The above titled biopic of the original gangster rap group, "N.W.A" has opened at the American box office with a three day total of $56.1 million dollars.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/08/16/media/straight-outta-compton-box-office/index.html

There is a lot of controversy about the movie, with some saying it glosses over the bad treatment of women by members of the group, and cinemas showing it having to have new security measures funded by Universal Studios, its producer, to stop gang bangers shooting up the place.

Is the film worth the hype? And given that since I'm probably the whitest hip-hop fan out there, I probably shouldn't ask this, but does it live up to the group it's based around?

Sorry to answer a question with a question but why were people so worried about people being violent about a movie. It wasn't on religion or anything. Did N.W.A. album releases ever lead to spikes in retail store violence?

Speaking of which, here's his review of the lead single and the movie.

I'm interested in the movie, but I'm discouraged from seeing it because I've seen some incredibly disgusting stuff about their casting calls for women, namely, this:

http://gawker.com/straight-outta-compton-casting-call-is-racist-as-hell-1606524197

Short version: they rank all the female characters as "A" (gorgeous) to "D", with the B ones being "light-skinned African-American", the C ones being "medium to light skinned" and the D ones being "medium to dark skin tone".

Black people being racist to other black people: because there's just not enough racism in the world. *sigh*

Well shit.

I really wanted to see the movie, but that's... yeah, no thanks.

The casting call is messed up but that shouldn't dissuade you from seeing it. It really was a great movie!

Honestly this is similar to The Warriors controversy back in the 70s when that film was released.

@Tuckercreators

What Ice Cube said: "I wanna kill cops sometimes because it's so unfair how a police officer can abuse his authority and get away and get away with it just because he has a badge!"

What the panickers heard: "I wanna kill cops sometimes [NWA WANTS TO KILL COPS FOR NO REASON!!]"

With that explanation and given all the surge of controversy related to police brutality and most people's opinions of cops in general, I can see how that line could get some nutjob to use that excuse from the movie to just randomly shoot up a police department. Not saying it will happen, but it could potentially happen. I am also not saying or thinking this movie should be banned/censored because of such influencing line.

Despite some flaws, this was a really good movie. I'm also happy it did so well at the box office.

I'm also happy that CNN dug itself into a racist hole by being surprised that there was no violence regarding this movie during it's opening weekend.

They had the gall to be shocked when there was no violence when they were pretty much the only people saying there was gonna be violence to begin with.

Just finished seeing this at my local multiplex and I thought it was great. The casting throughout was spot on, and I totally bought into the illusion that I was actually watching a NWA concert when those scenes kicked in.

Yeah, it's not the whole story of the group - we're not going to get that until the members in it are all gone, but it is a damned good start.

You know, I hate rap music, and I wouldn't go see "Straight Outta Compton" to win a bet...but man, the thread activity on this forum is a really fascinating reflection on membership demographics. This movie made $150 million and led the box office for several weeks, and mine is the 14th post. There's a 500-odd post thread above this on "Differences between Marvel and DC".

Yeah, weird that. Mind you, making generalities about demographics here could be a bit tricky, given all the different stuff folks here tend to like all rattling around inside the one skull per forum user.

Film's only been out in two, count them TWO countries so far - the States and the United Kingdom. And already made nearly eight times its budget. Any other kind of film with those kinds of numbers there'd be a solid lock on a sequel but that's not going to happen unless the one they're talking about doing about Death Row Records and Aftermath comes out to be filmable, what with Suge Knight finally rotting in jail where he belongs. Plus Universal's has no plans to do one.

Uh, it's been out in The Netherlands for more than a week, though our grosses don't exactly make up most of the box office.

[up][up]Oh, they'll make a sequel of some kind. Or an unofficial sequel biopic of a different rapper. I guess we should be glad that anything that isn't a comic book movie can actually do well.

[up][up]It's out in Holland? Weird. That didn't show up in Box Office Mojo last time I checked the figures.

I think there's something of a glitch in Box Office Mojo's system, since if IMDB is correct, it's been released in quite a lot of countries.

That does seem to be the case, since BOM also doesn't register films like Knock Knock, Trainwreck and Hitman: Agent 47 as being out in the Netherlands, while they all are.
