    Original post
Now, I'll admit right away that the description of this thing is kind of hard to follow, but the gist is that these antics are done in order to control the court and win a case, even if it takes a lot of bullshitting and stalling to do it. However, the name is vague enough to me interpreted for any antics that involve the court.

50 wicks were checked here, and the results are as follows:

  • Correct: 7/50, or 14%
  • Misuse, General Antics: 13/50, or 26%
  • Misuse, Other: 3/50, or 6%
  • Unsure: 4/50, or 8%
  • ZCE: 23/50, or 46%

Now, obviously ZCEs are the biggest category here, but that's par for the course with a trope on the Time Immemorial Index. A lot of those examples boil down to "character engages in antics", which is too vague to have any meaning beyond "antics happen". For the ones I could get context out of, most of those were misuse, of the "antics happen" variety. Three of them were entirely irrelevant, either not taking place in the court or, in the case of one, not actually seeming like an antic at all. Then of course there were four I couldn't sort just due to the situation being vague enough to go either way.

What's to be done about this? There's not a ton of wicks, so a rename wouldn't be impossible, but I'm iffy on it. See, to my knowledge this is a real-life term, or at least one that sees some other search results beside TVT. If that's the case, we can't just rename the concept, and we can't just water the meaning down by broadening it while keeping the name in tact. Of course, if it's not a pre-existing term, then all bets are off, and either a rename or an expansion would be a solid plan of action here.

Whatever we do, the description could use some work. It, like a lot of ancient tropes, seems to prioritize style and comedy over actually describing the trope, which can't possibly help anyone to understand the definition. And if by some accident I've got the definition backwards, then the description still needs help to clarify that, and it would also mean the laconic is wrong.

I don't know how to write that one, tbh. Courtroom Antics was easier for me.

Double posting because I tried my hand at Sandbox.Unconventional Courtroom Tactics. I borrowed some text from Courtroom Antic's current description, but had to throw some of it out (for reasons that have already been stated), including the unclear and long-winded first paragraph, and I had to trim the subtrope list because some of them weren't particularly unorthodox.

I actually like both of those. To-the-point.

Good to know. I think it's easier for me to write descriptions if I have existing text to work with. In this case, I mainly had to replace the first paragraph and base the new one on the text I used for the rename crowner's header, since other parts of the description were salvageable (particularly because they were more coherent than the old opening paragraph).

I actually prefer to start from scratch, which in this case was sort of inevitable anyway.

To be fair, we didn't already have a trope for wacky court proceedings in general, so writing from scratch was pretty much the only option. The trope I wrote a description for is an attempt to salvage the trope currently named Courtroom Antic.

Also, I added the line "See also of Courtroom Antics, which applies to unconventional or silly court proceedings in general" to Sandbox.Unconventional Courtroom Tactics for the sake of cross-referencing (since Sandbox.Courtroom Antics already references Unconventional Courtroom Tactics).

In any case, we might be ready to start sorting examples between the sandboxes... I mean I guess we could publish the descriptions first but may as well keep them as sandboxes so we can tweak them as necessary.

Got up to Live-Action TV. Surprised at how many examples are going to Unconventional Courtroom Tactics over Courtroom Antics, but there's still a lot to go, and these are just the on page examples.

Anyone want to help me rewrite this so I can move it to the correct sandbox? I think it's Courtroom Antics but I refuse to keep it as-is.

