x-posted from teh US culture thread:
- Instagram removes 'likes' from the social media app - forcing users to focus on photos and videos rather than how popular posts are
- tl;dr - in Australia, Instagram users can't see the likes of a photo or video, only the account holder can see those.
- per the article "The same rule is also in place in Canada, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Brazil, and New Zealand - but not yet in the UK or US."
This will cause CHAOS when they do this in the US. I predict that it's to make the "Influencer" Deader Than Disco.
When you hear of adventures in human stupidity or entitlement in the US that are not Florida-man, it's some cretin that claims to be an "influencer" or is doing it "for the 'gram".
I predict that hiding likes will cause the Instagram "economy" to collapse - it will force a lot of the "models" to Pateron (ask your UK friends about Belle Delphone and bathwater).
There is a HUGE subculture in the US of Instagram "models" and "influencers" that I think that the management of Instagram views as an Old Shame.
Get some popcorn when this happens, this will be good.
All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48- Belle Delphine has been "banned" from Instagram.
Time will tell if this is going to take the idea Instagram star from household name to Deader Than Disco.
But I'm going to call it. Belle was the high water mark of the "Internet Celebrity".
People are going to move on from crap like this. In about 5 years I predict that due to changes in Instagram and other social media's TOS and people sick of the idea of "influencers".
All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48Okay, can someone tell me who the fuck Belle Delphine is already? All I know about her is that she dolls herself up to look like some anime girl and takes ahegao selfies, and some meme involving bathwater.
She's an Instagram influencer who sells the image as a living "gamer girl" stereotype.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI was recently introduced to the app by... someone I don't really consider a friend anymore, a pretty toxic person in general, but I figured I was putting stigma on the app itself. I mean at least a few non-toxic acquaintances of mine use it so it can't be that bad.
But all I see on it are these disparaging, negative memes that make these awful, unnerving comments about life and relationships - some of it's funny and relatable, like what you expect from a significant other on social media vs what that person actually does and how little they care. Other times it's just paranoia-inducing, like asking if your friends are "talking to you" or if they're just "reacting." Does anybody really need to read stuff like that right now?
I've heard that tiktok is great for people with short attention spans. I'm feeling like Instagram is great for mean-spirited cynical people. And softcore porn - because everytime I open the app I'm staring at somebody's gloriously shaped ass.
Which might say a lot about my continued use of it admittedly.

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!
Considering there is a thread devoted to You Tube, I figure there should be a thread for the image sharing website.
