Hi, sorry if this has been brought up before and/or is in the wrong section.

Is there any chance of TvTropes getting an SSL certificate anytime soon? There have been some amazing improvements made to this site in recent months and I feel this would be a relatively simple yet monumental cherry on top. It's even possible to get a self-signed certificate for free if that's an issue.

Please consider upgrading TvTropes to HTTPS.

This too shall pass.

As much as I like that idea, the question is how much more would it cost to do so?

An SSL certificate can cost as little as 10$, and a self-signed one is free, though I'm uncertain as to how that works.

RapidSSL says that a single domain is 50$/year to secure. With unlimited subdomains is 200/year.

100/year from InstantSSL, climbing higher than 400 for some deals.

150/year from Thawte, though again prices are variable depending on your needs.

If I had to guess, I'd say an extra 2-400 dollars a year. Over 12 months, that's ~17-~34 dollars per month extra. I cannot claim to be an authority on TvTrope's cash flow, but that sounds doable.

Closing because it's already been asked in the Tech Wishlist, and this would be the wrong forum anyway.
