less than 80% accuracy essentially means "never hits".

The Moogle mostly is for Stopshot and cleaning up the wounded really; I realise it's not the most damaging character in the party even when fully-levelled as a Moogle Knight (which has the highest Moogle attack growth, which does a LOT to overcome the crappy attack growth of the Fusilier), but it does have the best range, and Stop-Shot is the only ability in the game that damages and causes Stop. He's still easily clearing triple-digit damage against enemies near his own level, which is pretty reasonable for a moogle.

Not sure why you bring up the "attack" command though - I never use it. Geomancy is for Fire, Bolt and Ice shot abilities, doubling the damage of those. Everything else gets Stopshotted.

My strategy is basically a blitzkrieg - I storm from one side of the map to the other, with nothing ever really surviving the first pass. On bigger maps, the moogle normally gets the first shot, incapacitating the most dangerous enemy before he can do a thing. On smaller maps - very little can survive four consecutive Blood Priced Maduins in a row evil grin

Because the -shot abilities' damage equals the Attack command's. And Geomancy (or elemental weakness in general) is only a 50% boost, not double. (I'm not dissing you, by the way. It's just not how I'd play the game. Plus I don't care for Moogles in general).

I had to get a new memory card for my PS Vita so I could install Final Fantasy X-2 on it, and figured, what the heck? Started FF X again as well.

Just got the Jecht Shot down on the first opportunity. Now let's see if it can tip the balance in that incredibly rigged match.

Update: After several painful tries, I got it.

Although part of it was due to ridiculous bad AI, and good fortune, I got it.

Let's see, in the first half, I was able to dribble the ball across the entire southern half of the field (with the toughest guy on the team, I just kept engaging and tacking their tackles, rather than let them all gang up) and passed to Tidus at the last moment before getting a winning score. Bickson got the ball, but he messed up a shot that was just him and Keepa. Somehow.

Second Half, Tidus got the ball into the goal-keeper ring with two people engaging him, which is where the Jecht shot came really in handy. But things went wrong when they got the ball again, as they were able to get the ball back to Bickson, and this time, he scored. Then Wakka got onto the field, and they got the ball VERY close to in. Barely got away with it, but with the entire team all piled into my goal post, seemed like a tie was inevitable.

And then, instead of shooting, the guy passed the ball all the way down the field to someone waiting in front of their keeper. I was able to stall out that last minute and won the game.

I should try to beat some of the harder songs in Theaterhythm before the next one arrives. The Ultimate Score of Battle on the Big Bridge is just brutal. And don't even get me started on Ultimate Decisive Battle.

Also, I maybe should unlock more characters and level them up. Mostly been using Cecil, Terra, Firion, and Bartz/Shantotto.

Getting an A rank on Battle at the Big Bridge and Battle with the Four Fiends on Ultimate was such an accomplishment for me. I still only really feel comfortable doing those songs with my tank party (Aerith, Snow, Cosmos, and Princess Sarah).

The one song that inexplicably gave me the most trouble for passing with an A rank or higher was Theme of the Empire on Expert. I'd always miss the same damn slide note in the feature zone and miss out on the extended version. Until I just went "screw it" and used the item that always guarantees the extended version.

I am very excited for confirmation of the NA release of Curtain Call. I'm wondering if the repeated songs are going to use the same note patterns or if they're going to switch the patterns up.

someday we will foresee obstacles
