Color Tropes Cleanup

Go To

Much like other appearance tropes, Color Tropes are often horribly misused or just generally ZCE-bait. Their very nature makes it too easy for shoehorns to slip under the radar, as it's hard to really tell what's an example of Red Is Heroic and what's just a hero in red. Color Tropes do have actual meanings to them, in most cases- but that meaning gets lost in a sea of examples that are just "character + color", with no attempt to connect the color to the character in any meaningful way.

As such, this thread will tackle these tropes. We'll figure out which ones are being misused and work to cleanup the misuse however we can.

For a list of tropes we're working on and intend to work on, see Color Tropes Cleanup.

Well, the wick check is halfway done now... *cough cough shameless plug cough cough*

So far it's overwhelmingly just "character has (color) hair". There's a wealth of "blue hair" examples but with the way they're written I can't determine if they're interpreting the trope as being about the color or not.

I wonder how many are Water Elemental Hair or something...

Feel free to go and cross-reference what I have so far; it might reveal a bit more. I'm looking at the wicks in isolation from any other on-page context.

I think one question that would be interesting to know is how many examples are about naturally occurring exotic colours and how many are about coloured hair. Things that don't occur in Real Life cannot be Chairs and it's questionable that they could be considered misuse.

None of them so far are naturally occurring, unless you count red, but I assume that means literal red.

My question though is why completely-made-up things can't be chairs if they otherwise have no actual meaning? It's an artistic choice, sure, but it rarely has any meaning behind it from what I can tell. Isn't that what PSOC is all about?

No, because "meaning" isn't what makes a trope. Tropes are conventions and tricks of trade in storytelling. They often have, but don't have to, have a meaning. Artistic decisions are still tropes. It's just things that happen incidentally like folks sitting on chairs that aren't tropes, but things impossible in Real Life cannot be incidental.

I guess that's fair.

Admittedly its 6:00 AM over here and I should be going back to sleep. [lol] This trope isn't worth staying up over, so I'll be taking my leave. Let's see what others think in the meantime.

“Exotic hair colors are normal” is tropeworthy on the work-wide level I think, but you wouldn’t trope it at the individual character level. It’d be listed for the work as a whole rather than for individual characters.

So is it worth doing the other 47 wicks on the wick check?

Maaybe. It could at least be used to support an argument to split the trope. I don't know if splitting is necessary but since that topic has come up more than once it might be worth considering I suppose

A'ight, I'll finish it. It's not exactly a difficult one anyway so it won't take much longer.

Do we have a page for warm and cool colors? Color Contrast mentions it...

Thinking about it since looking at the Vibrant Orange discussion: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/discussion.php?id=xc7oeonpu5wiqway94fr0dtr

So why does Yellow/Purple Contrast require an In-Universe connection while red/green and orange/blue don't?

I mean sure, it's more interesting when there's that extra context but I still find it weird.

I don't know if it's already been discussed somewhere sine I rarely ever go to TRS, but I think Color-Coded Characters may need some cleanup because many examples are just "different characters just happen to wear different clothes color", even when the characters are not associated to these specific colors outside of their clothings.

At the very least we might need to do a check-up.

Morguing this thread as requested. Problem tropes can be taken to TRS.
