The new Netflix show that takes place on a cruise ship bound for America in 1899... but somethings off. There's some strange fuckery going on, and things get stranger from there. I've watched 5 and 1/2 episodes at this point. Really enjoying myself. Really gets into Mind Screw territory and things are definitely not as they seem. Might be the first true successor to Lost, in that it actually cares about the characters while teasing with the mystery.

Finally, I was looking for this forum. About this show, it's interesting to see characters communicate each other with different languages. And the reveals and mysterious is mind blown but confusing a bit.

I just finished watching this series last night. It was pretty good, I felt!

It had an interesting mystery, with some nice teases as to the nature of the plot, and engaging characters.

I will confess, it did not go where I expected it to go! Well, I gathered that the characters were in a simulation, but I didn't expect them to be connected to a computer in a sleeper ship!

Rather, from all the talk of the brain, I was expecting something rather more like The Evil Within. And indeed, I am then left with some confusion as to why they leant so heavily into said talk.

Well, perhaps there's still another mystery to be unfolded in another season—they did seem to be setting up for such.

wild mass guess Perhaps, indeed, they have only woken up into another layer of the simulation...wild mass guess

Just finished this last night.

I wnjoyed it, I ship Eyk x Maura, and I have no bloody idea what I just watched.

Really enjoyed the humanist themes of different folks banding together by circumstance (Sense8 i miss u...) and liked the multilingualism. I'm not European so had to do some thinking as to the precise language barriers between the characters, which was fun.

I think it was too plodding though; the middle was a lot of running around and "what is happening??" while I was sitting there going "we get it, they're in The Matrix!".

I like Eyk/Maura, too. Andreas Peitschmann has a very haunted way about him.

Yeah, I agree the pacing was a bit slow in the middle. I don't mind a slow pace like that, but I feel like they could have maybe given drip-fed us a bit more actual information in the middle section, just enough that it feels like we're starting to piece together what might be happening.

Also I might be just a dope but what killed the young girl, the first body they found?

Also I've started watching the all-English dub on Netflix, just to compare the two. I get that it would be helpful for people whose reading isn't too good, for blind people, etc, but them having to change entire lines of dialogue to cope with no longer having a language barrier is...weird.

This is one of those shows that I could make a comparison about, but it would either be meaningless, or it would spoil. Suffice it to say, there's a video game that came out back in 2019 that has a fair number of similarities in basic plot and themes.

A season 2 hasn't been confirmed yet, but I'll be very surprised (and disappointed) if it doesn't get one, given the viewership figures Netflix has released about it.

And… cancelled. Ah well.

As someone who ended s1 with “mildly intrigued but not raring for s2”, I’d at least like a one-liner plot explanation =)

NOOOOOOooo!!!

[up] The Matrix but on a spaceship? Or would you like one from the showrunners?

I assumed it was never intended for a season 2 given the ending.

I thought it was popular though? Dammit.

It had only been up for six weeks, give it time!

Judging how Neil Gaiman was posting about the Sandman renewal when that was still up in the air, I suspect the show wasn't popular enough to justify the expense.

Netflix is basically always throwing balls in the air in hopes enough get caught to justify another month of subscription.

My understanding is Netflix is entirely unable to rein in their spending, so shows need to be mega hits to justify continuing, hence why Sandman was even in contention...

It's unfortunate, as the creators of 1899 desired 3 seasons to finish everything.

I think, like Westworld, the showrunners vision was not the one I wanted to follow.

I wanted to have more 19th century shenanigans but if that's all fake, then I'm not really that interested.

I did like the "period funky magic", I will admit—but then I was also intrigued by the direction in which the show seemed to be going.

(A minor personal theory of mine is that the next season would have been called something like " 2099".)

Ah, I am disappointed that the series has been cancelled! It was a pretty good one, I did feel! :(
