This is just a list of characters with Vs in their names that tropers find attractive.

Looked at the example list and yikes. Tons of Zero Context Examples!

Let's try to filter the examples down to those that are seen as attractive In-Universe and see what we have. If the amount is insufficient, we may see a cut.

This is a trope: its the usage of the letter V to emphasize a character is attractive. I agree the examples need work though.

Really, I think that Stock Sexy Name would be a much better trope.

This is nonsense. Someone noticed that some sexy women have names that start with 'V', and made a ridiculous generalization. I'm fairly certain we could make 25 similar tropes.

The page image alone shows how ridiculous (and subject to misuse) this is. I've seen Veronica Mars, and the character is not portrayed as particularly sexy. Yes, they chose an attractive actress—but that's because of Hollywood Beauty Standards.

If anything, a name starting with 'V' may suggest a German or Eastern European heritage (Victor von Frankenstein, Vlad Dracul). Which in turn can imply a certain amount of exoticism—but not just sexy exoticism—it also covers creepy or scary exoticism. Victor (which this claims is sexy) is a common name for villains.

And lots of 'V' names don't even do that. And certainly don't imply sexiness. Veronica is pretty generic. Violet is more often chosen to suggest the "shrinking violet"—either directly or as ironic contrast. Victoria is often a frump. Van is just some guy. Vlad and Vassily are probably bad guys.

Stock Sexy Names make some sense (we can include things like Brandi and Candi). This makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't think Stock Sexy Names is even a thing.

The only thing I would say is an actual thing thing related to this is Stock Prostitute Names.

The problem with attaching traits like "sexy" to names on a trope page is that names are far too widely used. There is a pattern, but it's not 100% used allt he time those names show up. It's more like a tendency, much like short names tend to be for simpler character and longer names for nobles, etc. The problem with that is that tropers are bad at handling those kind of tropes, which this discussion shows.

[up]x4 well anything like that would have to be in universe only. I can think of a few works that make comments on names as like ‘that sounds hot’ and such.

Barney in How I Met Your Mother does it at least once.

I agree that this page as it is now should be cut, but we should consider Tropes in Aggregate.

I belive "sexy stock name" could be a thing.

  • Barney in HIMYM hears about Michelle, who is Lily's friend from high school. He says Michelle sounds hot, and that is based only on her name.
  • (From a film which name I don't remember) — a young guy falls in love with a girl who is really gorgeous. He imagines she has an exotic and extraordinary name, like Danielle (and he mentions another similar name), but it turns out her name is completely ordinary.

I agree that Name Sounds Sexy sounds like it could be a trope.

Cut. Whatever potential trope there is about sexy names should be handled in the TLP.

Instead of cutting this trope, how about commenting out the ZC Es?

Would "Merge into a TLP Draft for Name Sounds Sexy" be an option?

Adjusted the crowner entry for a TLP draft, but yes, it's a consideration.

Merging wouldn’t help cause not a single example of that trope is on the page so it’s all getting trashed anyway.

Larkmarn Since: Nov, 2010 Relationship Status: Hello, I love you

[up] Yeah, the proposed new trope is such a wildly different trope that calling it a merge seems a bit strong. I say just cut.

idea Let's just make a new TLP draft with the name that Malady suggested.

Cutting this page doesn't prevent us from making a Name Sounds Sexy trope page, if it actually is a trope.
