Pretty much Exactly What It Says on the Tin, what do you consider a good source of Nightmare Fuel?

For me, I consider anything that can trigger my thalassophobia that be it sharks, whales, vast empty water, etc.

Depends. In horror things such as video games and the such, I always find slow moving monsters that force you to keep you on your toes much more scarier can those that move at a faster pace. Probably because they produce much more tension, and I have had nightmares that are like that.

But if you're talking more about phobias... I guess the thought of being stuck with no way out is what scares me the most.

Either option works, be it fiction or otherwise.

Let's see...

  • Suffering injuries or illness that is impossible or really hard to recover from.
  • Bankruptcy.
  • Getting black bagged and mutiliated/murdered by shadowy organizations, be it Mexican cartels, black ops agents, etc.
  • Anyone other than my immediate family members entering my bedroom unannounced.
  • Bugs

Hagfish. A worm-like, primitive, slimy fish that devours its prey from the inside and eventually (spoiler tag for Squick) causes its hollowed-out corpse to explode and deflate.

Eye Scream is so bad for me that I even hate it when it’s Played for Laughs. I don’t even like to look at real/realistic eyes.

Being attacked from an odd angle, such as from the sides, or from somewhere I cannot see. Especially if that surprise attack is acompanied with a noise.

I actually can go through a lot of horror games without fear or panic, but as soon as something attacks me and I can't determine where it is, or if it catches me off guard, It gets the fear of god into me. Actually, pretty much any sensory deprevation puts me on edge. Especially darkness.

Gonna think of more things later though.

...is that typical behavior from your mother?

Anyway, since I’m here now, my phobia is brambles. Not sure if there’s a reason in my past for it or anything, but I’ll lock up before going near them.

Gonna agree with dRoy's first bulletin in that suffering permanent or hard to recover from injuries are my biggest fear, and the thought of being unable to move whatsoever particularly strikes a nerve in me.

@Spotted: Aw, I think hagfish are cool. What scares me is one of the other kinds of jawless fish, the lamprey. The real life source and trope namer for Lamprey Mouth. I can barely look at those things.

My biggest fear is the idea of having to swim across deep waters, the idea that even moderate exhaustion could easily result in death

Also anything that tries to enter your eyes or literally getting under you skin freaks me out

Being stuck on something and pulled up to a waiting mouth. Think like barnacles from Half-Life, I'd get a heart attack if I ran into a tongue and got pulled up to their mouths.

Being chased by something huge and catching up to me before I can hide.

Being alone with a psychopath with intent on killing me and can appear from anywhere. The last one is especially unnerving if I'm in a big mansion with labyrinth-like structure and so many places to go. I just won't ever feel safe, because my soon-to-be murderer will always be out there...somewhere.

In real life, people.

For real though, in fiction what scares me is the paranoia that something is wrong, but you can't put your finger on what it is until is too late. Existential Horror also scares me a lot.

And catterpillars, catterpillars scare me too...

And to add to my fear about psychopaths, imagine an immortal, unkillable person who won't stop at nothing to murder you. Or someone who has Diplomatic Impunity and no matter how hard you try, nobody will take you seriously or help you as this violent individual wants to murder you in slow and painful way.

Being eaten alive by insects or aliens or eldritch monstrosities is also...yeah. Like imagine some alien worms that enter your body and eat you alive from inside and you rapidly deflate or explode. Being eaten by a lion or a bear is NOWHERE near as scary as being eaten by millions of alien or eldritch or whatever out-of-this-world maggots, worms, insects, nano-organisms.

[up][up]For your immortal Karma Houdini psychopath, that's basically Nyarlathotep in a nutshell. He's basically an Eldritch Abomination with a sociopathic mindset. By the way, hagfish are mostly scavenger feeders, meaning that they mainly feed on dead animals, and the only live prey they eat are small crabs and cephalopods.

Anyways, I have one thing to say: Fluffy Pony.

I think I have a subconscious fear of drowning. I've nearly drowned about 3 times in my life. I visited a therapist with my mum once and she said that it was a shared thing we had, but i honestly don't know how true that is. Both my mum and I can swim just fine but it would make sense if it was only a subconscious fear
