People get Unintentionally Sympathetic/Unintentionally Unsympathetic mistaken for Draco in Leather Pants/Ron the Death Eater all of the time, as they don't realize that the former two the audience has a good reason to be sympathetic or unsympathetic to the character. I had to completely replace the Playing With pages because of this.

[up] US can lead to DILP, though. As can UU to RTDE.

That being said, YMMV items shouldn't have a Playing With page in the first place.

We don't need justice when we can forgive. We don't need tolerance when we can love.

An Audience Reaction can't really be played with. It can happen in certain ways, but since it's a reaction to the work, it's not inherent in the trope. It can be In-Universe and commented upon that way, but that's somewhat different.

Okay now that I think about it neither of the tropes should have a Playing With pages. But the point remains, the former two are about characters who actually have good or bad traits, the latter is about the audience pretending they do.

The difference is that the sympathetic tropes are about playing up existing (un)sympathetic aspects, while the pants eater tropes are about mentally erasing or creating flaws and virtues.

They can overlap and/or coexist.
