International trailer.
Father, huh...?
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.Yep! It all comes back to fathers in the Star Wars franchise. :D

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.*squints eyes* I...can't read that.

I have to admit, while I am liking the visual style of the film the one thing that throws me off is the lead actress. Not so much the performance but that when she is surrounded by a lot of grungy, dirty, scarred people and she is supposed to be equally as "rough and tumble" the flawless make-up and hair makes it hard to take her character seriously.
It's a common problem almost any time you hire really attractive actresses to play these tough characters. It doesn't help either when they are directed to either look grim or grit their teeth. The best female action characters have a personality beyond that and end up dirty and sweaty from rolling around in the dirt, or trash compactor, instead of at most getting a (still somewhat glamorous looking) scratch on their face. Rey suffered from the same problem just a little bit, but she at least had a personality that wasn't just looking grim and tough.
I hope the movie ends with Darth Vader slaughtering all the rebels, with some form of hope spot as the information is transferred to Leia. I'll be disappointed if we don't see him demonstrate his skill at killing things.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleExcept for Captain Andor, whose mustache will tear Vader apart.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@KJ Mackley: There's dirt and soot on her face in a couple of shots.
I will say that I hope getting the signal out to Leia isn't the only bright spot of the final battle, mostly because while you could certainly interpret that the second thing is the first, A New Hope does say that the battle will be the first victory against the Empire, and that during the battle Rebel spies will manage to steal the plans to the Death Star.
^^ It was a perfectly placed "glamorous" dirt (the only thing I could see saw was the distant shot of her limping across the platform) and not her actually looking like hell. It might not be an issue at all in the actual movie, but it is an impression I'm getting from the trailer.
Everything being ultra-glossy and beauty going untouched (to a somewhat absurd degree, I realize this is not new) is just part and parcel of Hollywood moviemaking these days. Hopefully it's a phase and we'll get back to a grittier look eventually, but I can't say it surprises me.

If it was any other franchise it wouldn't bother me as much, but Star Wars is well known for both the Used Future grime and really interesting looking characters. So the trailer tried hyping her up as this resourceful, rebellious badass and all we see is an attractive woman with a medium length haircut and standard Outer Rim human wear (tunic, jacket, asymmetrical belt). The fact she is surrounded by more colorful characters in both personality and appearance highlights that discrepancy.
Of course, we have a shot of her in Imperial clothing Dressing as the Enemy so maybe that bland, neutral look is intentional.
It's definitely a subjective thing but I do see where you are coming from and I kind of sense something similar, which is part of what makes the trailer feel slightly "off".
That being said, we now know that Jyn is the daughter of this (in)famous scientist who is a person of importance. So while it doesn't account for her potentially being "untarnished" throughout the film, it gives me a different picture of her than initially presented. She's not a hardened street rat, which is why she doesn't look like one. She's more like a rebellious rich kid or more charitably, a Defector from Decadence. And her crimes are like theft and forgery, although she's presented as being able to handle herself in a fight. Come to think of it, Han Solo is probably not a bad comparison.

Jesus, I can't stop seeing this film's title without thinking of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Synopsis for Rogue One Catalyst. Surprise, it takes place during the Clone Wars.
War is tearing the galaxy apart. For years the Republic and the Separatists have battled across the stars, each building more and more deadly technology in an attempt to win the war. As a member of Chancellor Palpatine’s top secret Death Star project, Orson Krennic is determined to develop a superweapon before their enemies can. And an old friend of Krennic’s, the brilliant scientist Galen Erso, could be the key.
Galen’s energy-focused research has captured the attention of both Krennic and his foes, making the scientist a crucial pawn in the galactic conflict. But after Krennic rescues Galen, his wife, Lyra, and their young daughter, Jyn, from Separatist kidnappers, the Erso family is deeply in Krennic’s debt. Krennic then offers Galen an extraordinary opportunity: to continue his scientific studies with every resource put utterly at his disposal. While Galen and Lyra believe that his energy research will be used purely in altruistic ways, Krennic has other plans that will finally make the Death Star a reality. Trapped in their benefactor’s tightening grasp, the Ersos must untangle Krennic’s web of deception to save themselves and the galaxy itself.

Wasn't the Death Star established in Ao TC to be a Geonosian Separatist project?
Dooku took the plans from them, but I'm not sure it was ever stated who started building it and when.
Oh God! Natural light!True. Plus it was apparently just some kind of big battlestation, I guess, but I have no idea if they actually intended to make it a superlaser thing or not.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.The old EU had about 5 different origins of the design before Episode II firmly stated at least the idea was Geonosian. It was reconciled by explaining that different groups developed different parts. Which makes perfect sense, because you don't have one team designing an entire city and the plans are changing all through construction anyway.
