Anyway regarding what they said for season 2, so they're really going for a "No matter w/c ending you chose, New Vegas is screwed", huh?

Taking bets that the tunnelers appear :P

Never did like Avellone's vision of the series, but tbqh the way the show handles it feels worse. Like I said, a big part of the appeal of Fallout for me is that every game is a fleshed-out setting with various locales, factions, and major figures in conflict and competition with one another for control of their little slice of the wasteland, and even Avellone's Van Buren, which the show takes the whole "nuke the NCR" cue from, heavily featured places and groups like New Canaan, the Twin Mothers, the Ciphers...

It was far and away going to be the bleakest and most apocalyptic entry in the series but not even remotely on the scale of what the TV show has done, with nearly every single scrap of civilization on the surface world seemingly stamped out and replaced with pure anarchy where wandering bands of cannibals prey on travelers and scavengers eke out a living digging up scrap to barter for food and water in shantytown bazaars, and the only major factions are a paramilitary cult we see a lot of and a different paramilitary cult that we don't see a lot of tongue

Here's something funny.

Apparently, Elon Musk showed up at the Fallout party at SXSW and nobody looks happy to see him.

Oh, that's some very old news lol. That's one of the pre-release press events evil grin

Fun fact though: Elon loooooves hanging out with videogame developers and was reportedly pretty buddy-buddy with Todd during the early development of Starfield after its initial announcement, which explains a lot about that game's extremely milquetoast libertarian vision of humanity's future :P

[1] I really hope the tone picks up next season and that we get more wacky stuff and faction-ing going on. I liked the occasional silliness the later games went for and to the show's credit, it nailed that aspect, at least. But if the story's just gonna be 12 variations of "Everything sucks no matter what," then why bother?

Apparently S2 was already in pre-production before S1 even dropped. So the showrunners doing a 180 on their stance of "No civilization anywhere" is unlikely to happen in this timeframe

i may just be a fallout 3 fan but imo i take issue with the 'new vegas is dead again, who cares' attitude

as the series itself says, war never changes. The West Coast BoS get punked, the NCR is going through a recession because of the BoS nuking their gold standards, the world almost ends three different times in New Vegas (Elijah's plan, Big MT's experiments, and then the Divide missiles)

hell, the Divide and the choices you can make with the missiles from the Divide show that a second apocalypse might've already happened!

and this is coming from someone who hated how Lyons and the Lone Wanderer were handled in Fallout 4

things get bad, but things always can be improved. i know people hate 76, but the game didnt stop because we found out all the survivors were wiped out by a horrible zombie virus; hell, you help settlers... settle into the remains and build a functioning society

Two things which are still haunting me about this show are The woman giving birth to the gulpers, which is like stacking several horror tropes into one. 1)forced pregnancy 2)with inhuman/monstrous 'children' (not just ONE but several of them) 3)who then eat you alive moments afterwards And then there is like one single line in episode 6 which nobody brings up, and maybe it is meaningless, and I am reading too much into it Birdie mentions her mother was A courier (not THE courier) and I kept wondering if that was a reference to FO:New Vegas- but then, there are probably a lot of couriers all across the wasteland, and it would make little sense chronologically for them to be the same person.

Depends on how old the Courier is meant to be.

A single mention of "A" courier doesnt mean much.

NV established that Courier Six (the PC) was one of several who worked for the Mojave Express and that the Mojave Express was one of several courier agencies.

Sure. But if they were trying to reference the Courier i think they would have been more specific.

Hell, Ulysses was a courier.

I don't doubt the use of "courier" was itself a reference, but I do doubt it was to anything specific.

As they have noticed, in Fallout 2 there was many advantages in playing a woman with high charisma and to sleep with everyone. You could even become a porn star.

Nothing will beat New Vegas where you can sleep with the man who shot you. You don't even need to kill or steal from him in his sleep, you can just sleep with him and then let him go.

Just finished episode 6. Oh my god, they showed the voice of Codsworth! That in and of itself would be amazing, but the fact that its Matt Berry (I knew he was the voice of the Codsworths, but didn't expect him to physically appear), just makes it that much better.

