idea This is a very serious issue; maybe someone should create a crowner then.

No need for a crowner, just need agreement. For what it's worth, I add my vote to flamethrower this

It's a legitimate trope, so I don't agree with just axing it.

I dont know if I agree with the name, but if what I gather from it 'a character brought on a show, was hated, then kicked off the show' seems trope worthy. if so then the trope is heavily underused.

Merge with Shoo Out the New Guy? Seems like the same trope.

A key point is that all of that is what the creators want, which isn't part of Shoo Out the New Guy.

Then why is it named "scrappy"? A Scrappy is always the opposite of that.

Also intentional or unintentional strikes me as a meh distinction considering Shoo The New Guy was The Poochie and that was completely intentional.

I say cut it. The Scrappy trope already invites a whole bunch of complaining from people not understanding the trope or misusing it. I'm not seeing how having this particular trope is worth it.

People complaining and misusing the trope is grounds for cleaning it up. It's not grounds for cutting it entirely, unless that's the last option available. Which it's not, so that exception is moot.

Breakout Character is when an Ensemble Dark Horse is promoted by the creator to a more prominent role.

This is when a Scrappy becomes less prominent or even written out entirely.

Tropes done from reacting to YMMV do exist including this one.

No, this is not about a reaction from the creators. It's about a deliberate plan from the start.

If so, then having "Scrappy" as a part of the name is bad when The Scrappy is subjective and already misused.

Name it Temporary Hate Sink or Hate And Switch if it's supposed to be objective.

I'm not opposed to a name change.

There's also the problem of the character being described as likely being someone who's mostly popular in-universe, which means it's not a requirement, despite most of the description basically reading as a somewhat generalised example. Many examples (maybe half?) describe the character as being annoying in-universe.

But reading it as it is now, it's not really all that problematic. If it hasn't been cleaned extensively, I don't think there's a major problem with complaining. A few examples, but certainly not enough to take any TRS action based on that.

"No, this is not about a reaction from the creators. It's about a deliberate plan from the start."

Eh, I think creators putting the character on the bus because people hate them is a trope too. This trope should count both.

So you want to redefine the trope to include both?

I feel like that's more in line with Author's Saving Throw.

After thinking on it. "Intentionally adds a Hate Sink character for a period of time only to get rid of themm often in a hilarious and satisfying death" might be a trope. Characters like Yuna from Gundam Seed Destiny who was crafted to be such a Hate Sink that when Dropped a Bridge on Him, millions cheered. Its like the only thing the fans agree on on that show.

That is not a Scrappy though as that is completely unintentional, thus needs a rename at minimum. But Hate Sink already exists and is this trope already, but without time limits.

IMO cut it and merge what little is left with Hate Sink.

I haven't even contributed to this page, but I feel like it's unnecessary. We already have The Scrappy, ad I feel like Temporary Scrappy is just a duplicate. I agree with the others saying cut it.

Reading the description, this trope feels like a specific type of plot rather than a character.

Essentially, a generic example:

  • Alice, Bob, Carol is a team
  • Dennis joins the team. He has the same abilities as Bob, but better.
  • Alice and Carol love him, but Bob is bitter that he's essentially been replaced.
  • However, it turned out Dennis is evil/incompetent/whatever.
  • Bob stopped him and saved the day.
  • The original team is back again.

The current name singles out only Dennis. It's also a terrible name that invites misuse. IMO we should rename this to Evil Replacement Plot or something, and shift the focus from the character to the plot.

[up]Exactly. It's a deliberate choice from the start, from the introductions to the reactions and the exit.

For those of you saying it should be cut, have you actually read the trope description and understand what it's about? Saying it's "like The Scrappy" is misunderstanding what it is, and I don't think we should judge tropes based on misinformation.

For those of you saying it's complaining, can you please point out the complaining instead of just claiming there is complaining?

And while I'm not personally opposed to a name change, is there evidence of misuse because the name is unclear? Personal opinions about the name don't count.

If there's gonna be an Evil Newbie Plot trope, better take it to TLP.

Again, this trope can also count characters that are removed because they are hated.

No, that's not what the trope is. The description includes lines like, "on purpose", and "this is never intended to be a permanent addition to the cast".

Someone who's written out because she's become The Scrappy is not this trope.

The trope isn't about someone who's necessarily evil, just antagonistic in some way.

Yeah I agree with the 'on purpose' thing here, that's not really what the examples or title support though.

I would support a rename and cleanup if someone is willing to put the huge amount of effort into that. ReYKTTWing is also an option to start fresh.

I have no idea what the trope could be named though, Intentional Temporary Hate Sink Character?
