Opening.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe example list gives me this.◊
I can grab a screen shot of the uncensored bluray version. How is this? well after being combined together.
Aww the quality of the CN broadcast image is poor... It is from 2005 ><.

The quality is poor, but I can clearly see the difference in the gun so I'd be fine with that; not where I can look at the other suggestions right now.
C'mon... let's go with the obvious show here - G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: [1]◊
For some reason, laser rifles still spit out shells when set to full auto...

That's freaking hilarious. It has my vote.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. The current image is clear and concise. Not to mention a classic.
The current has my vote, too. It has that "painfully obvious edit" -thing going for it that makes it clear it's censorship and not just artistic licence, without having to show a before and after frame.
The pic is so bad quality that the 'painfully obvious edit' part fails to come across. Got a better quality version? It's worse than my CN image.
Also a before image could go a long way,

The image isn't about Bowdlerized weapons, but weapons presented as unrealistic and "unlethal".
Also here's the image at a larger side with the borders cleaned.

That's an improvement on the current for sure.
Definitely worth a quality upgrade in the meantime, but I think a crowner is in order.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.My problem with the current is that the object is so ridiculous that I didn't even know it qualified as this trope. It looks like something Inspector Gadget would use more than a gun...
10 definitely seems like a free improvement over Current, but I like the picture in 5 best. It's very clearly intended to be a regular gun as evidenced by the shell casings, yet has been edited to a laser rifle. In the current, outside from the weird hand position (which makes sense considering it used to hold a pistol), nothing indicates that Helmeppo was ever intended to use anything other than this spring-loaded showerhead
Agreed. Its strength is that if you squint, you can tell it used to be a gun, once upon a time. But it's so outlandish that it doesn't look like a Family-Friendly Firearm so much as a Dr. Seuss-style whoozit.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I'm voting 5 too, the shell casings are what sells it to me.
The fact that it's so outlandish is what makes it hilarious.
4Kids One Piece also has Marine soldiers sporting water guns, but the miraculous hammer spring device is just way funnier.
Hilarious != good illustration
Except it's hilarious and a good illustration.
I like 5 as well. It's clear what it's supposed to be while still not being that, compared to the current where it's just not clear what it's supposed to be in the first place. Nothing indicates it's a gun replacement. And it's not funny.
Check out my fanfiction! It's not really that funny either. The situation, that 4Kids thought this contraption was threatening and identifiable enough to replace a gun, is indeed absolutely, positively hilarious. Without that context though, and people who want to use the picture to understand what the trope is about, it's just a guy with a weird thing in his hand
I'd argue that the fact that such a contraption is meant to be taken seriously as a threat is hilarious.
He agrees. But the image doesn't say anything about "meant", and that's a lot of info for a caption.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Indeed. The caption is absolutely vital in the current image. As in without it, it's completely undecipherable.
"The caption is vital" is not a fatal criticism IMO. An image doesn't have to work without one.
It's definitely a weakness, though.
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.
Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:
The image on the page is low quality, and it's hard to see what it actually is he's supposed to be holding.
A few clearer suggestions:
Middle panel. Everything about the image says he should be holding a gun. He's a police, firing bullets, and he's doing it with a doughnut. The only thing is that the actual doughnut is a little small, but it's clearly not a gun.
Bugs Bunny's Birthday Ball. Yosemite Sam fires fireworks from his guns. It might be a little awkward to crop (or even edit away stuff around him if possible), but otherwise a clear image.
Fruit Bazooka.
The original Famicon Light Gun◊ can be compared with the American Zapper to show how censorship is used to get to the trope. Or potentially just the zapper, although that might not illustrate enough. (There are also plenty of images for both if those particular ones aren't good.)
In the examples there are tons of laser-like guns, and a few weird ones as well.
