I guess I'm just more cynical. I expected the Oscars to give out some "lesser" awards to placate the OSW people and still wind up giving La La Land everything.

Also I'd say my position was equally cynical.
"They'll toss the award to whichever movie'll make them seem most progressive. "
Look, either Chuck Tingle wrote, edited, and published a short story in about 10 hours... or he knew.
(NSFW warning. Sort of)

Chill. There's no need to be rude about it. They just said they were surprised the movie didn't win.
Anytime black people achieve anything, a segment of dumbasses are gonna claim it was only due to race.

How am I being a douche ?
How is La La Land less of an Oscar bait film than anything else that was nominated? It's basically a love-letter to the entertainment industry.
I can't help but remember the Honest Trailer snippet for Moonlight.
"This young(ding), black(ding), gay man(ding) struggles to escape from poverty(ding) and drug addiction(ding) told over three decades(ding) based on a play(ding) based on the life of its author(ding). So, yeah, it's nominated for an Oscar. All The Oscar Things."
Jason has come back to kill for Mommy. You were being aggressive and confrontational for no reason. There's no need to respond with a snarky-ass "I guess you were wrong then" unless you're trying to rub it in and be a jerk about it.
I found it funny but somewhat puzzling since the Oscars have a very mixed history on black films (hell we just had a huge controversy last year about overlooking black-led movies) so I'm not sure how it having an all-black cast means the Oscars are gonna automatically eat it up.

It's baity in a different way .
Oscar bait typically means to people something somber and/or socially relevant .
So a movie that's upbeat and optimistic doesn't seem like bait to them.
You're overreacting.

If you weren't trying to be snarky or rude to them there was no reason to respond that way.

And you're being overly confrontational. And implying Moonlight only won because it was black. Which is pretty rude as well.
Truth is, this year was basically untested waters. We've never seen them react to anything like OSW. So we've got people on both sides thinking "oh, they'll give black people lip service and go back to business as usual" and people saying "they'll pander to black movies" and it's basically a 50-50 shot which they'll go for.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.@Weirdguy: Thing is, it's not "Black people pull themselves out of the gutter" movies the Oscars tend to like.
It's "White people pull black people out of the gutter" movies.
I'm not saying that. I legit think it's better than La La Land. Hell I actively thought it was overrated.
I'm just saying that i think the Academy made the right decision for the wrong reasons.
Suicide Squad winning any kind of award that's not a Razzie leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
See, that's cool. But you're being so snarky that you're coming across differently.
I do think you're right; Moonlight won because it was the best movie, but it had the chance to win because of backlash from OSW and politics. If they weren't dealing with the minefield of the situation they're in, they'd go with La La Land anytime. If we had the same movies in Oscars 2016, LLL would have deffo taken it.
Agreed. It wasn't even bad enough to be entertaining, it was just pretty solidly just south of mediocre. And again, Killer Croc looked terrible to me during the entire movie so best makeup seems... not good.

A movie is a lot of artists, the ones who do a great job shouldn't be overlooked even if you don't like the final product.

I mean Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was nominated for sound mixing once. Quality of script/directing/acting doesn't really factor in for the technical awards, it's recognizing specific craftspeople.
I know a few people who clocked "by the end of the awards season people are going to be sick and tired of hearing about La La Land," it's entirely possible it's not just about OSW. And black directors are still being shut out; neither Barry Jenkins or Steve Mc Queen a few years ago won for their Best Picture winning films, and Ava Du Vernay wasn't even nominated for Selma.
Anyway, kudos to the selections this year; this is the first year I can remember actually wanting to see all of the Best Picture nominees.

Moonlight did get Screenplay though.
Star Trek Beyond should have won Best Makeup over Suicide Squad, tbh.
Yeah, I mean I found stuff like Killer Croc or the Jared Joker pretty well done, but it seems to have won this oscar more for lack of competition than anything (I haven't seen STB so I can't tell).
The alien girl in Beyond looked amazing.
Star Trek Beyond's makeup was better/more innovative than Suicide Squad's. Suicide Squad had one character with really good makeup/practical effects (Killer Croc) while Star Trek Beyond had several (Krall, Jaylah, etc).
Maybe they split the vo- with A Man Called Ove? Yeah, probably not. I mean, the makeup for Jaylah alone was pretty gorgeous, but I am absolutely not an expert makeup artist, so...
I also refuse to actually watch Suicide Squad. So there's that. If there was more obvious makeup, that might have swung it, the Academy has a tendency for quantity over quality (you would think that Interstellar, aka the LOUDEST score I have ever sat through, would have won a sound award, though).
Edit: been several times, but I refuse to change anything because I am petty.

"though. La La Land seemed a shoo-in. "
One year after Oscar's so White. There was no way this was winning when we had two solid Oscar bait, black lead films one of them also female lead.
Plus the indie darling about the trials of a gay black kid.
It was never winning, I've been saying that for months.
Also make up isn't voted from all the voters, it's voted on just by the make up professionals .
