Misused (single prop crowner 7 April 2021): Up To Eleven

I suspect the reason this stalled is that we're not clear on if we have to clean out all the wicks here, or if we're converting this effort into a cleanup thread, or what.

Wicks could be cleaned on a different thread...

The examples about gauge inflation could be added to a sandbox for Up To Eleven, so the main page can become a redirect.

I really don't think cleaning the wicks is feasible, or even possible. In the 49 days this thread has been open, it's gained 322 more wicks (putting it at 29,182), which is about 6.6 new wicks every day. That's almost the exact same statistic I posted on the first page of this thread, so the growth is remaining consistent and I don't think fighting it is doable.

I think we should just redirect, add the thing to the salvage yard, and call it a day.

That's what I'd rather do too. Cleaning these wicks would just be an exercise in futility.

The only suggestions left is to add the examples about Gauge Inflation into a sandbox for Up To Eleven, put Gauge Inflation in the salvage yard, and get the main page of Up To Eleven redirected to Exaggerated Trope.

Frankly, I don't think size is the reason this stalled out.

I think it stalled out because all crowners with "create a new trope" options go awry. People just move on once the crowner is called and folks who do post-crowner cleanup usually don't do TLP as well.

Lately we've been drifting away from the idea of doing the TLP work as part of the TRS work. Most often we just kick it to the Salvage Yard (which, sidenote, really needs to get the Administrivia-shift if we're going to keep using it like this), unless someone right off the bat wants to sponsor it. So I don't think that's the issue here.

Whether or not Gauge Inflation is TLP'd now or in a month or in five years, there's never a guarantee it'll be launched in a timely manner anyway, and so it's genuinely not something I'm concerned about. We can stick it on the Salvage Yard and let people work on it if they care to. If not, oh well, we did as much as we possibly can on the TRS itself (as far as that issue goes at least).

I honestly think the issue is that we can't agree on how to handle the wicks, or if they should be tackled at all.

We already voted on the TLP in the crowner.

How about a single prop crowner for whether there should be wick cleaning?

If we decide to do it, then we make a long-term project thread (if we don't have it already). If not, we redirect and leave.

Sandbox.Up To Eleven has been started to house the old examples. Going to recycle the quote as it could fit Gauge Inflation.

That way, we can convert into a redirect without a hitch.

The point of merging/making something a redirect is that you don't have to clean wicks, right? I thought that was the main argument in favor, because other options like cutting or cleaning require too much work. So not sure why wick cleaning is on the table.

Because under normal policy, we don't want redirects to have wicks except in special cases like Les Yay.

Should we discuss about the Video Example and Quotes page too. I'll bring the question about the language pages in the Translations forum.

Though, this could be handled in the thread if there is enough consensus.

...since before I joined the wiki? Redirects are for searching and for catching inbounds, not as alternate trope names and definitively not for sinkholing. The only exception I know of was Incredibly Lame Pun.

Gendered redirects and the like seem to be okay, hence why Les Yay is okay. I don't know why Incredibly Lame Pun is allowed to be used when it's a really bad pothole magnet, but it could be the same situation as here: too many wicks to clean up.

If we make a TLP for Up To Eleven's current definition, then it would make the most sense to disambiguate it since it could cause legit confusion. In that case, cleaning the wicks would be helpful, even if it'll be a huge project.

I just wish that policy was clarified before we made the crowner. I voted for the redirect because I thought it would get us out of wick cleaning. Leaving the redirect feels super pointless if we're not keeping the wicks either way.
