Ugh, I'm having trouble embedding the video.
I copy the code after the equal sign but it won't show up.
we're having some problems embedding videos right now, it's not just you.
Yeah, I seriously enjoy Mask of Phantasm so much it's definitely the best out of the four Batman DCAU Films.
How did everyone feel about Subzero?
I said before that I like the first three DCAU Batman movies. I haven't seen Mystery of the Batwoman yet.
My favorite is actually Return of the Joker.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Mask of the Phantasm would probably be PG-13 if the exact same script was done live action. There is rather gruesome implied deaths (the mob boss getting the large tombstone dropped on him), deliberately scary imagery (Sal Maroni dead with a Joker smile) and some intense violence (Batman was badly injured after the swat team accidentally set off the propane explosion, blood on his hands and everything). At the time of release, being animated gave them a huge buffer such that those elements were not considered as bad as in live action, by the time of Return of the Joker the public awareness of mature animation had increased to it getting PG-13 from the MMPA for the original cut.
Sub Zero is just okay, the story doesn't really justify the movie length and they end up banking on meaningless action scenes more than average. Robin's chase scene to rescue Barbara in particular, which is long, awkwardly animated (the DCAU has struggled with bad CGI blending the whole time) and doesn't really go anywhere. Besides that it's an alright Mr. Freeze story, even though it doesn't cover any new ground (wife is sick, he's trying to save her no matter what).
Haven't seen Mystery of the Batwoman, but I've heard that it's like watching a ballet after going to the rock concert that was ROTJ. It has it's own artistic value, certainly, but doesn't quite have the same visceral impact.
Of the DCAU movies I would consider Phantasm and ROTJ as tied. While Phantasm was a stronger story overall, ROTJ had a lean and refined style that makes it a very breezy watch. Phantasm had solid animation along the lines of a really good episode of the series (the Phantasm smoke was above average, though), while ROTJ was mesmerizing in how good it was.
The batwoman one wasn't bad, unfortunately it uses New adventures designs. There's supposed to be a new "truer" batwoman one coming out later on.
I think Under the Red hood and Dark Knight Returns part 2 are the best Batman animated movies. I never saw Return of the Joker and Mask of the Phantasm in full though.
It's worth mentioning that, for all the justified credit that gets heaped on Paul Dini for developing the character of Mr.Freeze, he essentially turned him into a one-trick pony. Heart of Ice was brilliant, but every successive use of Mr. Freeze made increasingly less sense, or was at least less meaningful. He really didn't work anymore as a continuing villain. This is not a bad thing at all, but I just think they probably shouldn't have tried to being him back.
Freeze really had only three appearances in BTAS, which made their own sensible and logical arc, one in TNBA that you could argue worked or not, and one in Batman Beyond. It's not like he ever was overexposed; even the Holiday Knights episode decided to skip a Freeze segment that was in the original comics version.
Hmm how do people feel about the Savage Time finale of JL's season 1? Idk I find it a bit underwhelming and boring at times, like the end with WW was sweet but Vandal didn't quite live up to the hype for me, plus the focus on the random WW 2 soldiers was offputting. Lantern losing his ring's power was kind of lame too.
Season 2 though so far has blown Season 1 out of the water(which still had it's moments). Braniac episode was an excellent opening, the 2nd Savage episodes were far better than the first, and Tabula Rasa is probably one of my favorite episodes yet. Even Doctor Mystery was surprisingly entertaining. I just finished the one with Despero which was probably my least favorite S2 so far(no surprise it's GL focused) but isn't nearly on the level of Gorilla Grodd's S1 stuff. The show definitely feels like it's grown the beard at this point.
Currently I'm at the one with the Justice Lords. About to watch part 2 right now.
Ooh, "A Better World"! That's a good one! Part 2 had Batman vs. Batman, right? That's a good scene.
It's Doctor Destiny, by the way, not Doctor Mystery. I'll agree he's pretty good, though.
"The Savage Time" is kind of boring, yeah. They doing much more interesting things with him in season 2.
Oh God! Natural light! His appearance in TNBA (Cold Comfort) was pretty terrible, but BB's "Meltdown" made up for it even if it didn't really do anything new with the character - mostly because it did the basic plot (Freeze's hopes are dashed and he is forced to go back to his old ways in his pain) in a way that presented the character in a far less senseless way.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Yeah doctor destiny, I actually never heard of him until I saw that episode. Seems pretty cool though.
A Better world was good, I was not expecting Lex Luthor to stick to his end of the bargain. In fact seems like every episode onwards has been great(except maybe the possession crystal one, it was a bit weak). While the secret society episodes had its share of Out-of-Character Moment, the battles themselves were fantastic and it was just really fun to watch. I just finished the Superman death episode and it really got me liking Savage now, not to mention it had Lobo. Season 2 seems to be using its villains better than season 1 did.
Next up is the Wild Card, which is supposed to be a fan favorite. Royal Flush gang FTW, though unfortunately my sister has taken the TV so it'll have to wait.
