"Listen up, Marina, because this is SUPER important. Whatever you do, don't eat th“ “DON'T EAT WHAT?! Your text box ran out of space!”I’m not familiar with the work but seems a bit kneejerky. Can other people weigh in first?
Are the videos scripted to some extent?
back lolJust based on 420 and April Fools, that's exactly the kind of work we want articles of. Also, based on the description, it's the cooking show version of Mythbusters.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.I agree that the show is perfectly tropeable. Babish is a character, so he's not just being himself, and he adds plenty of jokes, and many of the food concepts he takes on, he uses a very creative approach to reverse-engineer.
SoundCloudi don't watch this show but just from a cursory glance of the page, yeah "babish" is clearly a character and it's tropeworthy enough because aside from his character he discusses tropes related to food as he makes it. and there are more food-related tropes than you'd think
It was just that...after reading the thread questioning the tropability of Lets Plays, it made me look at the Babish channel...and made me feel like alot of the tropes that are there are more inexplicably shoehorned in a manner that violates some of the core criteria of what makes a work tropable on this site in the first place.
Yes, someone is playing a character, yes Discussed Tropes are valid...it was just that the Troping Let's Plays discussion thread made me question if it's ever actually worth troping in the first place.
Cassie | he/they | But will it stop the pain forever? / I just can't be sureOkay, now I'm off mobile and more ready to look at pages so:
The troping L Ps thread even leans towards allowing troping of more 'effort'ful L Ps (those who actually script, create characters), the same way stand-up comedians with rehearsed sets are tropable, but not those who just hit record and then make freestyle/unscripted commentary.
After a cursory glance of the page it seems like some of the examples need to be rewritten or removed to not be troping Andrew Rea himself, but otherwise it looks like a good amount can be kept.
Things like the Let's Plays, Streamers and Podcasts are difficult to trope because it is more like watching over someone's shoulder rather than something with storytelling intent. While technically media, it's not really intended as anything more than leaving a webcam running. The line though is how much of the content is curated for an audience, meaning editing, music, narration, title cards, etc. I might question a media page on a random channel or page that posts 15 second but otherwise unedited clips of animals doing cute things, but anyone who is making a clear effort to curate their content for an audience in an effort to tell a story should be fair game.
The thing about most internet-center works is that being made by amateurs doesn't mean their content is any less valid, much of youtube content is not any different from talk shows, radio shows, news programs or documentaries. Binging with Babish is basically a cooking show, completed with clips, personal challenges, technical/historical analysis and even the occasional guest character.
Do you not know that in the service one must always choose the lesser of two weevils!Hang on, that's the wrong thread.

So whilst there's a thread that puts into question the tropability of Lets Plays, it made me realise that...it seems that Binging with Babish (and possibly other web videos of it's ilk) violate some of the core criteria of what makes a work tropable in this site (Such as fictionalization, as Fighteer noted).
