Well, take into account that apparently all that marched and played instruments are meant to be the veterans that have years under their belt or were playing since middle or elementary school. The cheerleaders with the pom poms were the beginners who have just picked their instruments.

I don't know much about band, but it seems like most people in the club do know how to play their instrument or have been doing so for a long time now, problem is that they don't keep themselves sharp by fooling around a lot and since they don't play together when they come into an ensemble they are terrible since they have no harmony.

Hazuki episode this time. Pity she's my least favorite character

Looks like the main pairings will be Hazuki x Shuuichi and Kumiko x Reina

In which there are auditions for the first time in this school. I can see first and second years being overjoyed because this gives them more of an opportunity to get in.

I love how Gouto was able to articulate just why he enjoys the tuba — on its own, it doesn't seem much, but in an ensemble, you can see how it adds to a whole (see how Hazuki's practice notes don't actually resemble any song, but together with her friends we get "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star").

Also, oooh, audition subplot. That's surely to cause drama, especially with regards to Reina. If you go around some forums, you'll see some posters (who are either band members themselves, or have some music background) note that Reina's actually much better than trumpet-sempai, and if the former gets selected, the fangirls aren't going to be happy...

I.... thought we KNEW this would be one-cour. These days, all Kyo Ani shows are one-cour.

Correction: modern Kyo Ani shows follow a"1-cour-then wait for Movie or Sequel confirm" set-up.

Pacing feels single-cour to me. We've been moving pretty fast

Next episode will be Aoi this time. Well, it was a hinted in episode 6 that she suddenly cheered Kumiko without prior notice. We might discover sooner on why she is acting weird. Why she seems not enjoying being in the band? My theories are maybe she's having some difficulty in her cramming, or has a serious illness, or having a hard time with the third year senpais that theres a chance that she might QUIT the band.

I think she's just jealous. Remember, when she enrolled the club was basically slacking off and playing poorly. When she's in her second year the big falling-out happened (which was won by the slackers). It's only now (when she's a third-year already concerned with exams) that the club started doing what they're all about properly and seriously aiming for the top. Add that to the fact that she probably won't make the cut in the audition (no time to practice) and you have it.

I'm only on episode 3, but I suddenly realized that being part of an orchestra is literally exactly the same as raiding in World Of Warcraft.

That's an apt comparison. Everyone has their part to play and needs to be practiced in their role. If even one person is off the whole thing falls apart.

See Kumiko's comment on the required piece they're going to be playing for the competition, which is something that would only sound well if everyone plays in harmony; if they don't, it'd sound terrible.

And now, having caught up, the comparison feels even stronger. Keep up your rotation in a mobile encounter! Server-first guilds (not) poaching skilled players! Thankless and boring yet ultimately necessary roles like healing!

The only thing that doesn't slot in perfectly is Taki. No one ever mentors guilds.

Kyo Ani is just… so powerful.

And the writing continues to be deft. The ensemble cast (lol) is shaping up nicely.

Not the most ideal person for the job, but because she was the only one who actually went out and did something, it made her the best person for the job. I can respect that. Haruka is like a walking school girl incarnation of Teddy Roosevelt quotes.

Hazuki's going in for the kill. She's most likely going to get rejected, but I don't want the reason to be Shuuichi likes Kumiko. I like Kumiko and Shuuichi's friendship.

But really, I just want everyone on this show to be gay. Except Gotou and Riko, they're cute together.

Normally this'd be the set-up for Kumiko and Shuuichi realizing they have feelings for each other, but the show's done zero to suggest that they do. I'm actually kind of confused right now

Well, after all this club politics and stuff it's a bit hard to care about romance. I think the show realizes this though, so it's being relegated to a subplot with the primary joke character.

Honestly though, I don't really have a good feel for who this guy actually is, other than someone who's known Kumiko for a while and feels comfortable talking to her. They generally seem to talk about club politics and mostly he serves as exposition by explaining things from another perspective. I'm not invested in him at all.
