Did you just call a quesadilla a cheese sandwich?

They're really different. A quesadilla is a tortilla with cheese and meat, it isn't a sandwich.

Here's something else fun, for you non-Mexicans: burritos are a northern thing. They're not ubiquitous like tacos, tortas, and quesadillas. Try finding a burrito place in Mexico City—they're fairly rare.

Oh, and for the person who asked what I think of Coco so far: it looks all right. It's not really blowing me away, but that's probably because I've already been spoiled on The Book of Life.

It's not at all uncommon for minor cultural holidays to become more important in the States; sometimes they're aggrandized by minority communities as a way of asserting identity, sometimes they're aggrandized by others in an attempt to honor said minority community, or to be inclusive. I've heard the same thing said about Hanukkah, that's it's a fairly minor Jewish holiday that has been aggrandized in the US because of it's proximity to Christmas. I had a Jewish friend who told me that he felt the holiday almost seemed more important to non-Jews, as an attempt to include Jewish folks in the "Holiday Season."

Lots of cultures have grave-tending days, mostly unofficial as far as I know. In some parts of the US it's frequently done on Memorial Day, for instance. The Day of the Dead has an iconography all it's own, of course.

You know, I'm not an anthropologist but I'm going to theorize that Dia de los Muertos caught on so well in large part due to the fact that all of its iconography just looks awesome.

Central American indigenous stuff is ridiculously badass-looking in general. Take the Aztec gods, for instance. Most mythic pantheons have some kind of bearded guy at the top; they have a giant flying snake with rainbow wings (that created the world with blood from his penis).

[up][up] Now that is something I definitely didn't know. I thought Hanukkah was a genuinely big deal for Jewish people.

Tortilla is a type of bread- put anything between bread and you have a sandwich. Ergo, a quesadilla is a cheese sandwich, but with tortilla bread

Eh, they keep reinventing fast food. The other day Burger King (I believe?) had a Burger-with-taco-chips-inside special offer. I was all, "Wha...?" I tried it anyway, and it was actually good.

New to this thread, so my apologies if anyone already brought this up, but is the dog's name being Dante a Shout-Out to The Divine Comedy?

(I know the land of dead and hell are two different things, but both stories involve a dude traveling to the afterlife.)

[up]Probably. It's one of the most common afterlife allusions to make. Heck, I was able to guess the spoilery twist of a certain animated series in the second episode because a character had a Divine Comedy name.

You know I have been forming a h/c that melds both the Book Of Life and Coco together. I actually like to think that Miguel is Manolo and Maria's descendant through his mother. I mean his family side dislikes music, so it would have to course come from his mother's side. I mean both depictions of the afterlife are different, but this just pure plot potential. I could see Manolo actually encouraging Miguel to follow his dreams like he did instead of adhering to his family's strict traditions.

Does anyone know if this takes place is in the modern day? The main character wears a hoodie and jeans, but otherwise it could take place a few decades ago.

Just heard about this movie. I look forward to it.

And wow, there are people who complain that this movie shouldn't exist because of The Book of Life? What, does that movie own Dia de Muertos or something?

Jesus, I loved that movie (watched it twice and owns a BD) but this is petty and juvenile.

Thay said, attempt to copyright "Day of the Dead", that's fucking despicable. I bet it's from the same department/person who had the bright idea to try copyright "SEAL Team Six".

Ya know, I'm just gonna be blunt: can't us Mexican-Americans have two movies about El Dia de los Muertos? We get enough movies about Christmas and Halloween and shit, just let us have some movies about our holidays and our culture.

At least this one looks like it'll explore the world of the dead in more detail than The Book of Life did.

And the casting is more dedicated to getting Latino actors than The Book of Life, to be honest.

Most of all it doesn't focus on a romantic subplot, and it's more about the family. I still would actually see a cross over between Coco and the Book Of Life on friendly terms with Manolo being an ancestor of Miguel.

@Adric De Psycho Could we also get a Cinco de Mayo movie or two while we're at it? I mean that more of a Mexican American thing anyway.

Anyway, that trailer looks cute. I'm hoping Pixar gets back to being consistently great.

Idea for a Cinco de Mayo movie: the main character (let's make him a Mexican-American who knows little of his own culture, and just uses it as an excuse to party) drinks too much and passes out, only to wake up in the past during the actual Battle of Puebla. Hilarity Ensues, but so does some Crowning Moment Of Awesome. Then he wakes up and wonders, Or Was It a Dream?
