4Kids Cleanup

The fact that it says "accidental" makes me think it's misuse.

Got rid of it. Mostly because it's really not possible for the dub of Samurai Pizza Cats to influence a bunch of other dubs.

Found this from The Adventures of Sam & Max: Freelance Police (Family Friendly Firearms): In a cross between a lampshade and a parody, they put their fingers into a gun shape and brandish them as such, ala 4Kids' Yu-Gi-Oh!. Mostly because Finger Guns are time immemorial and 4Kids didn't bring Yu-Gi-Oh! over here until 2001, well after Sam and Max's cartoon wrapped up.

Would this count as something to be partially deleted? "Blind Idiot" Translation: Twice in the beginning of the English dub. The narrator states Ash is aiming to gain his final badge, even though the Johto league has eight badges, and Ash is currently trying to get his seventh not his eighth. Ash then states he's trying to get his sixth badge, even though he already has his sixth badge. What makes this translation error stand out even more is that the episode title scenes show us how many badges Ash currently has, and this episode's title scene shows he has six at that moment. I mean, the first part is because in some episodes it's stated Ash is working towards his final badge even if he doesn't have it. The second one can stay though.

The only dubs I love from 4kids are Pokémon( seasons and movies 1,2,4, Mewtwo Returns and 5) and Yugioh( DM, Pyramid of Light, Capsule Monsters, and GX.

Erm, can someone help me with this from Lost Aesop? This is why the "Fighting is wrong!" aesop that 4kids forced upon Pokémon: The First Movie fell flat. Such a moral is already hard to push in a series where everything is resolved by way of Pokémon battle,. The Japanese version had a completely different aesop: the circumstances of one's birth don't make them any more or less important than someone else. The irony of course is that the censored version was far closer to Shudo's intended portrayal.

It should be noted that the CGI remake's dub restores the Aesop for the record.

And then there's this from Canon Discontinuity: Inadvertently invoked in regards to 4kids in the first episode of the Funimation dub of One Piece where Luffy remarks "That was fun, but we shouldn't go back there." In the same arc, Usopp panics that "We've got zero, and I mean Zoro...no I mean Zolo chances...no I mean zero chances...wonder how Zoro's doing." Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, also seems fond of introducing plot points relating back to events 4Kids Animation dropped or censored out of its version of the series. Most notoriously, an entire Story Arc was removed. One main character's ultimate goal is a reunion with a character from this arc, while another main character keeps referring back to it. Both of these traits were introduced well after 4Kids had removed this arc. Speaking of 4Kids, they are also guilty of this. Having infamously cut out the entirety of the Little Garden arc, including several major characters (like Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek/Ms. April Fool's Day), the episode immediately following this deleted arc has the characters giving a rundown of the Baroque Works agents. They mention characters they had apparently never met as if they had recently dealt with them.

The words Inadvertently and guilty of this raises major red flags.

While 4Kids gets a lot of flak for their censorship, no one brings up how it was done to appease the network and television standards at the time. Non-cable networks in general are a lot more restrictive on what can and can't be shown in children's television. Stuff that could fly on Cartoon Networks Toonami block would never be allowed to fly on a non-cable network. Often, the censorship they did was done just to get the shows on the air at all. Most of the Americanizing (such as the infamous 'jelly donuts') of the anime they did was frequently at the request of the networks themselves.

Yeah, this: The Scapegoat: Everyone insults 4Kids for their excessive script changes and animation edits. No one talks about how 4Kids had to get approval from the shows' owners whenever they wanted to make a major script change or animation edit in their dubs. This is especially notable for One Piece, as Toei Animation forced the series onto them to get it to western audiences as fast as possible. Everyone also blames them for not finishing their dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, as they believe 4Kids wanted to abandon GX in favor of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds. However, this is only partially correct. 4Kids only abandoned GX because TV Tokyo and Konami forced them to since 5D's premiered in Japan around the end of the third season of the GX dub. This action left 4Kids pretty upset, and it possibly explains why their dub of 5D's ended up as a This example contains a YMMV entry. It should be moved to the YMMV tab.Macekre since they mentioned they didn't have time to test it. Well... That's why this thread exists because of both the page for the company and various slams across other pages as I've posted here on this thread.

If it helps this thread, I feel like it's worth pointing out here that 4Kids was removed from Condemned by History per discussions on that trope's cleanup thread, though more because they had enough detractors from the outset and enough specific works are beloved enough today.

Nice. Also, on Pokémon 4Ever, the Importation Expansion has a pothole to Viewers Are Morons because 4Kids commissioned new scenes to make it clearer Sammy was Professor Oak. To me, that's not "moronic" because 4Kids had to have it explained to them what Tracey finding the sketchbook at the end meant and that's why they had new scenes commissioned. It's one of those things that works in Japan but not over here such as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers, the Wigglytuff Guild is supposed to be a sendup of large Japanese businesses...which completely flew over people's heads in the rest of the world.

I'm submitting a proposal to get rid of Didn't Think This Through video clip for 4Kids because the main page says that One Piece being a "disaster" is mostly due to Toei forcing the anime on them.

Even if this was somehow an issue, I'd say that this is better discussed on the Fallen Creator cleanup thread.

But yeah. They were extremely divisive from day one so there's that.
