This episode also caused me to realise something. I never realised exactly how short Hinata is before this episode. I knew she was shorter than Kimari but I didn't realise that she was shorter than Yuzu since the camera angles on the who tend to de-emphasise the height differences.
The poster on the series' page exaggerates how tiny she is though…
But I reiterate, why did they punish her too? That whole funk was pretty much entirely Shirase's fault.

I think Shirase is just really tall.
Shirase is pretty tall, yeah.
I imagine they punished Hinata too because she forgot where her passport was, then waited a full 12 hours or more to actually tell them what was going on, and then immediately jumped to 'okay, go without me'. Yuzu and Kimari were probably mainly upset that she had lost something so important instead of keeping track of it, and making them worry, but Shirase was upset that Hinata was willing to sacrifice their four-person Antarctica dream for what she imagined Shirase wanted - AKA, refusing to let anyone be considerate for her while being considerate of someone else.
It's been fun. Also she immediately forgot that she gave Shirase her passport, so it's kind of her fault too.
Yeah, that's the kind of thing you're supposed to remember.
Edit: And while I think about it, if she hadn't waited so long to tell them, Shirase might have remembers that it had been handed to her before she went diving in her purse.

Well, all's well that ends well (even if Shirase has given in to the devil and developed a taste for durian). Next week is a new adventure for our intrepid band of goofs.
It's been fun.So far this is my anime of the season and I don't usually watch slice of life. Hakumei to Mikochi might be better in that genre. I don't know, since I'm saving that for next season.
This seems like a great season for slice of life fans, but other than that it's just march comes in like a lion (which I'm still in the fall material for.) and ancient magus bride.
Regarding this season, I don't think I've ever kept track of this many anime at once… I'm not sure I'd classify Yorimoi as "slice-of-life" per se, though. It really feels like its own thing.

Tell me about it, this season is awesome, this series is among my favorites.
I added pics to the character page. It made me notice that the website listed a number of characters that have yet to appear (including some male ones)… but not Shirase's mom.
This week: Shirase being Shirase, a ninja spy mission, uncertainty about the viability of the mission, our first visual glimpse of Shirase's mom, and a very heartwarming Brick Joke. Also, German subtitles for some reason.
And damn, Takako is like the lovechild of Kimari and Shirase.

I think this might have been my favorite episode yet. I'm really glad that they're giving us the adults' perspective on the whole trip.
(I see I wasn't the only one struck by how similar Takako seemed to Kimari. I demand that this show punch me in the gut when we find out what happened to her.)
In addition, while it might be somewhat Anglo-centric on my part, I'll confess that upon hearing about people lost and presumed dead on Antarctic expeditions, my thoughts automatically turn to the Terra Nova Expedition. Part of me would like to see that referenced somehow, although that's just my personal desire, of course.

Oh God! Natural light!I'm sure Hinata will make up a good bedtime story about the ghosts of the expedition members haunting the place.
A detailed analysis of the OP, and boy there are a LOT of details to analyse.
Shirase is an national treasure. And I get the feeling that she would get a surprisingly huge following in-universe?
Another reminder that this expedition is underfunded but determinated as hell. Are civilian expeditions really something that almost never happens?
I'm not even going to question the point of wearing those masks was.
Well, it seems now everyone is on the same page.
After a few rewatches, I realised a few things.
- In the OP, Yuzuki's crawling behind the other girls while they're walking on the seawall. And in the helicopter shot, she's cowering in a corner absolutely terrified. Why? Because she's afraid of heights (Ep 7).
- During the chase sequence in Ep 2, Hinata displays very good running form for sprinting, especially compared to the other two girls. This indicates that she's had actual training in running, which is all but confirmed in her flashback in Ep 6 which implied that she was in the track-and-field club before dropping out of school. It also implies that the track shoes she was looking at while packing in Ep 5 were her old shoes...though that may not be the case, since we don't yet know her full backstory.
I wonder what other hidden clues there are...?
Episode 8: Reality Ensues, and it smells like vomit. But finally the destination is in sight.
Probably a lot. This show has details hidden everywhere. I'll have to rewatch it after it's done.

Thought this episode was a bit boring, to be honest - the girls seemed rather miserable a good chunk of the time, and get over it a touch too quickly for my taste. My dislike for physical exertion may have played a role in this, mind you (I always hated gym in middle school).
Still, at least we're here now.

Oh God! Natural light! This episode was lots of fun. Nothing like seeing people be miserable. This show does such a good job of selling the sense of adventure. Really hyped for next episode.
Now how they didn't catch a cold after getting splashed with probably near-freezing water is a wonder.
You don't catch viruses just from being cold and wet.
You know what would be funny plot if not for one of the episodes of the season, then at least an OVA? The girls watching The Thing and spending the rest of it freaking out. Because watching The Thing is apparently popular among antarctic expeditions.
Turns out this whole series was just a lengthy prologue to an anime version of The Thing.
Oh God! Natural light! That would be hilarious, actually. Though I think it would probably wreck Shirase and Yuzuki.
It's been fun.
Yeah, this felt like a filler at first, since nothing of importance happened, besides a pointless mishap that goes nowhere, but it does serve an important role in developing Hinata character and her relationship with Shirase. So yeah, a good episode.
