What's your source?
I don't believe it for a minute.
Anyone could claim they wrote My Immortal. We're gonna need a lot more evidence before I can say it's real.
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."There's this, for one. And this.
I would not typically consider Buzzfeed or Vox as credible sources, but this seems to have more weight behind it than some random person saying "yeah I know the author and it was a joke."

Let's see here... She was put in child pornography? She wrote a terrible Harry Potter fanfic to find her brother (and, may I ask, why would you do so by writing a dumb Harry Potter fanfic)? And to top it all off she has Native American ancestry?
There's a slim chance it could be true, but I have the feeling that she's gonna turn out to be this decade's James Frey.
"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."I have no idea right now to believe this.
I need a source right fucking now.
Please allow me to introduce myself, I am a man of wealth and taste. Nice to meet you, hope you can guess my name.@Vampireandthen

Does that help with the three sources already posted?
She had to come out of hiding because people were thinking she was Lani Sarem (she of the Handbook For Mortals clusterfuck), so she updated a very old account to refute that. She never meant to be outed, but she was (and seems okay with it now), and is working with a publisher to tell the intertwined stories of trying to find her brother in the foster system and writing the world's greatest trollfic as an escape.
@Aldo 930 Given that she was a young Native American girl in a foster system that only wants perfect white babies, along with the horrific treatment of NA children, it's not that far off from believable. We'll see when she publishes the memoir.
/off political soapbox, sorry

It's not so much that as she's probably faking it. It's not unheard of to fake a tragic backstory and claim you have Native American ancestry.
But I could easily believe that were it not for the rest of the story. I can remember too many cases like this not to know how it's going to end up - most likely everyone will fawn over the book, then evidence will come out saying that she made up a lot of the book, and then people will call her out.

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Something feels different about this one, actually. I think this may be the genuine article.
Please allow me to introduce myself, I am a man of wealth and taste. Nice to meet you, hope you can guess my name.Bile Fascination fascinates me.
I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Bumping to cite some really disappointing news: https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/10/9/16428248/my-immortal-still-a-mystery-rose-christo-fake
Not to be assholish... but CALLED IT!!!!
There were too many warning signs already to be sure that this woman was the genuine article. For something like this to happen was arguably inevitable.

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."Let me say as the person who had to delete the examples from the YMMV, Heartwarming, and Awesome pages, that if the author of My Immortal is ever found and verified, the new edits it will generate should be the most well researched and cited in the history of Tv Tropes. All of us must give it our best effort.
I look forward to that day but I am not betting it will happen.

Her brother is awesome.
test
Anyone who had "it was a troll fic" in the pool can now collect.
As it turns out, her name is Rose Christo (rosechristo1 on Tumblr), and she's quite an intelligent, good writer. Has an agent, a publisher, everything.
I can honestly say I wasn't expecting THAT.
I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said "I drank WHAT?"
