So a friend of mine is writing a novel and asked me for some help. They're a big fan of X-men, mostly the comics but also the movies. Specifically, she likes how Mystique was handled in First Class/Days of Future Past. Her story is going to be something of an homage to X-men, in that it will focus on teens getting superpowers and being hated for those powers. She thinks it would be nice if fans of her story would start shipping her protagonist with Mystique. This is where I disagree with her. I feel that trying to force a Crossover Ship is the wrong move as you can't really control how fans will react and it might hurt the story. So my questions are:

1. Should my friend try to encourage this Crossover Ship or not? 2. If yes, what are some ways she could get fans to start shipping her protagonist with Mystique?

The same way you would with any ship: what is it about these two personalities that gets their hearts pumping around each other? Do I like these characters on their own? Do I like them better together? How does the attraction build - is it dumped on me, or are you showing me the ways they catch each other's attention, especially if it's catching it away from other people or events?

It's a romance thing, right? Just because I know who Mystique is doesn't mean your buddy can launch her into a new relationship and expect me to be fully invested. smile

And just remember: no matter how well she writes it, there'll always be fans who'll be mad she's playing with their toys. Pick your audience!
