New Design and Code Update - January 8, 2015

Go To

Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.

Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.

If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.

Now get back to Troping!

I don't know whether this is an issue specifically with the new design, but on Lost and Found the Reply buttons are almost equidistant between the two threads they separate. I ended up replying to the wrong thread because I thought I was clicking the Reply button for my post when I was actually clicking that of the thread above it.

Is it just me or I can't edit any page?

Like, I can't find the button to click.

There is a dropdown button below the logo with a pencil icon, next to the "watch" button.

I was actually talking about that very button.

I tried it on my phone and it worked, so I guess it's just this site not working up properly in my university computer.

Can there be the option of changing colours in the new layout? All bright white and blue can be a bit startling. I can change other things to white on black, to make it easier to read, but, I'm sure it wouldn't be too much to allow customisation. If it is possible, then where is it? And shouldn't there be more guidance towards it? it's not in my profile.

[up][up]Is the button not showing up on your computer, or is it just not opening the menu?

Is Java Script enabled on your computer?

The missing edit button is a javascript related issue. The button works, it's just invisible. Click in the little area of blank space next to the "Watch" button.

The "Create new" button for work pages doesn't do anything. Try it: Pay Day

That's because that button doesn't work that way. The "Create New" button is for creating a new subpage on a page that already exists. If you're creating a brand new work page like that, you just pull it up and then edit the page.

[up][up] Is that because the page doesn't exist yet?

Seems obvious that it's because the page doesn't even exist.

In that case, you want to click on the edit button.

When I click on the "Edit Page" button in the drop-down menu, it takes me back to Home Page. And another thing: I'm not too crazy about this new layout, and I haven't been visiting TV Tropes a lot since the new layout was released.

Sometimes I don't realize there is already an article and end up making a duplicate of it.

We are testing some new mobile optimized layouts and a couple of different design elements on the Beta site if anyone would like to head over there and provide their feedback.

Are there any plans for getting that little x in the search bar that erases everything typed into it because it kind of gets difficult to erase things from the search bar when using an Ipad

I think the crowner is kinda borked; whenever I vote, it shuffles the top few items. :/ You wind up with something with a low score overtop something with a higher score.

Aye, noticed that as well. Maybe it has too many options?

Also, a note regarding pages: If you are trying to edit a non-existent page and it reloads the page instead of offering the edit page, it may be that the page is locked. The new system does not display a page lock on non-existent pages.

On the sidebar, could we have it so only one category can be opened at a time? So if I opened Troperville, then, with it still open, clicked on Toys, Troperville would automatically be collapsed and Toys opened?

Re: a bug I just reported in the bug thread, I know this has been requested before, but it would really help me out if the edit/source/history/etc. links were just on the page somewhere instead of concealed in a js-dependent dropdown menu.

Previously, the aforementioned menu has been invisible to me due to javascript issues, but it worked if I clicked where it was supposed to be. But as of today it just doesn't work at all. I can still edit and view source by adding ?action=whatever, but now I think it's impossible for me to look at page histories. This would be a non-issue if the links weren't in a dropdown.

[up]I can't look at history pages either, but for a different reason. The blue gradient back ground makes the page unreadable unless each slot is highlighted individually.

Again, this is all Javascript related. We're working to revamp some of this stuff on the beta site, but these issues only occur for users who have scripting restricted in some way.

[up] I did explicitly say that. And I don't see how "This only occurs for a specific subset of users" renders it a non-issue. I understand that it's being worked on and will hopefully be addressed at some point in the future. But in the meantime, significant functions of the site are totally off-limits for me and other users in the same situation. I'm just suggesting a simple change that would render it actually a non-issue.

[up][up] Yes, I have had that problem since the redesign as well. Can't really experience that problem now that history pages are off-limits, but I have no doubt that it's still an issue, since I was looking at one just yesterday.

EDIT: Anyway, false alarm. The menu is working properly for me now (the button is still invisible, but I'm not worried about that); I'm guessing the page I was on simply failed to load properly.
