Explanations first: this game was started by Troper PossiblyQuiteInsane but handed off to me to take over. I have requested and been granted permission to relaunch the Signup so I can officially add new players. All previous players are still in of course.

Game Setting:

The year is 2020. The M-Reactor, a prototype attempt to harness arcane energies as a power source, has mysteriously malfunctioned. This resulted in an energy wave that transformed 3% of the population of North America into monsters from mythology and fiction.

There was no rhyme or reason to the transformations. No factors, biological or otherwise, that linked those affected. But the newly created monsters were soon looked upon with fear and suspicion. Rumors abounded that only the most evil people were transformed. This was not helped by the fact that a small fraction of the transformed began to use their monstrous forms to prey on the weak, becoming monsters inside as well as out.

However, most of the transformed only wished to resume their lives. But this soon became impossible as professional monster hunters from all over the world crawled out of the woodwork, drawn by the stories of those who spread terror and indiscriminate in their hunting. Newbie monster hunters started to emerge from within the civilian population for one reason or another. The world would never be the same again.

This tale is set in the coastal city of San Lorenzo, California, six months after the accident. Many monsters are still adjusting to their bodies, but some are already more than comfortable.

In this RP, your character will be a monster, trying to function in a world that has all too suddenly gone mad. You could also play as a monster hunter, if you so please. But no killing PCs without permission. Your character cannot be invulnerable or overpowered, and there will be no auto-hitting in combat. The person being attacked will decide how the attack affects them.

Character Sheet:

  • Name:
  • Species: - The kind of monster you are playing as. If playing as a human, put Human
  • Skills: - Any skills or abilities your character possesses, whether it's something they knew when they were human or derived from their new physiologies.

Name: Lobo Gris (Luis Gonzalez)

Species: Werewolf

Skills: In werewolf form, typical lycantrophe powers: claws, teeth, animal senses, immunity to anything but silver, etc. However his intelligence is reduced to that of an animal. He only changes during a full moon.

As a human, he is a professional wrestler (yes, he really can kick ass).

Personality: Surprisingly quiet despite his intimidating look. As a werewolf, he's skittish and might attack any perceived threat.

Appearance: Middle aged Latino male. His werewolf form has a short snout and short pointy ears, with grayish fur. He wears grey spandex pants.

Background: Born in Mexico, Luis used to be known as the masked wrestler El Demonio Azul, until The Change hit him in the middle of a match. After nearly killing his opponent, he was subdued. He retired in shame.

However, shortly thereafter, he was visited by Venusina, a wrestler in the Woman's Division. She had been Transformed into a vampire, and proposed an association to form a wrestling league for monsters. At first Luis was doubtful, but once word got around, many people volunteered, so he agreed to give it a try. Taking the new identity of Lobo Gris, he returned to the ring. The Monster Wresting League proved a smash hit. He and Venusina, now know as Vampiresa, also became lovers.

Name: Vampiresa (Teresa del Palmar)

Species: Vampire

Abilities: Typical Vampire abilities- fangs that can draw blood, infectious bite, superior strength, regenerate from any damage except fire or dismembering, etc. She must drink blood at least once a day or grow weak; if deprived of blood she'll go into a bloodlust until she drinks blood or falls into a coma-like state.

She is also a wrestler, more a showy one than an effective one.

Personality: Teresa loves attention, and always "mugs for the camera". Despite this she's an OK person, and sincerely loves Luis.

Appearance: An exotically beautiful woman, Teresa is a long-haired blonde with almond eyes and long eyelashes, a very curvy body (and fangs that she rarely shows.) Her wrestling suit is a one-piece bathing suit with a Dracula-style cape.

Background: A Mexican-American, Teresa was born in San Lorenzo but went Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a starlet. However her career fizzled after her first movie, "Attack of the Women from Venus" bombed. Looking for work, she noticed an ad for attractive women to join the Women's Wrestling division. Despite taking some lumps, she managed to make a name for herself as Venusina (a nod to her former career). And then The Change struck, and turned her into a vampire.

She was furious. She refused to let fate frustrate her again. Then she hit on the idea of a Monsters-only League. But, she knew she would need a big draw to get it started. When she found out what happened to Demonio, she sought him out. It took some convincing, but things worked out.

It's important to note that while Lobo is the figurehead, Vampiresa is the actual brains behind the League.

The San Lorenzo Witches Coven

  • Name: Paloma Dominguez

  • Species: Witch

  • Skills:
    • Paloma's affinity is cats, allowing her to communicate with them, influence them, and in some cases outright control them.
    • Paloma is always accompanied by her Familiar, a ginger tabby named Xochi. Xochi is a construct created by the spirit Paloma made her deal with, and relays everything she experiences back to the spirit even as she assists Paloma. Xochi has all the abilities you'd expect from a cat, plus human-level intelligence.

  • Personality: The coven doesn't have an official leader, but if they did, it would probably be Paloma. The most knowledgeable and experienced of the coven, she's an expert on magic and she wants you to know that. She's an adept manipulator, especially when it comes to using the image of a sweet old lady to get what she wants. She's very attached to Cassandra (and to a lesser extent, Elaine), who she views as as something of a surrogate daughter, and while she wouldn't say she likes Morgan, they do respect one another, somewhat.

  • Appearance: A rotund sixtysomething Mexican woman with shoulder-length gray hair tied back in a bun, wearing a black knee-length skirt and red shawl, always accompanied by a scrappy ginger tabby.

