I'm pretty sure only like half the Gen V Pokemon were revealed before release. Maybe less, there were 156 new Pokemon that gen. It was a big deal when the full Pokemon list came out and there were a ton of new Pokemon.
I don't really remember Gen IV. I know quite a lot of Pokemon weren't revealed before release, I don't remember about what percent it was.
I really hope there are more new Pokemon than Gen VI. Also, I believe that the horse pokemanz will get a Ground/Fighting evolution
I don't remember gen 4 that well, but this seems to match up with how many were revealed with Gen 5, possibly 6 if you count the Megas.
Oh I'm sure there'll be a lot more Pokemon. They've been working two years on this game it seems, plus there's a lot of evolutions we haven't seen, Mega Evolutions if you want to count those, and that's not even getting into legendaries.

These are the previous generations and how many of the new Pokemon were revealed before game release of their generation.
3rd Gen: 37 out of 135 new Pokemon (27%)
4th Gen: 30 out of 107 new Pokemon (28%)
5th Gen: 52 out of 156 new Pokemon (33.3%)
6th Gen: 42(56) out of 72(86) new Pokemon (including megaevolutions) (58% / 65%)
7th Gen: 25 out of ??? new Pokemon (so far)
edit: Percentages added.

My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes! So we're potentially halfway to the amount of Pokemon we'll have revealed before the release date.
The second stage starters are guaranteed, at least.
The main reason people are so worried is likely because gen 6 had so few new Pokemon.
I don't quite remember, but I'm pretty sure Gen VI was the only one I was actively participating in anticipation for, so that letdown is the only frame of reference I have to go off of. So yeah, it makes me nervous. X left me with exactly one pleasant surprise to discover on my own in-game. Granted, discovering Helioptile in the Corocoro leak was an amazing experience, too, but still.
I mainly feel as if the reason why was because GF spent most of their time programming for the 3DS. Hence why X and Y have more old pokemon than new, and why Sun/Moon look like a HUGE Graphical leap over them.
Warrior to the very end! My tumblr, dood!XY, with 3d models and megas was quite a jump. I'm expecting more new pokemon this gen than in G6.
Although I do wonder; will we ever reach a point where it is deemed that there are "enough" pokemon? This gen will probably put us at 800 and something, so two or three gens down the line and we might be at a thousand.
They can always compensate for new Pokemon by giving old ones new forms. If any of those rumors on Reddit are true, that might be what they're going for. I kinda miss when they gave a bunch of old moms new evos in gen 4.
I honestly think it wouldn't hurt going forward to just do that for a Generation - just a sort of catch up Gen for the weaker and forgotten mons with only a small handful of new ones.
"old moms"
Crazy random thought;
What if someone cosplayed Mimikyu? How would that go?
Honestly, I feel like the last thing Pokemon needs right now are new Pokemon. It's pretty hard to "Catch 'em all!" when there's 722 of them (and counting) and most of those 722 aren't worth using. I'd rather they add new mechanics that mix up the game.
Like maybe instead of having each gym be type-based, they could base gyms around certain strategies. Like, "This gym alternates between rain and sun and has Pokemon that complements one or the other" or "This gym is dedicated to annoying status conditions. Have fun!". It might encourage players to use more than the 6-8 Pokemon they've been carrying with them since near the beginning of the game.
Maybe they could even incorporate Pokemon Go's pokeball system, where you have to aim them. It would keep you from switching entirely to better and more expensive pokeballs. You better be very careful with that Master ball, otherwise it'll roll off and become useless forever.
I can't think of many fully evolved Pokemon that aren't usable in-game. Besides, 721 is peanuts compared to how many different species of animal exist in Real Life. I'd hope Pokemon doesn't stop until there's at least 1,000 mons.

Honestly, part of the fun of each new generation is seeing new Pokemon and collecting them as the journey goes on.
And this generation is adding many more Pokemon that bring something new to the table, so I think that's good.
Honestly, I'd be fine with Pokemon going up to 3,000, with half of the fully evolved ones having some super form or another, though more than 3,000 might be a bit much for me.
1000 seems like a good number. More than 1500 would be overwhelming.
New Pokemon is the lifeblood of the series. We'll only stop getting new Pokemon when the series is finished.
I love that Pokemon keeps adding more Pokemon because in doing so they have to get more creative with what species and mythological creatures they make into Pokemon. Biodiversity is the fact of the real world, and even if only 10% of them are interesting enough to justify being Pokemon, that's still enough animals and plants to last 100 years of Pokemon.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Yeah.
I'm still waiting for a platypus Pokemon.
uh.

As far as I remember, about all of them. Which is why I'm being careful about spoilers. In fact, I usually don't even read this thread anymore, even though I keep clicking on it out of habit.
Surprise page-topper.
