It was around five years ago, the events of the day were astonishingly mundane, a slow summer day in the midst of July. Students were in summer vacation.

For two of these students, youngsters really, one twelve the other eleven...it was just another lazy day, which they spent playing their favourite card game.

Yugioh has had a number of anime, and while they've caught up with most of them, being young, they do not exactly get the mechanics of everything recently released.

One of them detects a rather odd heat wave coming over them, and spaces out. He hears people talking around him, discussing, debating. He tries to keep playing despite the profoundly eerie sensation surrounding him.

He goes for Number 32: Shark Drake.

The card, previously just simple cardboard, releases a tremendous and brilliant light, three blue lights flying into a large void in the ceiling, followed by a burst of energy as the tremendous form destroys the fragile house around them.

The boys are horrified - what have they done?

Not truly understanding what was about to be done, the summoner of Number 32 commands an attack. The Number crushes his friend's monster which is suddenly likewise summoned, the scene of the destruction ravaged and numerous pieces of shrapnel laying about.

His foe's life points have dropped to 0.

His body matches this condition, badly beaten and bruised by the explosion, one arm laying broken.

The "victor" screamed and saw the Gods themselves. A great radiance, a cunning brilliance, a savage pulsation.

Nowadays, five years later, whatever happened that day resulted in a mundane card game becoming an actual, literal struggle to survive in each "game".

Some attributed it to the trickery of higher order beings, and others said it was the wrath of God, punishing the young for taking a card game so seriously.

Still others claim to have seen strange individuals, crystalline constructs far away from civilization beckoning the unwary to their side.

Whatever the case, what is obvious by now is that each and every card carries within it some form of spell or power. Whatever monster is summoned is actually, physically summoned forth.

For this reason, actual Duel Disks have been invented and outfitted with power refiners, to make sure that the power within the cards are focused and not released haphazardly and potentially dangerously.

For whatever reason, when a card is destroyed, it is still ultimately subject to dissipation or some form of shattering or explosion.

The Radiance Church: A group of individuals who live out on a man made structure floating out at sea, their city of Ark isolated from most other nations. Next to no one knows what goes on in Ark, except that the Radiance Church has strange practices and are stringent about allowing their membership back on the mainland.

They also have a strange and marked reverence for the rumoured "Crystals", which they call Auracite, and allege it will enable their god to take more direct action in the world.

Our Characters

Our characters are either members of a San Francisco Local High School "Yugioh Battle Club", adults associated with the club, or others so involved in the local area.

There are numerous events going on regarding San Francisco's administration, mostly, keeping in mind how real it all is now, whether or not to allow the upcoming tournament to take place nearby the city.

The Mayor, "Doctor Barth", believes that this is a good time to find skilled individuals for a certain endeavour he has in mind. While the five most influential City Councilors believe this is a potentially expensive and dangerous move, thus they are against it.

However, with the "Neo Action Field" developed for these tournaments, it is usually agreed that the activities are safe and secure as long as the combatants do not go too far.

For our heroes, however, right now they see this as a chance to make it to the big leagues and the Professional / National Tournament Circuit. Though the attention gained here will most certainly draw out just about anyone...

Essentially for this RP, think an interpretation of what would happen if the cards suddenly actually brought forth what is depicted in them. By and large, Dueling has attained a reputation as a potentially highly dangerous sport due to some incidents that happened during the early years.

In terms of what to expect, it will have a feeling like 5D's at times, and with some mythology and figures inspired by Final Fantasy XIII's long story, with some flavor from Shin Megami Tensei.

If you have anything you'd like to ask or add, comment and let me know.

Are anime-only cards allowed?

I've never done a TVTropes RP before, but this looks super awesome! So does this take place in the "real world" or a Yu-Gi-Oh world where the anime/manga was a thing?

[up][up][up] Yes, but mostly as "boons" from the mentioned Crystals. You can make a character who has an Oath with one of these Crystals. Though these Oaths have their own downsides.

[up] It will be taking place in a world a lot like ours. At least, the said world was a lot like ours five years ago.

Now I'm imagining all Yu-Gi-Oh VA scripted duels being canceled because of the cards coming to life XD What a surreal experience that would be!

Could we add in a subplot in which Congress is debating on a bill that could actually ban Yu-Gi-Oh! for good? If not, I understand.

This reminds me of these "If Shadow Games Were Real, would you play them?" and "What cards would make Action Duels really awkward?" threads.

Of course, if they tried to ban Yu-Gi-Oh it would be a matter of confiscating the cards which can be summoned into reality. A better option might be to go the GX route and have duel academies.

I wonder what would happen if you used a card like Umi or Change of Heart in real life. o.o

[up][up] There will be such a subplot, and it'll start surprisingly, and end surprisingly.

[up] There are a list of cards frowned upon in official tournaments, such as the direct damage spells - because those usually do a lot of unwarranted damage.

Oh! Uh, can you summon cards outside of duels or is it duels only?

Oh yes, you can do that.

Its very frowned upon, but usual rules apply - a monster with higher attack will trump a monster with lower attack, and you can use certain equip spells and such to make these battles more even.

Okay everyone, channel your inner Yami Bakura XD

...What happens if we use cards with characters from the manga/show on them, like Judgment of the Pharaoh or Unity? Would an image of them pop up before disappearing or would it connect the 'real' world to the Yu-Gi-Oh world briefly? Maybe that's how the whole mess got started XD

I'm game too! I don't know how XYZ, Pendulum, and any other fancy Summons work, though. I've only dueled through the video games, most of which are old-school XD

@ cards featuring characters: an image of them would appear, but there would be no connection to the Yugioh anime / manga world. As for what brought the plot on, the exact details are hidden for now, but I can say Jerkass Gods played a part.

I had a dream about something like this, but set in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh because I got trapped in a non-existent Yu-Gi-Oh GBC game.

Something was messing with the Yu-Gi-Oh world’s history and their history of games! I had to solve puzzles to set things right, but the first one, a word puzzle, was hard to solve because I couldn’t read hieroglyphics and the English I could read was gibberish. Yami Yugi said it was okay, though, and Joey gave me a puzzle that was kinda like Tetris. After a few tries I was able to solve it, restoring Capsule Monsters to the world, but then the REAL plot began.

Something was making kids’ Capsule Monster raising sim toys–they kinda looked like Tamagotchis–come to life, do battle, and in some cases, turn red and explode. I think the last one happened if you hadn’t been treating them well, but they were still bought by the truckloads. Green-haired Toei Kaiba left the matter to his news crew, but he secretly suspected Pegasus was behind it. There was a really cool effect where Pegasus’s face was half-shadowed and the part that wasn’t had him with a red eye.

As Ryou Bakura was trying to help Yugi find a solution, Yami Bakura was reveling in the chaos sweeping the world and wanted to use it to his advantage–to take control of the world! (My character described him as having a “Mad Max 2 thing” going on. I have never seen any Mad Max films.) He took over Ryou and demanded to go with us (“Yugi... That wasn’t a request!”), and the last thing I remember before abruptly waking up is the Bakuras arguing in their head over whether or not to eat a steak.

Alright, I'll have the sign ups ready shortly, as well as my own character.

Also some more information on some of the Crystals.

I would have a little question: How exactly will duels work? I mean we can't really choose which card we draw in a turn because... well yeah. So how do we do this?

I'll use a randomizer to choose hands for players within duels.

Outside duels, you can pick and choose when you want to use a certain card.
