So How Did You First Get Into TV Tropes?

I was searching up writing tips and I eventually wanted to learn what not to do. I found some pretty bad and annoying tropes through looking Quora questions about annoying tropes. Some of those tropes to me felt like they could be done better. So I searched up something like "how to write X right" and I eventually found a page for a trope. At first I just took walks there, but I eventually found the Trope Pantheon. I wanted to contribute to it so I made an account. I did try to contribute, but my only idea is gonna take some time before I can actually do it(Which is Gaster replacing Alphys for the Gone Horribly Wrong trope but I have to wait until Deltarune is done). I then explored other things, got sucked into forum games, and the rest is history.

Gaster probably wouldn't be a good replacement as the god of Gone Horribly Wrong, as most of what we know about him comes from fanon, while things that went wrong for Alphys are more clearly shown in canon.

Friend kept talking about this site. Didn't care because I thought he was talking about a site talking about a channel called TV Tropolous. Was looking for "My Immortal" the fanfic to read. Came across a result that involved tvtropes. Clicked on it. And my life was ruined in 2012.

I must have been 11 or 12 when I heard about StarKitsProphcy from the old Warrior Cats Official Forum (RIP) and decided I had to see what all the Bile Fascination was about. So I googled it, and this site's trope page for the "story" came up.

I heard about it around the start of The New '10s from my brother, which is weird because from what I can gather he doesn't use it nearly as often as me.

I was just interested in fanfiction so I decide to see any recommendations for it for the sake of reading. I just casually read fanfics instead tropes, but years later around (2021?) I saw my interested in it and see it like a piece of entertainment I love.

Back in 2016 (when I was 9) I searched something along the lines of "List of Magiswords in Mighty Magiswords" on Google and stumbled upon this wiki's page on the show.

I was either 12 or 13 (more likely the latter) and very interested in "disturbing video game music", as I followed every series of that title people made. One song that stuck out to me was "Insanity" from Shadow Man, because I had never heard a piece of music so gruesome. I wanted to know what the context behind it was, so I googled it and was lead to the game's Nightmare Fuel page. I still didn't get any answers (and to this day, the song is still not listed on the game's NF page. I wonder if it was even in the game looking back on it), but I was interested. This is what lead to the birth of my username "King of Nightmares", which is something of an Artifact Title username now that I focus on many other things besides NF pages.

Quite by accident. I was looking up art references to do a fanart of Cleo from Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats, and one of the search results was TV tropes.

I got bored during the pandemic and saw this in a list of websites to go on when bored

I have autism and part of my autism is hyperfixating on random shows or movies. Well this was 15 or so years ago and my hyperfixation was Space Goofs. I was on a message board discussing the show and there was a thread describing what tropes would be used for the show (this was before it had a TV Tropes page) and I got curious about the site...and the rest is history.

I think I found some links to this site back in summer 2020. I distinctly remember Monstrous Seal being one of the first tropes (if not the first trope) I ever saw.

As for why that specific trope, I remember looking for pictures of leopard seals (both photographs and illustrations) for drawing reference. The leopard seal from The Pebble and the Penguin was the page image, so... I figured that was what I was going for.

Then in December of that year I decided to stick around and I got an account on this site. The rest is history.
