It seems Luc Beeson's next film will be an adaptation of the Valerian comic series. It's reported Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne will be starring as Valerian and Laureline.

The official teaser trailer was released today.

I'm interested in it. I'm not really familiar with the source material. I know it influenced a lot of Sci-Fi movies and TV series.

I have some vague memories of this from when I was younger. I think the Swedish translation changed the names of the characters for some reason though.

Still a great "screw depression" song even after seven years.

Ok, Beatles. Odd choice. Not familiar with the source material, did a quick look on the tropes page. It's gained my curiosity though.

Seems interesting. The trailer's a little vague on plot, but it is the first one, and the comic synopsis sounds fascinating.

Read the thread title as Valerie and Her Week of Wonders for a sec and got excited. Oh well.

Anyways, don't know much about the plot but that CGI city looks gorgeous. Might have to check this one out some time.

It looks very nice. I picked up a good bit of worldbuilding just in that trailer.

Say what you will about Lucy's frankly bizarre plot, it looked incredible. Valerian is an actual pre-existing thing, so it'll look incredible, and hopefully that will reign in Luc Besson's weirder impulses.

Not Three Laws compliant.

[up]Luc Besson is friends with the creators of Valérian and Laureline which this movie is based on. The artist actually helped with the designs on the Fifth Element. That's where they met and even back then they were talking about doing an adaptation of Valérian and Laureline.

As a very, very late comment, yes for whatever reason, the Swedish translations calls them Valentin and Linda (and the series gets to be Linda och Valentin).

It doesn't have a thread of its own but I think it's safe to assume there's a fair number of fans among the people currently waiting for this: in anticipation of Valerian's impending release and its own 20th anniversary, The Fifth Element will be getting entirely renovated in 4K and given a new round of screenings in select US theaters, with an exclusive preview of Valerian included.

Saw it today with my boyfriend.

This movie... REALLY feels like its adapting something that's a lot longer than a movie could possibly be (I don't know how long the comic ran though) and, yet, this movie could easily have been 90 mins. Easily. There were a ton of plot points that got brought up almost to just as quickly get forgotten about or solved instantly.

I think what killed this movie for me were the leads. They had NO chemistry. At all. Which was confusing because the beginning plays it up like its a 'Will they or won't they?' thing with the girl calling Valerian out on having had A TON of past relationships with other women, but apparently the 'marriage' thing at the begginning wasn't a joke at all and its what the movie ends on? If they've been a couple for long enough that marriage is the film's ending, why the hell would Valerian's long list of past relationships be relevant?

Anyway, the leads took it way too seriously. They're deadpan and not emoting much and it just felt boring in a movie that otherwise could be rather campy and fun. I remember one scene where the girl gave a sarcastic line and... her delivery and tone wasn't any different than the other lines before and after. It felt like watching two Straight Guys with no one setting up the jokes. So I couldn't believe their romance when they didn't have any chemistry and their tones never changed so I couldn't fathom when we were supposed to be genuinely hurt by what one said to the other or when they're trying to do anything emotional.

I think what really grated me about Valerian was his voice. He's played by Dane De Haan and the actor is 31, but this character looked like he was 19 and spoke in his best 'I'm Batman' voice that just didn't match. So when he goes on some rant near the end about 'I'm just a soldier. I don't know anything but protocal' in his best gravely Batman voice, I couldn't take him seriously when the movie wants to treat it as a genuine moment. I don't know if maybe this is something discussed in the comics at some point, but it didn't translate if it did.

What could have been cut is a lot of this film. MOST if not all of the second act is irrelevant. I'll put it in spoilers though. Why were these aliens fishing with butterflies? Who knows? Its never mentioned again. Was there any significance to the fact that Loreli went past the time limit to get info from the squid about Valerian and it might have eaten a few memories? Nope! Why put Loreli in a wedding dress to carry food to their king? Who cares? Why does Valerian need to find a shape-shifting prostitute to avoid a diplomatic event if the aliens kind of already caused one by kidnapping a government agent in the first place? We'll never know! BTW, Blue shape-shifting Rihianna dies as soon as she's no longer needed and is also never mentioned again. I went to the bathroom before it happened, was confused, boyfriend filled me in, and did note that it was never relevant. And the Princess' soul landing in Valerian? Why is never explained besides 'she chose you' and all the relevance seems to be just to kick off the plot and that's it. It isn't explained until its plot relevance was 2 hours ago.

It also had an awful habbit ot complicating a situation, only for that complication to just as quickly be undone. The enemies enter into a room and start goo-ing up everyone? Valerian just happens to have a microdrone to stick in his mouth that will free him from the cocoon even though he barely has time to see what they're doing and just happens to have something useful that was never mentioned. Enemies escape into a part of the city that their big ship can't go? Good thing they have a smaller speedier rocket on board! The enemies massive ship splits into a hundred smallers ones that look exactly the same? Thank god the heroes can instantly figure out which one has their target! It just got boring because they happened to have the right tools they needed for any situation and never really stumbled except when the plot needed and didn't use much inginuity or creativity to solve their problems.

The second act feels like more of a waste because The beginning opens on Loreli calling Valerian out on his behavior and past relationships and almost outright tells him what he needs to prove to be a better person. At the end, Valerian almost refuses to give the aliens the Mac Guffins and says 'Protocal is all I've ever known', but this doesn't come up ever in the 2 hours and 30 min runtime until then. Nevermind that he disregarded protocal countless times earlier in the film. If the second act had to do something, it should have been confronting Valerian's negative character traits in relation to his romance with Loreli and his stickler-to-the-rules traits to build into the character moments of him finally winning Loreli's trust and affection and abandoning or at least changing his protoal ideals.

I'm not sure which book it is adapting I have "Valérian and the City of Shifting Waters."

They have 22 different books in that series. Based on the name it seems to be adapting the third book in the series title "The Empire of a Thousand Planets"

Saw it today. I found it to be generally enjoyable, but a lot of the characterization felt very 80's action movie for some reason. The scene in Paradise Alley felt waaaay out of place, overdone, and overlong. I don't know if Bubble is a character from the original comic (I'm guessing she is), but it seems like a lot of time could have been saved and very little lost storywise if she'd been cut and Valerian had just acquired some kind of black market disguise device instead.

There was little here that felt new or particularly original, which is too bad as I know that Valerian is foundational in modern science fiction space opera. It's always a bit of a problem revisiting the foundations when people have already become very familiar with the stuff built on those foundations. John Carter kinda had the same problem.

Yeah, like John Carter it's a novel thing that was so far back that everyone thinks it's copying everything.

Saw it. Loved it. It kinda sucks that there's next to no enthusiasm for it (at least in the US) because it deserves so much more attention and praise than it's getting.

That opening montage had me damn close to tears. I needed that shot of optimism. It helps that I'm a David Bowie fan who's still not quite over it.
