Duplicate Trope: Just Trying To Help

In regards to a post made on Stop Helping Me's TRS thread.

Previously, SHM was split into Annoying Video Game Helper and Unwanted Assistance. Recently, it was brought up that the latter may be the same thing as Just Trying to Help.

I'm thinking we should merge Just Trying to Help into Unwanted Assistance, mainly due to the former being a Stock Phrase. We can keep the name around as a redirect.

Merging them seems like a good idea; they're basically two perspectives on the same event: Just Trying to Help is the unwanted helper's side of it and Unwanted Assistance is the victim's perspective. I don't think they'd really merit two separate tropes unless Just Trying to Help was awash in examples that were separate from Unwanted Assistance...except you can't really separate them, because you can't have one without the other...

...With that stream-of-consciousness out of the way...I also agree with the redirect idea. (Also, sorry for taking so long to reply.)

What's the order of operations for a merge like this? Do we first copy all the examples over (except the zero-context ones), then put Just Trying to Help on the Cut List, and after it's cut, then add a redirect to Unwanted Assistance?

Basically. I don't think you have to cut it first, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I don't think 4 people agreeing is enough to start merging.

Should we add a crowner to this to vote on it to get more attention?

So far it's pretty unanimous...then again, six datapoints don't sound like enough...

Yeah, we need a combination of at least ten votes before we can safely call.

Page is underdeveloped, uses outdated formatting, a stock phase, MERGE!

We've got 10 yes votes; should we give this another few days to see if anyone has any reasons to disagree?

Crowners only have to run for three days, not counting weekends. It's definitely been long enough, but the crowner can't close until a mod calls for one of the options.

I've moved the examples over. Some of them need a little more context, and the only one I could add context to myself to make it fit was the Batman animated series one, so I've added Unwanted Assistance to this Pages Needing Example Context page.

Is there anything about the description worth salvaging?

I see nothing worth saving. The question now is what to do with the links (68 of them).

I've now redirected the page. It has 200 inbounds, so we can't cut it.

I don't think you should remove them, just note that it's from the helper's perspective.

I've been through the links and cut any that aren't up to the new definition. I'd say were done here.
