Tropers - The first of many exciting updates to TV Tropes is upon us! In this update, we focused primarily on making the header and side navigation bars consistent throughout the site. We also reworked a ton of the backend code to allow for easier and more rapid development as we move forward.
Some of you may love the new design, others may hate it. Either way, we would love to hear from you below. We are listening, I promise.
If you have a bug to report, please use the designated thread on the Tech Wishlist and Bug Report to let us know about it.
Now get back to Troping!

When it happened, I couldn't log in.
Not all of us are beta testers, though.
And then there was silenceI'm pretty okay with the new layout, except for the actual forum pages - they were a bit more gray than I would have liked, in terms of the actual elements and such. Besides that, though, I think it's pretty neat. Also, would there be a way to toggle minimizing or collapsing the bar on the left if you wanted?
(I couldn't log in either but that's kinda to be expected when there's a new major change like this)
UN JOUR JE SERAI DE RETOUR PRÈS DE TOII was able to log back in, post something on the pony thread, and then instantly got logged off afterwards so I couldn't edit it.
For a second, I thought that the school finally found out what I was doing on my laptop all day.
Yeah I got lagged and logged out too. Guess they'll have to do some more work.
Also my first reaction was "They Changed It, Now It Sucks!", but I'll probably get used to it.

You can get used to anything. I'm currently getting used to having no feeling in two of my fingers.
Doesn't mean I should have to.
And just because people are used to an old layout that is inconsistent doesn't mean we shouldn't get an overhaul.
Maybe not, but the overhaul shouldn't have an ugly unfamiliar color scheme either.
If that had been the wiki's scheme all along, I'd bet almost anything that you wouldn't even notice it by now.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Many people in the Beta didn't find the overhaul "ugly".
Also, it's just an appearance overhaul. One gets used to it after a short while.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDoes anyone know when the coding will be fixed?
>If that had been the wiki's scheme all along, I'd bet almost anything that you wouldn't even notice it by now.
Except it wasn't. And I do notice.
>Many people in the Beta didn't find the overhaul "ugly".
Beta testers not bringing up potential issues before launch? What a shock!
>Also, it's just an appearance overhaul. One gets used to it after a short while.
This has already been addressed. I don't want to settle for an inferior product. I want it the way I liked it, and there is no good reason for it to be any way other than the way it was.
Alright, now you're just wining. From what I get, you don't want to get used to the new layout, but I don't know what you mean about the beta-testers. You should be as flexible as the tropes on this site.
>Alright, now you're just wining
It's spelled "winning." And god that's an old meme.
> From what I get, you don't want to get used to the new layout, but I don't know what you mean about the beta-testers.
If beta testers were involved, one of them should have brought up rule 1 of changing your website, which is keep the colors the freaking same. Besides, looking in the other thread, it seems it was actually brought up and subsequently ignored. For what it's worth, I've yet to see a single compliment on the color change, just people expressing their distaste, or that they'll "get used to it." Protip: If a change isn't positive, it shouldn't be made.
>You should be as flexible as the tropes on this site.
What does that even mean?
"there is no good reason for it to be any way other than the way it was."
Look at how inconsistent the navigation is across different areas of the site, tell me there's no good reason for a redesign.
I would like to throw my 2 cents in on the whole "no comments from the Beta testers" thing:
In my time of Beta testing shit (like the Neverwinter MMO and Gears of War 3 for example) there's 2 things that happens very often.
-Beta Testers give no criticisms and just beta the thing to use it earlier than other people.
-Beta Testers that DO give criticisms are ignored by the people working on development.

That has absolutely nothing to do with color scheme. If you're going to respond to something I say, could you keep on the same topic?
"BETA - Design and Layout" on the dev server has 103 posts since it was started on 2 Jan as of this post, btw.
We are still playing with the color scheme - so sit tight.
x6 I meant whining, actually (oops). Also, are complaining about people not complaining? Isn't that a good thing that people are not complaining. And my last sentence alluded to Tropes Are Flixible (though I should have potholed it).
If people think that they can get used to it, then let them get used to it. Just try it out before actually whining about it.

The current palette is blue and white. The new design is still blue and white. It's not that big a change.
I would definitely lower the saturation on the top and bottom bars though.

Rhymes with "Protracted."Is there somewhere to see the new color scheme, as someone who missed the little window where it was up?
I'd like to toss in my two cents on the color.
Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.Here.

I'd assume that the lag/signin issues are probably why it switched back to the original version.
As for the blue, I don't mind it (I've been on the beta page for the past 2 weeks, so I had time to get used to the format), though I wouldn't mind it being lightened up a bit. Like make the bar the same color that the buttons at the top of site currently are.
