I agree with your cons, plus it seems more like Killer Rabbit than this trope. Here's some possibilities:
I think either 2.1 or 2.2 would work well. Not so high on the running animals.
Check out my fanfiction!I think the animals are really funny, especially the hippo (2.4).
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.I really like the hippo. It looks slow (as hippos look), and yet the man's reaction shows that it's still something you need to run from if it chases you
I like the hippo one as well. You can clearly see that the man is running very fast away from it, so we can see that it's fast.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Reminds me of this YT video of a couple hippos chasing a speedboat. They may be fat but those things are FAST!
How about some of the panels from this Gunnerkrigg Court? I know the robot doesn't look particularly slow, per se, but he's faster than he looks, and that's the trope, isn't it?
I'm not seeing the slowness and I'm not seeing the fastness (at least not without the full strip), so that's a on both counts for me
How am I supposed to infer that he is faster than he looks? He's small, and he's a robot, so I'd assume that he is meant to be really fast.

It's landed a strike on its opponent before she can finish saying "Go."
Yeah, but "being fast" is just half of the trope. He also needs to look slow to qualify, and he doesn't
Frankly, from a purely visual standpoint a big, bulky animal says "slow" a lot more than a relatively spindly, light-looking robot.
The other problem is that it looks less like he's moving really fast and more like he's just jumping the gun and attacking before the match actually starts.
Reaction Image RepositoryHe's a small, wiry looking robot; it's literally impossible to assume that he's slow.

Heh, that works.

"Hasbro had to severely tone down the violence when making "Hungry Hungry Hippos."
"C'mere, lit'l man! I'm going tae eatcha!" has never seemed more apropos.

"Real life version of Hungry Hungry Hippo is not very well received."
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.I approve . Image #16, not the Real life Hungry Hipos though, they would be scary.
Is everyone good with the hippo?
That's the only thing that's had any positive consensus, so I'm calling it; it's up and tagged. Undecided on any of the caption suggestions...crowner?
Go for the crowner. There are some very good options here.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."