Vandal Savage is an interesting villain in principle, but also somewhat flawed in principle. A big part of his character is that, being truly immortal (unlike Ras Al Ghul), he has had years of experience and preparation to execute his plans. Given that modern comics cover a period of maybe 20-30 years tops (for example allowing time for Dick Grayson to go from being a teenage Robin to a 30-something Nightwing) that means Vandal can only execute plans 20-years in the making so many times. "Savage Time" somewhat justifies it by explaining it through Time Travel, that he recognizes WWII in hindsight as the most opportune time for him to take over the world.
That's a good point. Vandal almost never has plots that have really utilizes his immortality - with steps and webs he put in place decades or centuries ago. Despite having been there and shaped history, he's rarely adapted as having enough continuing global influence to really use that pull in the present. Rather, he's got a lot of short term plans that have been either thwarted throughout history or succeeded until the tides changed and he was force to abandon them and go to the next place.
Even his second plot in Justice League was pretty short term. The best we typically get is that he's been collecting funds for the past few centuries.
"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Yeah, Dr.Destiny showed up, believe it or not, in Neil Gaiman's first big Sandman arc. He was John Dee.
"...plus the focus on the random WW 2 soldiers was offputting." While I was rather indifferent to "The Savage Time," those weren't "random WW 2" soldiers, that was Sgt.Rock and the combat-happy joes of Easy Company from DC's old GI Combat comic (plus their own title; they ran right up until Crisis in '84 or so). The pilots in black with the bird motif who showed up later were the Blackhawks, and they even managed to work in a bit of the music from the Blackhawks' old radio show.
I think "Legends" is probably the best episode of Justice League Season 1.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!"Legends 1 & 2" is easily the best overall episodes of season 1. It's an accomplishment in writing more than anything else, the moment the Guild showed their true colors behind the golden age silliness is just fantastic. "Savage Time" works mostly for being balls to the wall insane (war wheels, Hitler on ice, Superman dogfighting bi-planes, etc), something that stuck with the rest of the series and can be seen in "A Better World" and "Wild Cards." In fact, the writers admitted that they purposely gave Wonder Woman some of the crazier ideas because it worked better with her. Ripping out the gun from a Thanagarian fighter and using it against the others would seem odd coming from Superman, J'onn or Green Lantern. Same with her throwing the Javelin at Brainiac's doomsday device in "Panic in the Sky."
Legends works as a very heartwarming Homage to the Golden and Silver Ages of comic books, given that they are very important in comic book history. Without them, we wouldn't have the Dark/Modern Age and, by extension, all the superhero movies (Burton/Schumacher Batman, Christopher Reeve Superman, Dark Knight Trilogy, Spider-Man Trilogy, X-Men, the MCU), Video Games (Batman: Arkham, Injustice), and shows (Arrow, The Flash, Adam West Batman, Young Justice, Brave and the Bold, 90s Spider-Man, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, The DCAU, 90s X-Men, Smallville).
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Legends was the one with the cheesy alternate universe league, right? That one was my favorite season 1 episode.
I finished season 2, and wow that finale was just...incredible. Hawkgirl is really good looking under that mask BTW. I wasn't expecting her toget backhanded by the hawk dude though. JL was really pushing those age ratings huh? Even Joker slapped Harley out cold in the royal flush episode which I don't even recall him doing in BTAS.
Watching Unlimited, there's a noticeable shift in episode dynamic and admittedly some of it feels fillerish but I can see that there's something bigger being led up to as it goes on. I really liked the return of AMAZO, guy is an utter BEAST and one of my favorite characters on the show. Kids Stuff was kind of offputting in concept as it seemed more fitting for Teen Titans(in fact Morbrat or whatever his name seems like a perfect fit as a villain on there) but the end was actually pretty cool and it had its moments. I'm not feeling some retcons though, like Amazo clearly destroys the tornado bot yet he's back next episode without explanation...and Grundy had a great send off last season so why is he back? That does kind of annoy me.
I'm at the episode where Aquaman and Hawkgirl are playing chess. I love how much of a "Stop Having Fun" Guy he's acting. Also, while I'm loving all the pure DC geeky fanservice Unlimited has, it definitely shows just how lame some of these heroes were. The Hawk and Dove episode was flat out boring due to how lousy those two are. Booster Gold was kind of amusing though. Not to mention, some of them look like absolute dorks lol.
Dude, Joker pushed Harley through a window in the Animated Series.
I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. And that's simply poking a poodle compared to what he did to Tim.
You need to finish Unlimited Season 1, and I'll tell you all the episodes that are part of an arc.

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Red Tornado is a wind elemental in an android body, his body can be destroyed and be repaired easily (He's sometimes considered the counterpart to Vision from Marvel). None of that is really explained in the series, but we can assume is intended to be canon.
mask of the phantasm itself is also an exceptionally strong movie. it is a legitimately mature film that doesn't talk down to its audience at all and manages to tell a compelling adult story while keeping everything PG. The animation is great and the soundtrack is also a masterpiece. imo it's the crowning achievement of the DCAU.
