As far as being irrelevant to the story goes, there is one example on the page where it actually is:
That is, the Narrator isn't personified until he's on the same level of textuality as the other characters, and being identified with a gender is one aspect of that. It's an interesting idea, though even if there were other examples like it it would still be a different trope from this one.
