New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

Has anyone else seen that the post-typing box has gone from too small to way too big? I can drag the little diagonal lines in the lower-right corner to expand it, but not to shrink it below this size. It's not a bad idea to start with a bigger box, but it's a little annoying on my laptop because the screen is wide but not that tall, so now I have to scroll down to reach the Send button.

Should search results open in new tabs?

[up] No - changing that right now.

[up][up] We are playing with the size. It should be better shortly.

I just thought I'd drop in and ping y'all about the "update/version history" suggestion that has been made by a few Tropers.

Relevant anecdote: Google search has been a little sketchy for me since long before the update, but the update completely borked it—searching literally never worked, so I just stopped trying.

It's now fixed, apparently as of today, but it was complete luck that I even noticed drewski tell another troper in the bug thread that searching was fixed. If I hadn't noticed that post, I would have just gone on assuming Google search was useless and broken.

Some kind of update/version history would go a long way towards keeping tropers informed about changes that are being made and fixes that are being implemented, especially for huge ones like "Google search not working at all, ever".

The Sugar Wiki pages have white text for headers, which is difficult to read. This page being an example.

Came for the tropes, stayed for the cleanup.

[up] Ooh, that is a little painful with those teal highlights.

Edit: And I just realized you're talking about the headers down below with light grey background, which is even worse and nearly impossible to read.

I like that color, but it is indeed hard on the eyes :/

We will get those changed out. Still have some work to do with styling the Sugar and Darth Wikis, as well as all the other pages that lost their color.

Did you change the font? I find it a little hard to read in both page histories and the text box. (using chrome on a pc)

Nope. But I agree, the test is a little hard to read - we will get that changed.

My computer recently did an update thing. That may be what changed things. It also appears to have changed the way fonts work in google search, because now those look messed up, too.

The site is navigating very slowly on my computer. I don't know if it's the site itself or Flash being wonky.

[up] Any particular pages? Do you think the ads were causing it?

Same with mine. I keep having to shut it down.

We aren't having these issues, so the more details you can provide the more likely we will be able to fix the problem.

Where's the search box to check another troper's edit history now?

Would it be better to have the pagination in descending order in Forums? So you can see the latest posts first?

In any thread that I open, the default page which opens in page 1, which has the oldest posts, not the latest posts

Ah yes. The thread starts with the first page to discourage pointless Thread Hopping.

Is the source function deliberately removed, or was it taken by mistake?

I wonder if it's worth to switch out the "watch" against the "discussion" button in the bars. Mainly 'cause watch is an editing tool like all the others, and "discussion" is also for reader's interest.
