Poor Image: Mood Whiplash

The current has goofy facial expressions that could be something out of slapstick. "Happy" to "slapstick" hardly seems that drastic a mood whiplash.

All in all, I'm not sure any medium meant to be viewed at several frames per second; be it animated or live action; lends itself as well to illustrating this trope in still-image form as comics or webcomics would. So here's a tentative suggestion from XKCD:

Hmmmm...that does fit the trope more clearly than the current, so I'll support the change pending other suggestions/ideas for the subpages.

Maybe this scene from Mulan? Frames are less than ten seconds apart. One minute they're singing an irreverent musical number and the next they're confronted with a burned out village.

[tup] 3

There's enough context with the background (which the bottom half of the current lacks) as well as with the soldiers wearing the same uniforms. I also like the contrast with the color palettes, with the happier frame being mostly blue-ish / cooler colors and the sadder frame being mostly warmer colors.

Plus it's more concise than OP, which could almost work as a quote (if it were shorter). Also, I don't think the stick figures and the spilled cup add much in terms of an image to the text.

The xkcd one is funny, but I think it also relies on the viewer knowing what the Fresh Prince theme is. Without that knowledge the whiplash is less evident, and instead it looks more like Subverted Rhyme Every Occasion. I like the Mulan one better.

Another suggestion from Future Diary; the two moments are frames apart, and I think the still background and the character's position is sufficient in expressing that.

Not seeing much wrong with current. 3 and 5 may be an improvement since we get to see the reason for the mood change.

I agree with OP that the current picture doesn't show enough of a tonal shift. The emotions of the characters change, but the overall mood of the 2nd scene doesn't seem to shift too much from the goofiness of the 1st.

There's another problem besides that- the two pictures don't look like they come from the same scene. The background and lighting is different, and the man appears to be wearing a different hat in the 2nd pic. Without the caption I'd assume that there was a notable space of time between the screencaps.

Overall there's just not enough of a juxtaposition.

5 seems best so far due to the apparent shortness of the transition.

Yeah, I really like 5. It's more clear, and from that picture you can almost feel the whiplash in itself.

I prefer 3. There's are very strong emotions in those scenes, and they clearly clash.

5 makes me think it's a character trope, and mostly that he's just got the wrong idea, or someone surprised him, or the entire thing is a joke.

[up] #3 also doesn't make clear that one scene occurs soon after the other, so there's a bit of a tradeoff there.

So long as we're on the subject of Disney movies...

If non-comic non-webcomic examples are valid for this, then it's probably too early yet for a crowner; we should probably first gather more thoughts on what makes a good image, let alone gather more of the images themselves.

Given the bubbles, 5 looks like it's a gag. I still prefer 3 for the reasons I already said. I think 3 is better than 15 because the characters are clearly different — there's no orange cat in the first screenshot. But with 3, the characters are in the same uniform, so it's reasonable to say it's the same characters.

Meh, I hate to sound snobbish, but a non-anime image would be better, because there's too many of those on the wiki (as well as Simpsons pictures)

[up] Eh, I don't think we should be stacking the deck against the idea that Simpsons or anime pictures just happen to demonstrate tropes better.

EDIT:

[up][up] It should still be pretty obvious that it's the same box, though, by the text on the paper.

In any case, I'll look for other examples.

Yeah, let's not take into account the media pics come from. What matters is how well they show the trope.

I think we should gather a few more examples first.

I kept forgetting about this thread, and I'm probably too sleepy right now to come up with new entries, but I'll get on it tomorrow.

If the infertility scene from Up was better quality, that would be perfect.
