Before we get rolling on the next map, I have a couple rule announcements to make: First, I'm redefining the action categories slightly to make it more clear what actions you can do and still get to attack.

  • Move Action: Move up to your maximum movement total as allowed by the terrain. Moving does not end your turn.
    • Difficult Terrain: Some terrain, such as forests and shallow water, is more difficult to move across. Entering a space of difficult terrain uses 2 movement instead of 1 (3 for characters with the Mounted feat), and cannot be entered if the character doesn't have at least 2 movement left. Certain feats can negate these penalties for certain types of difficult terrain.
    • Impassable Terrain: Some terrain, such as mountains or deep water, are entirely impassable unless the character has a feat that allows them to cross.
  • Main Action: Main Actions are actions that take up the majority of your character's attention or effort on their turn. Main Action commands end your turn after being taken.
    • Attack: Attack a hostile target within range of your weapon or magic.
      • Destructible Terrain: Some terrain such as dead trees or crumbling walls can be destroyed with attacks, creating new paths.
    • Counter: Prepare to counterattack the first enemy who attacks you from within your range before the beginning of your next turn (ex. A swordsfighter who Counters will not counterattack the archer who attacks her first on the enemy turn, but will counterattack the axefighter who attacks her after him). This counterattack takes place after the attacker's attacks.
    • Defend: Take a defensive stance, increasing your avoidance by 10 until the beginning of your next turn.
    • Use Item: Use an item you are carrying such as a Vulnerary, Staff, or Scroll.
  • Bonus Action: Bonus Actions are actions that your character can undertake without much effort or attention. You may take one Bonus Action on your turn. Bonus Actions can be taken while moving, and do not end your turn.
    • Trade: Give, take, or exchange items or equipment with an adjacent friendly character.
  • Special Actions: Some relics or feats may give your character access to a special command, such as the Steal command of the Thief feat. Special Actions will specify whether they require a Main or a Bonus Action to undertake.

Second, I'm taking Passenger off the feat list. That's just going to be an ability Mounted and Flying Mount characters have from now on. A character with the Mounted or Flying Mount feat can pick up an allied character without the Armored feat. The passenger character can then use their main action to dismount at their discretion. The mounted character's speed stat is halved as long as their passenger is aboard.

These new rules will be added to the OP Eventually(tm).

Few more rules updates. First, I forgot a couple action commands on the above list.

  • Bonus Action
    • Equip: Switch which weapon you are wielding. Attacking with a weapon automatically equips it.
    • Search: Inspect a house or other suspicious space you are standing on for items, people, etc.

Now, on to the meat of the update.

Counterattacking

Counterattacking is now going to be automatic, and not a player command. Counterattacks do not occur on every attack, however; they are based on speed. A unit will make a single counterattack when they are 2 points of speed faster than their attacker, and make two counterattacks if they are 4 points of speed faster.

"Counterattack" has therefore been removed from the list of player commands, and replaced with "Prepare Attack." Prepare Attack allows you to make an attack during the enemy's phase when an enemy unit enters a space you designate. You can designate multiple spaces, but only make your attack against the first enemy to meet your requirements. You can designate any space(s) within your attack range. If the enemy makes an attack from the space you designated, their attack goes first.

Enemy units are now also capable of counterattacking along these rules.

Acirema's Shield is also changing to reflect these changes. Instead of a chance to counter, the Shield now adds the bearer's Skill to their Avoidance.

My original reason for removing counterattacks from the game, and then only implementing them for players and as an action command, was because of the risk of death they presented if a PC countered too many enemies and opened themselves up to too many attacks as a result. With the changes to the death rules, however, this concern is lessened due to the two "grace" deaths each character is allowed per map.

Weapon Weight

Weapon weight is coming back, but in a much more simplified manner than in the games. Each weapon as a weight value somewhere between 1 and 5. This weight value is subtracted from the wielder's Speed score when they make an attack, for the purpose of determining double attacks. Weight does not affect a units speed when the target of an attack, only when making one.

Every 6 points of Strength a character has reduces the weight penalty for physical weapons by 1, and every 6 points of Magic reduces the mental weight penalty for magic tomes by 1.

I originally struck down weapon weights as being an unnecessary complication, but the last map in particular has made me realize that without them, there's no decision making process for what weapons you carry into battle except for "what's strongest" and "do I have triangle options." I'll be keeping a close eye on this change and likely tweaking it as we go.

That should cover the rules for now. The next map should be starting later today, though I'll have weapon weights added to the spreadsheets before then so you can have a look and decide on any equipment changes before then.

Since Discord is down I'll put this here.

Tojin noh. You can't do anything to the great knight. Let Eridan have that spot so he can blast him.

You do 1.5 per hit to him. Which I think will be rounded but still.

Imma relink the planning map.

.5 damage increments on Armored are rounded up.

@Nman's question in Discord: Your staff is melee-range. You cannot heal over walls.

Posting for visibility. Sutt raised a question in the Discord chat about what happens when two -reaver weapons clash. In the games, the -reavers' properties cancel each other out, but for this game, they will not. When a Lancereaver meets a Swordreaver, for example, the Swordreaver will have the triangle advantage, based on this logic:

  • A Lancereaver is a sword that is weak to axes.
  • A Swordreaver is an axe that is strong against swords.
  • Therefore, both weapons give the advantage to the Swordreaver.

Here's a suggestion for the next round.

  • Gramps to K22, Defend
  • Zeera to K21, Prepare attack for Vissan 69(Thunder tome)
  • Eridan to J22, Prepare attack for Vissan 69(Flux)
  • Kiri to J23, Prepare attack(Steel Sword)
  • Gertrude to K21, Prepare attack(Iron sword)
  • Grendan to I24, Prepare(Iron Sword) .
  • Michel to I20,
  • Tigra to J21
  • Railen to I21

Essentially what we wanna do here is drive the armored Rider into at least Eridan's range.

Here's the planning map for reference.

  • Eridan to stays still and finishes off Vissan 69
  • Gertrude to J24 attack Vissan 74(Hand Axe)
  • Tigra to J23 Attack Vissan 70
  • Railen to K24 Attack Vissan 70
  • Zeera to K21 attack Vissan 70

Again, just a suggestion.

Posting for visibility...

I'd recommend falling back to around H20 soon, since it's pretty much impossible to clear that corridor in time to prepare for (or outrun) Greham and there're too many projectiles in the area for my tastes (most notably two enemy casters).

With this in mind, Gertrude's current move is likely a death sentence, possibly even for the entire team; I'd highly recommend changing it.

Since Wryte asked for it, some new feat suggestions.

  • Barrier: Take halved magical damage, movement -1. Requires Staff or Tome proficiency
  • Quicken: 30% chance to double the number of attacks the character does, at 10% reduced accuracy after the first two.
  • Inspire: Command Skill:Increase skill activation rate by 20%
  • Spread: If the person with this feat would double an enemy they can choose to attack a different target with he second attack.
  • Shield: Halves all damage taken for one turn for all allied units in 3 spaces, immediately ends turn, requires Staff
  • Resolve: Once per battle when reduced to 0HP, survive with 1HP until the end of the enemy phase.
  • Fury: 30% chance to do 1.5x Damage to the enemy, can Crit.
  • Symbiosis: Designate one other unit, when this unit is healed the other unit is healed as while so long as they are within 10 spaces.