  • Background:

    • In 1969, Paloma's mother contracted influenza. She was ill for weeks, with no apparent end in sight. A then thirteen-year-old Paloma had a dream telling her to go to the Mojave Desert if she wanted to save her mother, so Paloma stole her father's car and drove into the desert. There, she met a spirit who promised her power, enough to save her mother, and Paloma accepted. Paloma was found two days later by the authorities and returned to her family. While she had been gone, her mother had passed away.

    • Paloma spent the next fifty years working at the local animal shelter and practicing magic, aided by a mysterious cat she found who she named Xochi. Children told stories about her being a witch, and adults avoided her with tight-lipped disapproval. Paloma told herself she was fine with this.

    • After the M-reactor malfunctioned, Paloma was visited by Cassandra Gardner, a witch who had been kicked out by her parents. Impressed by Cassandra's lack of fear, Paloma agreed to take her on as a student and boarder. They were later joined by a third witch, Morgan Prescott, to form a coven.

  • Name: Morgan Prescott

  • Species: Witch

  • Skills:

    • Morgan's affinity is for levitation, allowing her to make herself and objects around her float with ease.

  • Personality: Calm and collected, Morgan largely communicates through sarcasm as a means of hiding her insecurities. And she has many insecurities, largely stemming from her screwed-up upbringing and how it relates to her status as an unwed mother and a witch. So she points out others' flaws, she digs into their anxieties, and she makes herself feel better for a while. On some level, she's aware that this behavior isn't healthy, but she can't stop herself. More than anything, she wants to prove herself and be a good parent to Elaine, and while she skews toward overprotective most of the time, it has yet to cause any problems seeing as Elaine is only five.

    • For her part, Elaine is a sweet, precocious girl who likes coloring, cartoon robots, and stealing things (given her lack of guilt over it, it's probably not kleptomania. Morgan is adamant that it's just a phase). Paloma and Cassandra have more or less adopted her as a sort of niece.

  • Appearance: A rail thin blonde with a sharp face and a penchant for sweater vests and dark blue.

    • Elaine is a small, chubby half-Vietnamese girl who wears a lot of pink.

  • Background:

    • Morgan is the middle child and sole daughter of a preppy east coast family. Her father, Darcy Prescott III, had some...interesting ideas about child-rearing, and he pitted Morgan and her brothers, Darcy IV and Elliot, against one another for his affection in the name of making them "strong." Her mother Melinda preferred to verbally belittle Morgan while coddling Darcy and Elliot.

    • During a family vacation in California, nineteen-year-old Morgan met a bartender named Ned Nguyen. The two of them started dating, mostly because Morgan knew her family would never approve of him. A month in, Morgan discovered she was pregnant. Seeing a way away from her family, Morgan convinced Ned to run away with her, and they ended up in San Lorenzo. Morgan attended community college and worked as a waitress; Ned continued tending bar.

    • As Morgan and Ned got to know each other, they soon realized that they were very incompatible in the long term. When Elaine was two, they decided to split up, alternating custody every week.

    • After the M-reactor malfunctioned, Morgan found herself causing things and people around her to suddenly float (and on occasion, floating herself). After a few months of mishaps, she visited a fortune teller for advice (despite being somewhat skeptical about the whole thing). Said fortune teller was Cassandra Gardner, another woman who had developed strange abilities after the M-reactor, and the two formed an unlikely friendship. After Morgan was introduced to Cassandra's mentor Paloma Dominguez, the three of them started a coven.

  • Name: Cassandra Gardner

  • Species: Witch

  • Skills:

    • Cassandra's affinity is for divination. When she is underwater, she can see the future. If time is of the essence, she can just dunk her head, but complete submersion works best for the full effect.

    • Cassandra is an experienced swimmer.

  • Personality: Cassandra is dour, deadpan, and death-obsessed (she would probably qualify as a Goth if not for a fashion sense that some have described as "tweenage eco-fairy princess"). She may be moody and passive aggressive, but her insight and compassion are the glue that holds the coven together.

  • Appearance: A pale girl with shoulder-length auburn hair and a swimmer's build. Her typical outfit consists of a t-shirt, a pink tulle skirt, and purple hi-top sneakers. Also glitter.

  • Background:

    • Cassandra didn't have a particularly fun childhood - bouncing from foster home to foster home and getting bullied relentlessly. Things started looking up in sixth grade, when she joined the swim team and proved to be quite good at it.

    • The day after the M-reactor malfunctioned, Cassandra had a vision of a fire at a hotel during a swim meet. While her school lost, Cassandra, intrigued by what she had seen, visited the hotel and ended up witnessing the fire in person.

    • After several more experiments, Cassandra concluded that something had happened, and she decided to visit Paloma Dominguez, an elderly woman rumored to be a witch. She managed to convince Paloma to take her on as a student and boarder.

    • Cassandra dropped out of school and started working as a fortune teller. It was through this that she met Morgan Prescott, another witch. The two formed an unlikely friendship, and Morgan joined Cassandra and Paloma to form a coven.

I would approve Sanjay, except that:

  • monsters in this setting either are either humans transformed by The Change (the experiment that ran out of control) or were actual monsters hiding all along that started coming out as a result.
  • As far as I know Kappa cannot change form at will, so Sanjay must remain in that form. However coexistence with normal humans is part of the game's challenge.

So fix those details, and I'll approve it.

The Coven is also approved.
