So I've been reading about the fall of the Roman Republic, and here's my semi-realistic take on what could happen:

First, right-wing militas, claiming to be "providing security" and "assisting the police" start showing up at left-wing protests and begin physically intimidating people. In various locations around the country, esp in the South and West, the local police look on and do nothing.

Left-aligned protest groups begin arming their "self-protection" forces. Inevitably, there is a clash, people are shot, and the police start conducting mass arrests, almost entirely of the left-wingers.

A Republican dominated Congress passess more restrictive domestic anti-terrorism laws. A republican administration takes advantage of these laws to arrest and convict protest organizers (all leftys).

A much more militant and aggressive protest movement begins to organize itself. This new group espouses violence as "the only option left to us!" These groups are concentrated in urban areas in the Middle Atlantic and Midwestern states (New York through Pennsylvania to Illinois and Minnesota). Also the West Coast.

Covert groups begin organizing workers at retail chains and other traditionally non-union workplaces. Corporate employers being hiring private security to root these people out. More violence ensues. People die, stores are burnt down.

A national election is won by another Republican/Conservative set of candidates, including both houses of Congress and the White House. However, due to widespread allegations of voter intimidation at the polls (by the self-same militias above), the result is declared "invalid" by the new, more violent protest movement. City centers are occupied by armed groups. Local police are sent in and prove incapable of controlling the violence-the National Guard is activated in several states.

In some states (the same ones the protest movement is dominant in, see above) the National Guard units disobey federal orders and refuse to fire on protesters. The President declares martial law and attempts to send in US military units. National Guard units in those areas resist occupation by Federal forces, and violent confrontation breaks out between them. Governors in several states declare themselves as being either in support of the Federal Administration, or in opposition to it. These states consolidate their forces (National Guard, and any US Military units who elect to join it).

The Second Civil War has begun. On one side are the so-called "Revolutionaries"—mostly the Northwest, Middle Atlantic, and some of the Great Lake (Midwest), along with California, Washinton (the state) and New Mexico. On the other side, the so-called "Federalists", are nearly all the Dixie states, plus most of the Western Plains states. There are also some sizable neutrals-namely Florida, Hawaii (base of most of the US navy that didn't go over to the Federalists), and Oregon. (Hilariously, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennisssee each declare their "independence").

Foriegn powers quickly take advantage of the chaos: Russia and China both lend financial aid to the Federal side. The European Union supports the Revolutionaries. Foriegn military "advisors" begin to appear on both sides. Small territories that include port facilities are lent to these different countries, with the result that certain sections of the US are cordoned off to US citizens, Guantanamo style.

Virginia is a battleground: The cities are Revolutionary, and countryside Federalist. Military units are divided into both camps, and the state is devastated.

Who will win? Hard to say, but the Constitution is unlikely to survive.

That sounds rather like the Weimar Republic mixed in with Red October over the fall of the Roman Republic.

Although for my part, I imagined the country rather peaceably note  transforming into something like the Holy Roman Empire in my crisis scenarios.
Theoretically still there, but a collection of estates more so than a polity capable of meaningful, collective action.

[up][up] Interesting stuff, and I could see it happening, but one small quibble: "Minnesota Nice" is strong enough that we'd try to avoid a local war at all costs. Plus, even the Republicans here are liberal! (in the GOP primaries we voted for Marco Rubio over both Trump and Cruz)

No, if anything, Minnesotans would go on a "liberal crusade" — the DFL (our version of the Democratic Party) has been saying all year that "We have to win the governorship or Minnesota will turn into Wisconsin!" which, through Gerrymandering, has been suck in a Republican stranglehold despite being a healthy mix of liberal and conservative.

I totally forgot about this thread! What I wrote here was hilarious, esp. in hindsight.

As for bringing this up to date, my last substantive post still works, just make the protest group right-wing and the government leftist. Once you reverse the roles, it all works out.
