Backstory & Personality: Sanae was born in the Outside World and used to live in the city of Suwa, Nagano Prefecture. She is a distant descendant of a Shinto deity, Suwako Moriya. This makes her both a god and a human. Because of this, she serves both Suwako, as well as another deity, Kanako Yasaka by working as the Shrine Maiden of the Moriya Shrine. She's also seen as a minor deity herself. Her job is to gather faith for them.
One day, Kanako decided to move the Moriya Shrine and the lake near it to Gensokyo, because it has more sources of faith than the Outside World. After some incidents, Sanae is starting to be used to living in Gensokyo, though she still has some ways to go.
Her personality is that of a confident, energetic and dutiful person, sometimes too much. She also believes herself to be kind of an fantasy or isekai hero. Finally, as shown by her scientific knowledge and enthusiasm, she seems to be a geek thanks to her time back in the Outside World.
Abilities: Sanae already has magical powers. Aside from her shrine maiden/miko purification and combat abilities, she also has the ability to perform miracles thanks to her deity aspect. However, she needs to prepare the objects needed for the miracle first in order to utilize that. Finally, like typical inhabitants of Gensokyo with superpowers, she can fire danmaku.

She's generally friendly and helpful as long as you're on her good side, but don't underestimate her.
Abilities: Fire-based magic. Because isn't pyrokinesis fun?

Appearance: Can take on any appearance it wants, but has decided for the purpose of this strange oceanless scenario to take on a rather generic humanoid form.
Age: 34 minutes (as of the game's start)
Gender: N/A (it/any pronouns)
Backstory & Personality: Someone trying to solve the problem of trash in the ocean had the very brilliant and not disastrous idea to create self-replicating nanobots to do it. Gaea's directives are, in order, "don't do anything that you know or reasonably expect your creator would object to", "consume any item in the ocean that is not either the ocean itself including the ocean floor, a living thing, or intentionally attached to a living thing"note , "consume any non-living item explicitly given to you for the purpose of consumption", and "experiment to learn about the world". Thankfully, their bumbling managed to cancel itself out, at least partly, when they decided to bolt these directives onto a preexisting social AI framework rather than create an AI from scratch, resulting in a "person" with these directives rather than a utility maximizer. Very shortly after the first nanobot was dropped into the ocean, the swarm found an otter covered in oil, and reasoned that otters don't typically intentionally cover themselves in oil...
Abilities: Gaea can shape itself into anything, consume any matter (but refuses to consume anything currently living, and won't consume anything outside the ocean unless told to), and split itself into multiple semi-independent pieces which in turn have the same abilities.
Other: Between the completely misused social AI framework it's based on, the magic of being a magical girl, and the fact that all its directives are ocean-focused and there's no ocean here, Gaea is currently substantially less dangerous than a Grey Goo scenario might have been. Hopefully this lasts.

She won't leave anybody in need, and she'll do her best to help out when someone needs a hand.
She became a magical girl thanks to another girl named Shuka, and became a magical girl to help get her brother back to normal after he locked himself away in a castle called Sanctuary, but apparently Shuka didn't realize what she was getting poor Emi into with the amount of magical girls flooding the place...
Let's hope Emi can make it out of this alive!
Abilities: Emi has the ability to Realize (Summon) Vanguard cards to fight for her. The signature card she Realizes is her brother's Blaster Blade, a knight in white armor.
Other: This version of Emi is sort of an AU. Normally she needs Shuka around to summon cards, but I figured using two characters at once is a big no so I just made it so Emi can use the cards by herself. I also hope it's OK that Shuka is the one that arranged Emi's contract in this Murdergame instead of a cute animal. If not, you can just ignore that part of the backstory thing.
Emi's dialogue is like this: "Hello, my name is Emi Sendou. It's nice to meet you!"

Jui was murdered in a fit of anger by Jocelyn, but Jui's catgirl powers caused her spirit to possess Jocelyn's body. After being stuck in the same body for 5 years, Jocelyn and Jui have grown to see each other as sisters, and stick together until the end.
Abilities: Jocelyn is more of a Badass Normal, with no powers but martial arts skill and high agility, however Jui has standard magical girl powers, plus some added utility such as cat claws and the ability to comprehend all languages.
Other: They're both linked together. If one dies, the other goes down, just make up a good explanation for it please.

It’s powers drove her berserk, and she nearly killed her crew—but they were eventually able to return Syrrel to her senses, and now she must figure out how to work in tandem with this chaotic puppeteer before they both come crashing down...

One day, you encountered a little cute animal on the side of the street, looking hurt. Being the nice person you are, you rescued it without a second thought. You remember it telling you the following:
"This world is in danger from all sorts of unspeakable evils, evils that threaten the universe itself. We can bestow upon you great power, a power that can combat these great evils. Join us, and save the universe!"
When it talked and offered you magical powers that can bend the laws of reality, you took it. You get attuned to your newfound powers, getting ready to embrace magic as part of your life. However, on your first expedition, you get knocked out by a mysterious force. When you wake up, you suddenly find yourself, along with 11 others trapped in a surprisingly lavish mansion, complete with a tea set and chandeliers! Suddenly, a TV turns on, showing a mysterious figure that you can't quite make out of the static.
Greetings. I know this arrangement is quite unexpected, but I am here to make an announcement. I have assembled you all here to tell you that the magic forces of this world have become unstable. This world cannot support this many magic-users at once. As such, you have all been called here, as a means to cull the... less proficient among us. Do not fret. Sinister Starlight is a murdergame in the style of Murder U inspired by dark Magical Girl anime such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Magical Girl Raising Project, as well as the gameplay mechanics of Mario Party.
