Poor Image: Nightmare Fuel.The Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time

The current image is pretty poor quality. I was thinking getting a better image that can work for the page.

Oof...I had to lean in to see what was going on in the current. The suggestion is a marked improvement.

3 > OP > Current. The Dead Hand grabbing Link combined with its tilting head does it for me.

Dead Hand. ReDead model is not really scary compare to the Ocarina of Time 3D version. And that pales to the Wind Waker version.

Oh, I'm considering a quotation along the lines of...

"Some things are better left at the Bottom of the Well"

"And you thought the ReDead was worst thing you've encountered"

"The Dead Hand lends a hand in horror."

Definitely favoring the Dead Hand now.

3 seems good.

Dead Hand is narm. Out of context, he looks more like a fat slob with a cartoonishly big mouth than a menacing foe. Of the current options, the ReDead seems the most fitting.

Here's a bunch of OoT screenshots from an older nightmare fuel thread from a half a dozen years ago. Should I repost them directly into this thread? (Man, I can't believe it's been a half a dozen years...)

EDIT: Managed to come up with a couple Royal Family Tomb screenshots...

Doesn't get much scarier in OoT than the Shadow Temple, though.

Narm is still a ton better than some fuzzy image you can't make anything out of. And personally I think the entire game is narm at best when it comes to scary, but 3 is still the best suggestion so far.

You mean the Royal Family Tomb images in this thread, or the Shadow Temple ones from the other thread? If the former, they could probably be quality-swapped easily enough by finding better gameplay footage. The real question is whether or not they're conceptually more fitting than the Dead Hand, and given the Dead Hand's narm, I'm say that they are.

I failed to make a note of where I got the last two, so I'll just say the following is from about 2 minutes into this video.

Bottom Of The Well also has skeleton imagery...

Also, are screenshots from the 3DS version valid for this? I'm betting those might be a little more crisp.

A difficulty with "is scary" or "isn't scary" is that it's subjective. Skeletons lying around the environment can set the mood with other elements of the game and story, but in a single image, I don't think they convey anything other than "someone died here." Skeletons could also be found in a desert level, but that wouldn't itself be scary. So to the skeleton images. Navi's dialogue in 10.2 could possibly be a page quote imo but the image doesn't add anything to the text.

With the Dead Hand image, there's a large demonic-looking entity manhandling a kid that is about to get attacked or eaten and there's a bunch of demonic-looking hands coming out of the ground. If that looks funny, it at least has characters in action (unlike images of Link standing around). As a kid, I thought it was terrifying, and as an adult, it's nauseous rather than funny.

Even if the image is Narm, it at least conveys some emotional response other than no emotional response (such as stills of the environment of the Shadow Temple or Bottom of the Well). Considering the fact that the game is more adventure/action oriented, I think most stills from the game aren't going to be good images for the page. Maybe someone can find fanart?

I'd file a reminder of the life-threatening nature of the desert under "scary," even if it were done for edutainment purposes.

It's also why the first "Royal Family Tomb" screenshot was the one that warned of the "lurkers in the dark." It makes one suspect the corpse was speaking from experience. The quote-imagery combination was meant to be more than the sum of its parts. Is that example good enough conceptually to be better than the Dead Hand one provided I find a higher-res screenshot?

A still image doesn't show that those hands are working for the Dead Hand, though. Or even that they intend harm, really.

I never got around to it,as a kid, but as a teenager, I found the game to be unusually frightening for an E-rated game. Monsters suddenly coming out of the ground in what seemed during the day to be a peaceful field? A tomb flooded with who knows what kind of green poison for who knows what reason, and infested with zombies who can literally physically impede you in mid-air just by looking at you? Skeletons and blood-stained torture chambers at the bottom of a well? Everything in the Shadow Temple?

Maybe it was the Mood Whiplash talking, but I remember noticing that kind of stuff more so than the Dead Hand. I didn't bother looking for screenshots of the stalchildren because even they are nothing, in my opinion, to the stuff Link encounters later in the game.

In what sense? Dead Hand's response? While Link's showing signs of struggle, it's not like his facial expressions are shown.

It's been three days since the last post in this thread, and Dead Hand is 7 points ahead of the next option. I may not agree with the crowner voters' decision, but the consensus is pretty clear...