Ace Attorney:

  • The point and appeal of the series is probably best summed up by this trope. The first game alone has the protagonist cross-examining a parrot (something the prosecutor suggested as a joke) and waving a metal detector around the courtroom, and by the final case of the Trials and Tribulations you're cross-examining a dead person channeled by your assistant.
  • There's a twist in that Phoenix himself (a defense attorney) maintains a level of professionalism, but many of the prosecutors do not. In the first game, Manfred von Karma practically intimidates the judge into letting him run the courtroom; in the second game, von Karma's younger daughter Franziska (also a prosecutor) tries to cow the judge, the witnesses, and the defense by smacking them with her whip, even going so far as to whip poor Phoenix unconscious after losing case 2 (See here for an excellent example of Franziska's whipping-ness); in the third game, prosecutor Godot throws his scalding hot coffee across the room in a fit of pique several times and talks in bizarre philosophical tangents, most of them about coffee; in the fourth game, prosecutor Klavier Gavin is a literal rock star who plays Air Guitars during trials (and is still the series' Only Sane Prosecutor); and in the fifth game, prosecutor Blackquill sends his pet hawk to attack you in the middle of a trial, not to mention showing off his sword-hand skills with that feather that was just two inches from Wright's face... despite the fact that he's a convicted murderer who no sane human being would ever allow that kind of freedom of arm movement if they knew he could do that. Sure, he was shackled to prevent that, but he continuously manages to break out of them and nobody does anything about it until much later. Ironically enough, Phoenix himself often gets berated by the judge for much less. It says something when the inquisitors from Labrynthia, one of whom wears armor and brings a sword to trails, and the other who constantly slashes the air with her clawed gauntlets, look sane by comparision
    • Even prosecutors from the past aren't immune to goofy quirks. Barok van Zieks will throw a chalice of wine at a lamp, or a throw a whole bottle into the gallery (and then apologize for it), or slam his leg on the table. Amusingly, he has many animations for performing dramatic antics with his wine, but none for actually drinking it.
  • The witnesses and defendants join in on the party, too. Either your witness is a professional clown who breaks into a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air parody due to nerves, or a ventriloquist who testifies with his dummy, or a ranting old lady who hits on the prosecution, or the aforementioned parrot, or an orca, or a Camp Gay French chef who refers to himself as a "little girl," or a radio with an assassin on the other end, or a pretentious academic who waxes philosophical about panty-snatching, or a teacher who takes attendance and throws chalk at the lawyers, or a man who wears cellphones on his shoulders and changes his hair color for every appearance, or an astronaut who sets off a parachute and flies up to the ceiling, or a mayor claiming to be possessed by a yokai who also has a double life as a masked wrestler, or a teenage reporter hiding in a cardboard box, or a grumpy veterinarian with a baby penguin living on his hair, or a pirate who disses the defense attorney through a rap song, or a heavy metal-playing hippie monk, or a drone which fires a gatling gun and missiles in court while being remote-controlled by a 12-year old who acts like a Drill Sergeant Nasty...the list goes on (and this is not even counting how every lawyer and almost every witness has a "shocked" animation where they react to contradictions as if they were struck by physical blows or gusts of wind), and in almost every case, the witnesses are pulling their stunts because they're hiding something. One of the series' running jokes is that Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth can't even get his witnesses to say their name and occupation clearly on the first try without their quirky antics interrupting him. And considering how many of them unashamedly lie through their teeth for reasons as silly as being excited over the prospect of being a murder witness, the courts must have perjury cases lined up for the next couple decades.

Other than that, I've finished moving over every viable on-page example to both drafts, save the RL ones, which I'm not sure we should keep.

As long as I sorted all the examples correctly we can probably make the swap. I can even archive the RL examples in a sandbox or something in case we want them.

I moved the sandboxes into place, with Sandbox.Courtroom Antic Real Life holding the real life examples for now.

Here are the wicks for Courtroom Antic, which all need to be moved since it's a redirect now, and here are the wicks for Courtroom Antics, which was previously a redirect, but has wicks of its own that might belong under Unconventional Courtroom Tactics.

Edit: Updated the to-do list. Now to add it to Wick Cleaning Projects.

Edit: Done.

Crown Description:

Consensus was to move Courtroom Antic's current definition (unorthodox or even silly methods used in an attempt to win a court case) to a new name and reuse the name Courtroom Antics for a supertrope. What name should be used for Courtroom Antic's current definition after the old name is used for a supertrope?
