We know of the Wachowskis through The Matrix trilogy, but what is everyone's opinion on them? Personally, I admire them for having crazy ideas, but sometimes I believe it's never good to let them have total creative control over their projects. One just have to watch two minutes of Jupiter Ascending to know that (watched it once, never finished it). However, The Matrix remains one of my favorite films ever, and I even enjoyed Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas.

Any thoughts?

I like 'em. I like all three of the Matrix movies, although the first one is my clear favorite. Speed Racer is also a fun movie for. I've never seen Cloud Atlas, so I can't comment on it's quality, but Sense8 (which is developed by both the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski) is awesome.

Speed Racer is probably my favorite movie. If WB does a New Gods movie, I'd want the Wachowskis to direct. They're fantastic directors, but their writing often leaves something to be desired.

I'm still a fan of them, and I still want them to continue making movies, as they are always trying to do something new, for better or worse. Just so long as they learn from what went wrong with JA.

Much like George Lucas, I think they have some talent, but function best when reined in.

After the success of The Matrix, the just had more freedom than I think they honestly deserved. I thought Speed Racer would be a perfect fit for them, but I just wound up hating the movie.

Mind you, I did like V For Vendetta (though that, I think, was in spite of their influence and not because of it) and genuinely enjoyed Ninja Assassin.

Oh, the Wachowskis.

I will get to this later.

I'll echo what someone else said by saying they have really amazing ideas but too much Protection from Editors. I just remember watching Jupiter Ascending and being absolutely floored by how much of this stuff should have been cut down and edited out of the movie.

It really is a lot like George Lucas where it seems like they had so much clout and good will that nobody is willing to tell them "Hey this idea is kind of dumb" when they pitch something.

Reposting from the Speed Racer thread, two critics's opposing views on them, Film Crit Hulk and Nathan Rabin.)

Hulk: THE WACHOWSKIS, PERHAPS MORE THAN ANY OTHER FILMMAKERS, SUFFER FROM THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART. THEY MAKE CINEMA THAT IS SO GENUINE AND JAW-DROPPINGLY SINCERE THAT IT CAN'T HELP BUT SKEW RIGHT INTO MOST PEOPLE'S "THIS IS CORNY" TERRITORY. IT'S LIKE THE SIBLINGS HAVE NO RADAR FOR IT. THEY MAY NOT EVEN KNOW THE MEANING OF THE WORD. AS SUCH, THEIR BIG, LOVING IDEAS COME ONTO THE SCREEN COMPLETELY UNDISTILLED BY CYNICISM.

THEY ARE ABOUT AS SUBTLE AS A JACKHAMMER. EVEN IF THEY REGULARLY CONFUSE THEIR METAPHORS, THEY ARE SO COMMITTED TO YOUTHFUL NOTIONS OF IDEALISM THAT THEIR CHARACTERS ACT AS IF THEY HOLD THE ONE TRUE WILL OF GOD IN THEIR HANDS. MEAING IT'S CHARACTERS WHO BELIEVE IN PEACE / LOVE / TRUTH AND WILL FIGHT THE WHOLE WORLD WITH KEWL KUNG FU TO PROVE HOW MUCH PEACE / LOVE / TRUTH THEY HAVE. BUT IF HULK HAD ONE CREATIVE STANDARD OF ALL FILMMAKERS, IT IS THE REQUEST THAT ONE'S CINEMA BE HONEST TO WHAT IT REALLY WANTS, WHAT IT REALLY BELIEVES, AND WHAT IT'S REALLY SAYING.

Rabin: It felt like the Wachowskis were luring audiences in with those sexy, commercial elements so that they could deliver earnest entreaties on the importance of love, connection, and embracing destiny. It's like having a conversation with a seemingly cool, relatable stranger only to realize that said stranger is trying to get you to go to the "hip" Unitarian church.

The Wachowskis are auteurs whose failures are as audacious, ambitious, heroically sincere, and achingly romantic as their extraordinary early successes. There are many questionable elements to Jupiter Ascending; the Wachowskis' conviction and belief in themselves, however, are not among them.
