I was actually wondering how Edogawa Ranpo would feel about all the gay stuff added to this adaption of his work, and then I found this on his Wikipedia page:

Although many of his first stories were primarily about sleuthing and the processes used in solving seemingly insolvable crimes, during the 1930s, he began to turn increasingly to stories that involved a combination of sensibilities often called "ero guro nansensu", from the three words "eroticism, grotesquerie, and the nonsensical". The presence of these sensibilities helped him sell his stories to the public, which was increasingly eager to read his work. One finds in these stories a frequent tendency to incorporate elements of what the Japanese at that time called "abnormal sexuality" (変態性欲 hentai seiyoku). For instance, a major portion of the plot of the novel The Demon of the Lonely Isle (孤島の鬼 Kotō no oni), serialized from January 1929 to February 1930 in the journal Morning Sun (朝日 Asahi), involves a homosexual doctor and his infatuation for another main character.

Another of his interests, especially during the late 1940s and 1950s, was bringing attention to the work of his dear friend Jun'ichi Iwata (1900–1945), an anthropologist who had spent many years researching the history of homosexuality in Japan. During the 1930s, Edogawa and Iwata had engaged in a light-hearted competition to see who could find the most books about erotic desire between men. Edogawa dedicated himself to finding books published in the West and Iwata dedicated himself to finding books having to do with Japan. Iwata died in 1945, with only part of his work published, so Edogawa worked to have the remaining work on queer historiography published.

So, uh, cross-dressing Kobayashi was a thing this episode. That apparently has some precedent from Edogawa's books.

I guess another thing Ranpo liked was "the erotic, the grotesque, and the nonsensical". This show is definitely indulging in a bit of that.

Tangentially related: this paper is pretty interesting stuff. It notably contains this anecdote:

The author Ono Kōji (1910- ) has written an account of going with Ranpo to a gay bar in Shinjuku, where Ranpo was a frequent customer. Ono states that there, Ranpo sat a young man in drag on his lap, and after a few minutes, the drag queen gave Ranpo’s forehead a kiss. With a comment about what a fun place that was, Ranpo suggested that they continue barhopping and try out another gay bar. Ono Kōji, Warera wa Ranpo tanteidan (Tokyo: Benseisha, 1995) 152-54. Likewise, the author Yamamura Masao (1931-1999) recalls Ranpo inviting him and the mystery writer Ishihara Shintarō (1932-) to a gay bar in the Ginza.

Wasn't really a mystery at all this episode. No clues. Still entertainingly bizarre

Show seems less on pushing the audience to solve the mystery than it being an avenue to show off the bizarre, crime and protagonists.

Kobayashi doesn't give a fuck.

Author sounds like a really fun guy.

Kobayashi looks MORE MASCULINE in a dress than he does in his school uniform honestly.

Is this a supernatural series? Cuz I have no idea what was going on with the shadow man. Dude has got mad skills. What a nice person.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

[up]I doubt it's supernatural, but there is a sense of surrealism.

Unrelated, the main character is twisted in his own way.

Hashiba, when hiding in closets, you should make sure the doors aren't glass

Erotic, grotesque, and nonsensical. Black Lizard is impressive

Looks like we might have something like a plot happening now

Hashiba, when hiding in closets, you should make sure the doors aren't glass

For some bizarre reason, before watching the episode I thought this referred to Hashiba actually hiding in a closet with a glass door. I don't know what I was thinking.

The Kobayashi badge joke was pretty good.

This show is really gleefully trashy, which makes it pretty enjoyable.

And yeah, it very much is ero guro nansensu.

Damn, Kagami. His sister...

The fat bastard got shanked by Sachiko's dad in a Twenty Faces mask.

A scenario that's by the numbers yet works.

I know, the only point I can see is to justify Twenty Faces's existence, and have a crappy system the 'true' enemy.

Not too happy about mentally ill so far be all cheating scumbags. Or implications of those faking it.

[up]Wow.

So I rented a book of some of Edogawa Ranpo's short stories from the library. They're pretty interesting. Nice light reading.

The actual "The Human Chair" story is pretty good, but the ending is a big ol' copout.

[up]I was relieved! That freaked me out! But it was all just an elaborate prank, haha...ha...

"The Cliff" and "The Hell of Mirrors" were kind of cool. There's got to be a real mirror sphere somewhere. I didn't like "the Caterpillar" though, that was just depressing.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

I guess I should start watching this again.

In other news, Wikipedia credits Edogawa Ranpo with inspiring shotacon:

Where the shotacon concept developed is hard to pinpoint, but some of its earliest roots are in reader responses to detective series written by Edogawa Rampo. In his works, a character named Yoshio Kobayashi of "Shōnentanteidan" (Junior Detective Group, similar to the Baker Street Irregulars of Sherlock Holmes) forms a deep dependency with adult protagonist Kogoro Akechi. Kobayashi, a beautiful teenager, constantly concerns himself with Kogoro's cases and well-being, and for a time moves in with the unmarried man. This nonsexual but intimate adult-boy relationship in part inspired the evolution of the shotacon community.

When will it end.

Some interesting concepts being played out.

So Akechi is also responsible for Twenty Faces, a perpetuating phenomenon.
