I'm surprised there is no thread for this yet (Yes I did a search), as I've seen snippets online, and the movie is due to debut (on select theaters) on the USA in a few days. No spoilers here- its all on the trailers.

Anyway from what I could gather, the movie *is* a sequel to the original series, but set 10 years later; Koji returns to Japan and- somehow all the robot monsters he ever fought are back!? Theory: travel from a parallel universe might be involved (I think I caught a glimpse of God Mazinger, which is set in another dimension).

Its nice to see a grown up Koji and Sayaka (the latter seems to be a scientist now, probably took over her father's place as Director of the Photonic Research Lab). Oh and Boss and the gang are back too.

Thankfully the CGI/Animation mix works (very good in places, though not so much in others.) And the music is still great! Of course that could be the Nostalgia talking; Z was the first cartoon I was a big fan of. Looking forth to this film.

A bigger question would be, is this an alternate timeline that split from the end of Mazinger Z but before Great Mazinger? Or from Grendizer (where Kouji graduated from his studies in the US)?

There’s a limited theatrical run of the film, and I plan on seeing it Sunday. I just wish it had an earlier time than 7:40, but the fact it’s playing at all is a small miracle.

I saw a screencap from a clip released by Fathom Events showing Great Mazinger is indeed in it, so I'm guessing it's like the Mazinkaiser OVA: a broad strokes sequel that plays fast and loose with continuity.

Saw it in November, but the theater release in France was quite puzzling: While they tried Advertising by Association with Grendizer (Goldorak in France), not a lot of people know what Mazinger Z is (they tried to air after the success of Goldorak/Grendizer in the late 70's early 80's), but they still distributed despite the fact that it's a sequel of a show that almost nobody saw.

But I liked it. And that ending song, my god.

I'm not crazy, just creatively different.

Well, Today's the day. Sadly the movie's not airing anywhere near where I live. Hopefully we will get the Spanish version. Meanwhile please post any spoilers you want here- I love them! (properly hidden for those don't of course)

It was an hour and a half drive to get there, but I saw it. Very fun. Not much depth to it, but it didn't need it.

I just got back from the movies after thinking it aired last night (it aired tonight) and well, it was a lot of fun. The interviews beforehand make it clear they wanted to focus on the action and it succeeded in that admirably.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this. ^_^;; Is it my imagination or does one of the ladies look a lot like an adult Kagome?

I smell magic in the air. Or maybe barbecue.

I _liked_ it, but it's a bit frustrating how it seems to flirt with the idea of some high concept, kinda decontrustive elements that are kinda cool but it really fleshes them out as far as they could go, like Photon Energy having reality warping capabilities (we're just sorta told the bad guys came back this way instead of shown), the idea of Koji struggling with whether or not he's a Blood Knight like Dr. Hell predicted is just sorta thrown in at the end. This mostly just kinda irks me because the entire second act of the film feels a bit devoted to navel gazing that doesn't really go anywhere...

But the final act is cool as hell once Mazinger Z finally takes the stage. I think overall, I'm still more a fan of the Mazinkaiser OVA but it was totally worth it seeing the original super robot on the big screen.

Having never seen any Mazinger before, this was a really cool movie.

Great depiction of action, and I actually dug the philoso and techno babble.

Honestly, it leaves me wanting more. In a good way, mind you. I'd really like a new Mazin (or Getter Robo) series.

Thread necromancy, because I just saw the DVD today.

It throws a few concepts without really fleshing them out and I'm still indecisive about Lisa, but otherwise, holy crap, was that epic. The action sequences are just amazing, and they managed to avoid the trap of getting too dark as I was afraid it would be. And Borot's scene is just plain cartoony, I love it.

Also, it seems that they borrowed some elements from Getter Robo, notably that "Getter rays... Sorry, photonic energy messing up reality" some people have evoked here. Considering the two franchises belongs to the same distributor (if I'm not mistaken), this is hardly surprising.
