Orbital weapons as well. Drop a Tungsten rod on a Mage.

Some magic systems give mages an equivalent in "meteor[ite]" spells, of course.

There really isn't a winner or loser here. You can find magic and tech in fiction to be matched in any level of power and in counteracting each others advantages. This extends all the way to magically and technologically omnipotent entities, so there truly is no way one can be superior over the other.

This isn't to say that you can't match up specific people or societies, at least within the same Super Weight if you want to be fair. Of course, the actual answer then is both, you always use both, because Science Fantasy is the shit, and plasma spewing-bio-robot-dragons-in power armors that run on nuclear magical cores are fucking awesome.

[up] That does actually sound really cool.

What about a Wizard who changes their views on their magic when they study basic physics?

God of the gaps, if you don't understand nuclear physics, radioactive decay could easily look like magic.

Oh god. Give a wizard a education on nuclear physics and explosives and watch themselves become even more powerful!

Back in the old World of Darkness, mages with the Forces sphere could mess around with the fundamental forces. On the lower tiers of Forces you could play around with kinetic energy and mess with electromagnetism a bit. On high levels, you got to play with gravity. But on the top tier?

The weak and strong nuclear forces. Look them up and you'll know what that meant.

Reality is for those who lack imagination.

Yeah, imagine a wizard that figures out a spell that acts like a bunch of control rods. get a big lump of uranium, cast the spell on it, plant it, and get out before the spell wears off...

[up]Anders does something like that in Dragon Age 2, creates a magical tactical nuke.

Dragon Age is a verse that gives an example of this, to a degree: the Qunari black powder - they have mages, but they leash them and they are PURELY weapons of war. They augment it with basic blackpowder cannons and large partially mechanised warships. they've been locked in a cold war with a mageocracy for a century.

So the tech level is F15's, but it gives the Qunari equivalent fighting ability against mages who can use rituals to crack the very earth open.