[down]Oh god, I completely forgot that they are called Mr Handies. Stephen Russell really does have range, you'd never guess Codsworth and Valentine were the same actor. Great casting of Berry though, he does sound somewhat like Russell and (to a lesser extent) Lowenthal in the role.

[up] They're called "Mr. Handys", not "Codsworths", hehe. And they're voiced by Stephen Russell outside this show, fwiw. But yes, excellent casting decision tbqh, and a nice (if wholly unnecessary tongue) little origin story for the voice XD

[up] Well technically, they were voiced by Stephen Russell in 3 and 4. I think they were voiced by Yuri Lowenthal in New Vegas.

Just finished the show, and I thought it was incredible! I love the characters, the plot, the tone, the soundtrack and the setting. The Ghoul is the most fun to watch, but Lucy is probably my favourite character, and I can't wait to see how she develops. I love the pre-war plot as well, the building up of tension was incredible. I loved the portrayal of the Brotherhood.

As for the controversial stuff:

  • Vault-Tec starting the war: I actually think that works. It demonstrates the extent at which pre-war America had become controlled by corporations and I think it fits surprisingly well. I get why some people think it it's an asspull, but I think it does make sense when you consider the experiments portrayed in the vaults. Whether this was the original intention of the series or not (while I doubt it was the intention from the first game, the proposed Fallout Movie demonstrates that it was thrown around during the Interplay days), but it does feel like the games have been building up to it with the portrayal of the experiments. Ultimately, it is a comment on capitalism, an unsubtle comment (not that this series ever was particularly subtle), but one that fits in well into the series' usual commentary.

  • The NCR being destroyed: I don't mind that too much since it feels like a logical place for the series to move to going forward (the post post-apocalypse of New Vegas was great, but several endings did suggest that it was becoming a bit too post post-apocalypse, though that still would have been interesting). I get why people felt like it invalidates player choice at the end of NV, but too be fair that's always likely with choice-based games. The only thing I dislike is when Shady Sands is destroyed, which does create a bit of a continuity snarl, but at least they confirmed NV is still canon. Plus, the ending does leave the NCR/society in the wasteland with some hope, so it's not all doom and gloom.

  • Robert House: This was the one I dreaded the most, the ruining of one of Fallout's most interesting and multi-faceted characters. I'm am pleased to say that, at least so far, that isn't the case. It does remove some of his genius by showing he knew for a fact the bombs were coming (though, to be fair, the writing was on the wall anyway), but does add a level of sympathy by suggesting he learnt about Vault-Tec's plans so immediately went to protect what he could. All of it depends really how he replied to the suggestion for the corporations to drop the bombs: we don't actually see his reaction after it's suggested. Given he did go back to save Vegas, instead of doing it in the framework of vaults like the plan suggested, did suggest some disagreement, though ultimately it will depend on whether it's revealed whether he did agree or not to the plan. Him going to save Vegas does have the alternate character interpretation of whether it was just for his power, but the ambiguity about the extents House is altruistic and/or power-hungry is a key dichotomy of his character anyway.

  • New Vegas seeming small. That just seemed like a budget issue really, and it isn't actually that much smaller compared to the game (though granted the game does imply that the city is larger, just downsized to fit into a game). I imagine when it appears again, it will be larger.

Some issues, but overall fantastic series. I get why some people dislike the stuff above, and I do have mixed opinions about some of it, but overall I think the show is great and a worthy instalment to the franchise.

A lot of things you mentioned won't be made clear until season 2 so it's hard to say if any of the worries/criticisms are valid. We don't know how they will portray House and NV in season 2. I'm also of the opinion that the NCR wasn't nuked, only Shady Sands was. And this is in keeping with the series' themes (war never changes).

Yeah, New Vegas being small is a case of Space Compression, it would be strange if the second season decides that that is its true size.

It's like someone adapted Warcraft, and it actually turns out that cities only have like 5 houses

[up][up]Exactly. We know Shady Sands is destroyed, but there are explicitly at least some NCR remnants, it's just the extent of pf the remnants that is at this point ambiguous. The series is also purposefully ambiguous about House's role in the apocalypse, meaning he isn't ruined in my eyes, yet at least. And with Vault-Tec being the greater-scope villains, a lot of that will come down to how the next seasons and/or games handle it.
