Take Quicksilver just casually mentioning that Magneto is his father.
That was in Apocalypse. In DOFP, Quicksilver just mentions that his mom used to know a guy who could control metal with his mind, but he never makes the connection that Magneto's his dad.

First Class was a reboot. DOFP happened so they could salvage the best bits of the previous movies. It's not just First Class that gets written out.

Which I was fine with. Other than Xavier and Magneto, I thought most of First Class was pretty disposable. It kind of felt like they did too— other than the aforementioned mutant dads, and to a lesser degree Mystique and Beast, most of the actual First Class gets little in the way of spotlight or development. Even Shaw is pretty flat, let alone the rest of his minions.

I think all "group" X-Men movies are guilty of this with their large cast. Pyro or Iceman were in X2, and were mostly ignored. The main problem as I see it is that a few characters stole the show, making it extremely hard for the secondary faces to truly shine. You have the "big four" of Magneto, Xavier, Wolverine and Mystique, some that manage to appear fleshed out whenever they are here (Kitty, Jean, Storm, Beast), and a revolving cast to make both sides look more numerous.

[up][up]Was it? I think it was sort of a half-hearted attempt at a reboot and prequel. The fact that the actual "first class" of X-Men also consisted of largely different characters than the team from the original movies always seemed to me like it was their attempt to connect both eras. And of course, the opening scene with Magneto was a recreation of the opening of the original X-Men movie.

[up]Yeah it's been a big problem. Days of Future Past probably had it worst of all (despite me generally liking that movie) since they dumped a whole bunch of new X-Men like Bishop and Blink on top of the returning cast members, many of whom were already underdeveloped.

Speaking of which, sounds like we are getting Sunfire and Dazzler.

I'd say First Class was a soft reboot and DOFP is a hard unreboot, to coin a phrase.

The survivors in the bad future aren't given the continuous focus of the titular First Class, so they're less egregious. Rather, DOFP's decoy team are given enough sympathetic qualities that we might care if they die, but they're there to die, no question. Their position as mostly new faces who barely get names makes them Easter Egg Red Shirts. I don't think that's what they were going for in FC.

I remembered the "secondaries" from FC mostly because of the egregious Black Dude Dies First, made even worse by the fact that the black dude actually had the survival and adaptation power.

6 years later and I'm still happy whenever I see someone say how bullshit that was. That was absurdly tone deaf, especially when the director said he set the movie in the 60's because he wanted to parallel the Civil Rights Movement.

That really soured me on the movie. Darwin has an awesome power and iirc he was one of the last recruits. Along with Angel defecting (and where's Beak, you bastards?) to no noticeable effect, it just seems pointless to have even introduced them. The Class itself just seems kind of slapped on.

Iceman and Pryo were far from ignored in X2. Remember the "coming out" scene?

That was in Apocalypse. In DOFP, Quicksilver just mentions that his mom used to know a guy who could control metal with his mind, but he never makes the connection that Magneto's his dad.

Does it really matter in which movie he says it? The fact remains that he said it and now we just suddenly get thrown in his personal conflict about telling Magneto he's his son. I mean, the movie doesn't give us a reason as to why we should care he's his son, nor previous development of that reveal. It just... kinda happens.

You were using a scene from Apocalypse to criticize Days of Future Past. This post, right here. I'm defending DOFP, but I have no beef with the argument that the X-Men film series as a whole is slapdash and inconsistent.

So, yes, what movie that scene happened in matters.

Well, ok sure. I'm just saying that it is an example of just how godawfully rushed and irrelevant are the plotpoints in these movies. Probably should've used the "yeah my mom knew this guy who could control metal" line to explain my point, though.

Word on the street is that the movie opens up with the Shi'ar landing at the mansion during a baseball game.

While the Marvel Cinematic gears up for a giant cosmic bonanza in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, Fox is taking a different approach with its X-Men franchise. According to director Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix — the latest installment in the X-Men saga — will be “grounded.”

In the latest issue of Total Film, as captured by X-Men Films.com, Kinberg said that he must “find a way to ground it so it’s not too intergalactic,” stressing that the X-Men films are “human…and emotional.” In that sense, Kingberg could mean that he hopes to keep the film emotionally grounded, but that is unclear at this time.

Can't wait to see how hard this train wrecks.

[up]Wasn't this the arc in the cartoon where they met a race of aliens including a Superman Expy and one of Xavier's more notable love interests?

Grounded?

I for one have always thought that the Phoenix Saga would be best served by reframing it in the context of a Pleasantville-esque small town dramedy, sort of like a staging of Shakespeare in the Park where everyone dresses in businesswear.

I'm mean my main criticism of the previous two X-men films was that they aren't grounded enough.

It's gonna flop hard. The biggest issue with Apocalypse to me was that Singer had plain run out of everything he could squeeze out of the franchise with Days of Future Past, and he was on autopilot mode. Some scenes were good, don't get me wrong, and some were bad, but overall he had just lost anything he could get from it. But Kinberg, the producer of these movies, stepping into the director's seat leaves me with so much worry that it's gonna be an executive meddling riddled pile of crap.

They meet aliens that are full on Expies of the Legion of Superheroes. You can't use this to make fun of the DCEU at the very least?
