I think Lady Butterfly (though the indentation needs to be fixed if she stays), Owl's first fight, True Corrupted Monk, and maybe Guardian Ape should stay.

I think the following the should be cut: the mini-bosses, Owl's second fight as it's a Super Boss, Corrupted Monk Illusion for sounding more like a Goddamned Boss, and Guardian Ape's rematch as it's also a GB. I'm not sure about the others though.

[up] Genichiro definitely counts, as Wake Up Call Bosses almost always overlap with That One Boss in the eyes of a lot of people.

Question, can That One Boss, Goddamned Boss and Awesome Boss overlap?

  • That One Boss and Awesome Bosses can overlap: "A few of them may be awesome, but that still doesn't mean you won't be chewing on the controller in frustration despite it."
  • That One Boss and Goddamned Boss cannot overlap: "A Goddamned Boss is annoying, but is otherwise not considered difficult enough to qualify as That One Boss."
  • I'm not sure about Goddamned Boss and Awesome Bosses, but given that the first one is about bosses that are unpleasant to fight, I believe that the two tropes cannot overlap.

Well I think there are VERY RARE overlaps between Awesome and Goddamned bosses Thanks for info though

Looking the YMMV for Mario Maker 1, I see that there is a requirement that That One Level is limited to pre-installed levels. I mostly agree with that, since otherwise thousands of levels could be argued for.

That said, there's been a recent effort by Team 0% to clear every user-submitted before the Nintendo servers close in April. With a month left, they are down to one level (Trimming the Herbs), and I think there's now enough notoriety for that level to justify adding it as the unique user-created level for Mario Maker 1.

I wouldn't mind making that exception, since the fact it's the last one to have a 0% clear rate makes it arguably the mathematically hardest level in the game.

Yeah, that sounds like a reasonable exception to me.

[up][up][up]For Mario Maker 1, That One Level should be restricted to the 2015 Nintendo World Championships courses as those are made specifically for said championships and later added to every copy of the game.

By the way, I find these courses on the easy side, despite their lack of checkpoints, given that checkpoints are introduced in a later content patch and the NWC courses are in the vanilla game.

[up]If they're specifically made for championships first, wouldn't they be disqualified as essentially being a Brutal Bonus Level?

So an update on Mario Maker: "Trimming the Herbs" turned out to be an unbeatable level uploaded using TAS-techniques to get around the clear requirement. Does this disqualify it from That One Level due to being Unwinnable by Design? Would the second-to-last level left unbeaten ("The Last Dance") thus be That One Level?

[down]Gotcha, that makes sense [tup]

[up] I definitely wouldn't add Trimming the Herbs with the new information.

I don't think The Last Dance should be added either; at least part of the reason it was the second to last level was that people really wanted it to be the last level completed due to the name. It's difficult, but not obviously more difficult than the last 20 or so levels in the same way Trimming the Herbs seemed to be.

I'm doubling post after two weeks to mention the newest part of the Trimming the Herbs saga; it was finally beaten by a human. Even though it was TAS-uploaded, I think with a human-confirmed clear it's now reasonable to include it on Super Mario Maker's That One Level list.

[up] It was a TAS level so I don't think it counts since it was never meant to be beaten by a person.
