So this movie was announced a while back and doesn't have a thread yet, but I figured I might as well make one because something... interesting happened very recently.

Truth be told I was pretty excited for this as I really liked Paper Towns and Fault in Our Stars, book and film versions, as well as the Looking for Alaska book itself, and it was said that this movie was going to be handled by the same team that did those.

Well apparently they lied and drama has commenced. Seems John Green actually sold the rights to Paramount right after he wrote the book, and he's been trying to buy them back and sell them to Fox to no avail. Not only that, he's been locked completely out of the loop creative control-wise; he says they haven't returned his calls for months and he has a very bad feeling about the film. A group of fans on Twitter has encouraged a boycott.

This has, understandably, made people cynical.

The film is, as far as anyone can tell, still slated for a 2017 release. I for one hope it comes out and I hope it's beautiful, but until then it'll be fun to watch the mud fly, I guess.

Wow.

I feel bad for John Green. I'm not a fan of his as much as I used to, but this seems like a shitty situation all around.

Oh, and if they want to keep this PG-13 like the other two I can definitely think of one infamous scene that likely won't be in this...

Ah yes, the blowjob scene.

Completely forgot about that until just now.

Green has confirmed it was actually intended as Fan Disservice to show they didn't really care for each other, just used one another for a quickie, but even so.

Poking around tumblr it seems two things fans are concerned Paramount will do (apart from just not releasing the film) are paring it down to "just" a love story and adding a clear villain, likely Jake. I honestly don't care about what they do with Jake as I don't find him sympathetic at all, but if they simplify the plot... yeah, that would atomically suck.

So, sorry for the triple post but yesterday the Green-Paramount feud blew up even further.

Green announced in a vlog entry that Paramount finally got back to him after five months and confirmed what he had feared: they've been deliberately avoiding him, and they apparently flat-out told him they don't want him involved in the production. So Green decided right then and there what his next novel will be: a sequel to the original book, Looking For Alaska.

Green, ever the good sport, discouraged the fan boycott and expressed his hope that the film will succeed despite his non-involvement, but hopes that his literary sequel, which he plans to release around the same time as the movie, will manage to steal at least some of its thunder. grin

All Green has revealed about the new book is that its working title is Alaska Discovered and it focuses on the further adventures of Miles and Alaska. Yes, Miles and Alaska. Oh boy, I can't wait to hear this one explained.

No, really, I can't.

The clip is here. I have to doff my hat to Green, he's taking this whole mess much better than many would.
