This isn't about how many people are needed in each side of a debate, but about the following paragraph in the trope description:

Almost every series has at least some internal conflict amongst its fanbase. In fact, a healthy series should have some polite dissent within its fanbase, as that creates a ground for respectful debate and thoughtful discussion. However, in many, if not most, cases, the amount of dissent is far above this level.

From that I get the impression that not every minor disagreement counts as a Broken Base. Every show is going to have elements that not everyone agrees with, so how big should the issue for it to count? Is people disagreeing with a character's choices or minor plot elements enough, or is it limited to more significant things, like a change in direction, popular characters being killed off, etc.?

I'm asking this because a page I watch, YMMV.Critical Role (a live Tabletop RPG), is getting a bit ridiculous with its Broken Base entries, with a mention of almost every instance there's a minor disagreement on a character's actions (with three from the last four episodes). I compared it to entries on major works with divided fanbases like Star Wars, The Dark Knight Trilogy and Game Of Thrones, and those entries seem a lot different, with disagreements over things like production choices, major changes from the source, divisive episodes, etc., not disagreements in character choices and minor elements of the plot.

I'm not up to date with that series (rather long archive they've got, and I'm only halfway through), so I won't read the pages there, but Broken Base is probably misused a lot for minor issues where there's any discussion at all.

The way I read it, the important part about the trope isn't the severity of the actual issue, but the severity of the split in the fandom. It does need to actually split the fanbase into two (or more) camps. If it's just a small part of the fandom arguing about it, it doesn't count. If a significant part of the fandom is indifferent about the issue, it doesn't count.
