Yeah, seriously. They gave him a fireball attack, a spinning tornado move, and even a rising uppercut. I expected more from Sakurai. Making a third-party character just be a Mario clone is such a waste.

Well, this is his opinion on the Direct.

Read through that blog and... Everyone's entitled to their own opinions but so am I so fuck that guy.

To put a bit more behind that, he comes off as a massive dudebro. He calls the casual atmosphere of Nintendo Directs "feminine" and wants more masculinity in a Star Fox game. He also goes on to complain that Nintendo felt the need to specify that Xenoblade Chronicles X has an open world like a Western RPG for reasons I cannot understand. Then he moves on to complaining about how there are no western characters in Smash Bros, never mind the fact that Smash Bros is all about iconic characters and the only iconic western character I can think of is Master Chief who's owned by Microsoft. To top it all off, he complains about how a commercial felt like it was from the 80s because it featured a nuclear, Caucasian family when it's apparently more realistic to have a single mother with three kids of mixed race from three different fathers.

It's that final bit that really pisses me off. I hate hypocrisy more than just about anything else.

Basically, I theorized that he wants society, living, and people to be like the 1960's to 1980's, where people acted like their genders.

Also, while the Japanese-made Game Characters were popular, western made character shouldn't be completely left out(those by Midway, Interplay, Blizzard, Humongous Entertainment, Ubisoft, Valve Co, etc.)

Though, I do admit that Star Fox did have better music on the SNES.

Nintendo is a Japanese company, so of course most of the roster is going to be from Japanese companies. Especially since there's a lot of Western companies that, while they may have popular characters, do not get along with Nintendo or just have no connection at all.

He clearly didn't think about what likely goes into adding characters to Smash and is just complaining in an attempt to get people to pay attention to him again.

All we know is that Indie devs have a good relationship with the Big N. Bigger ones like Rockstar and Rocksteady do not.

[up][up]In their cases, I don't think they ever had a relationship with Nintendo. The market for their games usually isn't worth developing for Nintendo systems.

[up][up]Rockstar North used to be close to Nintendo during the SNES and N64 days when they were DMA Designs. Rockstar San Diego was also a close partner with Nintendo on the N64 when they were Angel Studios.

[down]My response wasn't really if it was possible though they did make games in which Nintendo owned the rights. It was more a response to them saying I doubt they ever had a relationship with Nintendo.

DMA Design made Uniracers which was co-developed by Nintendo of America.

Angel Studios made two Ken Grifey, Jr. games on the N64 sure they are licensed games but Nintendo was the publisher and owned the copyright on that series.

But do either of those companies or their parent company retain that relationship and see an immediate benefit to building a working relationship with Nintendo? Do they have recognizable characters, mascots or intellectual property that would excite the fans? Just look at the 3rd party DLC characters. Does any Western dev have someone near that level?

I doubt it. The companies that now have the Rockstar name have (quite rightly) gone their own way. Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Well, Master Chief is a legit and iconic choice for the FPS genre(as he hits the most basic of requirements, a 3rd party with a gaming history). Toning him down while still keeping his main weapon, the Assault Rifle(if made more cartoony and using laser bullets, could possibly work?), and all of Sakurai, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Bungie agreeing is quite a hurdle. It'd be cool, but it seems unlikely due to this.

Anyway, I can't wait for the next Smash direct. I hope it comes while I'm on vacation. Even if I can't decently play the game for the moment. Major dental surgery and all.

Master Chief is owned by Bungie which is owned by Microsoft. He's basically the only iconic western video game character and there's no way he's getting in.

"The only iconic western vídeo game character"

What about Kratos? And Gordon Freeman? And Glados? And Lara Croft? Or, heck, even Doomguy?

Zelenal, you'd be correct in saying Japan hás more iconic vídeo game character. But saying the West only hás one is just plain innacurate.

Who owns them isn't really relevant whatsoever. What matters is whether they'd be okay with having the character in and can make the fit. No more, no less. You're putting stock into something that doesn't exist. Sakurai doesn't care if they're western or eastern. Does he have a gaming history? Yes. Would people buy him? Yes. Would all the companies work together to put him in? Maybe. Can he be made to fit? Maybe. Those are his only actual real obstacles. Oh, and maybe some didn't know that his old criteria for 3rd parties was translated properly. They do not need to be on a Nintendo system to be eligible. It's "a courtesy", as in it'd be nice, but isn't really important whatsoever.

And I feel that the issue is toning him down won't work for all the companies(which is understandable). That's about it. Just like it doesn't work having Mortal Kombat characters without the extreme violence/blood/gore. Especially the extreme violence(MK vs DC Universe went bad cause of this, but they had enough violence for it to not completely bomb. Even the TV show had enough violence, even if clearly toned down, to still keep the basic point of the series, being a fighting genre and all)

[up] This too. There's a ton of choosable icons. Making them fit is the hardest part(not so much getting permission to use them, but you have to make them fit while pleasing the company in question).

I don't understand how Master Chief being owned by a rival company isn't relevant. It'd be like Sonic appearing in Smash Bros for the N64 or Nintendo letting Mario appear in Play Station All-Stars Battle Royal. It's just not happening.

[up][up] Laura, I'll grant you. Kratos, maybe. However, when I say "iconic" I'm meaning "easily recognizable worldwide by at least gamers." While I think Master Chief may have reached that level (and even that's a bit iffy), I'm not so certain anyone else has. Certainly not Doomguy. None of those guys are on the same level as Mario, Sonic, Pacman, or even Cloud and Ryu.

What does Bungie have to do with Halo? They don't work on that series anymore.

Looking at just consoles/handhelds, I'd say the iconic western characters at least on par with Mega Man are Master Chief, Lara Croft, Minecraft Steve, Rayman, Kratos, and Spyro. I'm probably missing a few and obviously there's some subjectivity with many characters.
